Really fun game overall, gives you a chance to see the Mob back in it's old days with a great story with the main character and the events of the time that effected him and the world around him, thus making the mod more powerful. Kinda a sad ending with the oldman but I found the whole game enjoyable.... except for the mindless 30's music. That stuff I had to mute the whole game. Just couldn't stand it.

This is a very good game.Graphics are not that bad but could have been better in my opinion. The car handiling is great. It really feels like an old car.The loading time is kind of long but it could have been worse. The game is great for a shooting game also.To explain this game I would say it is a gta game set in the 1930s.This is a very good game.
Differences between the PC version

I recommend the PC version over the PS2 version. When going from one section of the city to another the game interrupts for over thirty seconds to load the other portion of the city. This definetly kills the mood when one is traveling at high speeds to evade the cops or enemy only to find a car directly in front of you once the game continues. Also, the graphics are poor and I noticed that there is no diversity in the background people. There are no women on the streets and and only men. Overall, the PC version is better.
Whoever made this game should get wacked by the real mafia

I bought this game because I love shooter games and am fascinated by the early 1930's mafia. Thus I should have enjoyed this game thouroughly but I was very dissapointed. I would give both the pros and the cons for this game but I only found cons in the gameplay. First off, the load times are like an hour long. I was able to take a dump during one of them and came back with plent of time to spare. The long load times arnt just before the levels, there are usually several loadings within each mission. you cross a bridge, it has to load, leave or enter a building, it has to load. Half the time that I played the game was spent in front of a load screen. They could have at least put some historical mafia facts for us to read on the load screens to pass time. Secondly, once the level is loaded, trust me, the gameplay is not worth your wait. The levels are incredibly pointless and hard. You spend hours driving around town in a slow 1930's car to and from where the actual mission is. When you get to your mission its even more frustrating. You basically have to make it through the level hardley getting shot at at all. I think the enemys get more health than you because it takes about 5 shots to the head to kill them but it only takes a couple to kill you. The storyline to this game was totally predictable and mushy, not at all what youd expect from a game about the mafia. The main character fell in love, had a kid, and constantly talked about his new family and moral issues with his fellow mafia cronies. There are many other problems with the game but I dont have time to go into them. The only thing you really need to know is that buying this game will be the biggest waste of money and will send the message to game developers that its OK to make crappy games. Dont even rent this game either.
What can you do while you wait for the game to load? Make a sandwich!

My buddy and I were bored as hell one night, and I had let him borrow this game and we both agreed the load times kill this game. We wanted to see if we could make a sandwich in the time it took to load a level. I finished one and got almost halfway through making another one when the game started up again. The story however is pretty good, well a lot better than what I had expected. Driving sucks!!! The manufacturers were probably trying to make it a little more realistic than the successful GTA games, however it just got really annoying when you get pulled over for speeding. Some levels get pretty hard, especially the ones where you have to chase someone in a car. Combat also had it's minor flaws. I would buy a cheap used copy of this and play it for its storyline and decent gameplay.
Could have been much, much better.

