Not bad....but not all that great either.

When I heard about this game last year, I couldn't wait to become part of the mafioso family. Once again, I find the game can't meet the hype. My biggest problem is the sluggish controls of this game. Granted, the driving controls are sluggish for a reason; you're driving cars from the 1930's. Obviously, these cars will handle poorly. Unfortunatly, the controls while running and shooting are just as sluggish. The makers of this game really could have taken a few lessons from the controls of Grand Theft Auto, which are much smoother than Mafia's controls. Back on the subject of driving, there is WAY TOO MUCH driving in this game. While this works great with games like GTA and True Crime, the driving in this game gets just plain boring. Lastly, I was originally told that this game would have online gameplay. Apparently, my informant was confused because there is no online play. This is really a shame since it would have been great to have mob wars against other Dons. Now don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad game. It has an interesting story and decent graphics. Its just that you might want to give it a rent first and then decide if you want to become "one of the family."

I hated the first few missions of the game and almost quit early. As you play, and learn the controls better, the game draws you in. That comes from the excellent story line. The cut scenes are entertaing, and you feel like you are watching a good movie. Still the games lacks in a lot of ways. The controls are real stiff, and there is just to much driving. The cars are all 1930's and you find your self pushing down hard to get the car to move faster. All in all if you like the genere you will get some fun out of it, but I thought they could have done a better job.

I read these bad reviews and decided to rent this game first and make my own decision, which I think you should do to. That turned out to work in my favor, because I LOVED it! This is one of the best 1st person shoot-em-up games I've ever played! I own GTA3 and Vice City, and I love those games to the edge of infinity, but this game gives you something that even those don't; an authentic depiction of mob life in the 1930's! I had been waiting for years for somebody to release a game like this, where you get to stroll around as a 30's mobster and sic your loyal strong-arm goons on people. This is IT! First of all, some corrections to the game flaws mentioned by previous reviewers. Some have said that the cars don't handle well. I couldn't disagree more. These reviewers are obviously too used to the turn-on-a-dime handling of Vice City's cars, which is unrealistic. Besides some of the bulkier 4-doors and sedans that you have to choose from, most of these cars are VERY fast, responsive, and actually quite fun to drive! If you want a good small and agile ride, I'd recommend the Bolt Coupe (2-seater) and the Bolt Touring (my personal fave car, tiny but seats four comfortably, for your cronies). You only need to advance two or so missions to start collecting these, it isn't that hard! You can steal any car on the street that you like and bring it to Ralph's garage, it's all a matter of preference. Secondly, some previous reviewer suggested that there were no other methods of transportation besides a bulky car to drive over the wide expanse of territory in this game. Said reviewer must have either not been looking hard enough, or he must have given up on the game too soon, because he is completely and utterly wrong. In mission mode, you can conveniently get around the city with automobiles OR an active circuit of trains AND cable cars! Get to any train platform (or trolly-route sidewalk as the case may be) and wait for the car to pull in. When it stops, use X to board and enjoy a fast and fun trip to multiple points throughout town. For some reason, the trains and cable cars don't seem to be present in Free Ride Mode, but I'm not far in the game, and perhaps you have to unlock them in the missions somehow, just like with the cars?) It is a chore getting your goons with you on a trolly car, but it's worth it! Some people have said that the controls are impossible to master. I would tend to agree that they are difficult, but that's because this game was originally released on PC, and they never really re-formatted the controls to suit the PS2. In other words, this is NOT GTA!!! But they are certainly not impossible, and after adjusting to them, you'll find you get quite good with them. I think the haters who have reviewed here just gave up on Mafia too soon. You learn new things about getting around in the city and how to get ahead every time you play it, it's like an unfolding mystery! I'm not saying you should go right out and buy it, but please do yourself a favor and rent it first. You owe it to yourself AND your PS2 library to look into this game