Even though Mafia is an all right game and even though I find myself playing it every night, I find that it could have been better in many ways.
For example, let's start with free ride, all you do is run around, do taxi runs or kill people to get money to fix your car or get health at the hospital, but that's about it! I mean wouldn't it have been better if you could at least go inside some buildings to do stuff, i.e.: the Sallieri Bar to get a random mission from the Don or Yellow Pete's to buy some weapons or ammo instead of taking them from dead gangsters who don't do anything but walk around until you shoot them! Even being able to go inside the hospital to see some realistic ways of getting medicine or getting healed instead of a box out front of the hospital for a thousand (literally, but it doesn't take much to get a thousand dollars) dollars to get healed. Still on free ride, there could have been police as well as gangsters but you can easily see what all the programmers did was replace the police on the main game with gangsters in free ride except the gangsters don't run you down for speeding, etc. etc. Alright off free ride, lets go to the main game, missions.
Loading!!! Way too much loading!!! The game loads forever after every mission (alright that's fine) but not after crossing the bridge from Central Island to Newark/Downtown, and even then the loading takes sometime with an occasinal please wait screen after that! There is even more loading if you have to go inside a building during a mission and more when you leave such as the one with the Corleone Hotel. I sometimes find myself looking at the loading/please wait screen more then playing the actual game. Alright, point taken, way too much loading.
Police in the main game only run you down when you fire a weapon or speed but not if your allies or enemy's speed or fire a weapon, I wonder why? Very hard if someone is chasing you such as one of Morello's gangsters while the police are near.
Civilian A.I-horrible. They drive extremely slow always getting on my nerves which is one of the major down points of the game, I always see myself driving in the wrong lane, cutting corners to get around them, otherwise I wouldn't even be done with the game which I bought about two years ago! Also, they always seem as though they have nothing to do, you never see a civilian running or walking quickly, going inside a building, every single one of them walk extremely slow similar to their driving as I said before, as they have nothing better to do, no where to go or to be on time! Lastly, they are extremely stupid, aside from the part about their slow driving and walking, if you hijack a car, you pull them out of the car and all they do is sit their and cry, saying, "Please spare me I have a wife and kids, don't do it!" Rarely do you see them fight/shoot back at you.
The plot of the game is kind of poor. The main character, you, does too much for one man, one Mafioso. You almost never have help on your missions, and simply put, you do too much. For example, when Sallieri wants all of Morello's Generals knocked off, you take out all three, mostly all by your self, its unreal! The level 'Happy B-day' you find a way to get onto the steamboat, you find the General, you kill him, you cover your self, and Paulie drives you away to safety. The level 'Election Day', you have to go through an entire abandoned prison killing everybody all by yourself and on top of that, sniping the Counselor from a distance. And last but not least, the level where you kill Morello's last General and right hand man mostly by yourself. Paulie helps you kinda for the first and third time you fail but when the job is given to other people because you failed to kill him so many times, they fail themselves and you chase him all the way to the port alone, take out the entire port security alone, take out Morello's personal guards alone and Morello himself alone, very unrealistic.
Minor details-your piece, your gun. Every mission should start with a gun in your pocket, a revolver in the early missions and an upgraded Colt19-11 later on in the missions. I mean your allies have a piece on them in the beginning of the missions, but not you untill you get one from Vincenzo (on most missions). Choosing weapons- you should be able to choose weapons similar to your allies. I was so looking forward to get a Thompson on 'Creme da' la' Creme' like Paulie and Sam, but no, I'm special, I get a crappy sawed-off. Also, maybe some realistic ranking in Don Salieri's mob. The Don mentions something about how he wants Morello's generals knocked off and I believe there are three of them, so why dosen't Salieri have generals and if he does, who are they, how can we tell? Possibly Paulie and Sam are generals but I am unsure if I become a general myself and if they (we)are generals then maybe there could have been a slight detail to show such as a different hat or something on the hat or something, anything. Even though they are minor details, they, along with the large ones would have given the game 5+ stars.
Alright, I think that covers everything. But despite of all these downplays of the game, I don't see why I play it each night. Overall, I liked it, it is a good, fun game to play at night when I am trying to get tired but like I said, it could have been much, much better.

There is a new game coming out for PS2,XB & PC called The GodFather and Mafia will probably be its first match as they are both set in older times much before street gangs came in and grafitied, hit with baseball bats, wore greasy clothing, rode low riders and listened to "Fowl-Mouthed" Rap,no the times when groups of men drived posh cars, dressed in dark suits, listened to opera, wore shades, used a shotgun in black and white movies(who do you think is best the old 30`s 40`s poncy Mafia men or todays common street Gang"Sta"s?) by the way this is not a review i`m just talking about Mafia vs. The GodFather and i know this will happen but it will be also compared to those cartoony GTA series i hate those games now infact i don`t play crime/bad driving games no more(games like GTA,Driver,Getaway ect.) i am now a stealth-game junky(James Bond 007,Metal Gear Solid,Splinter Cell & Mission:Impossible game series) so i don`t use this genre anymore

Other than all the driving and loading, this game is awesome!I recommend it to all GTA fans. The AI is smart so this game is not just some stupid "beat in a week" game. The graphics are amazing too!Anyone who takes the time to beat it will be satisfied in the end.

I liked this game. Yes, graphics were outdated, but I think that actually added to the quality of the game since it takes place in the 1930s. The realism of driving was a turn off at first due to slower moving vehicles, but you eventually get faster cars as you move up through the ranks of the mob. The load times are the worst I can remember in a game, especially when crossing a bridge. It also would've been nice if they didn't block all the roads that lead to the hospital so you could heal yourself. The worst thing you could do is have the game autosave and go into the next mission with less than adequate health.
Still, with these few gripes, I would give it 4 stars. I rarely give a game 5 stars without a "save anywhere" feature. Apparently, developers of video games don't seem to think that it's important enough to include this anymore. I actually liked the character development and cared about keeping him alive. The controls are easy and the AI level is perfect. I've played it twice and would highly recommend it.
I'd also recommend never buying "No One Lives Forever". They should put that flawed game on Fear Factor and make contestants try to play it for 15 minutes. I guarantee you no one could do it.
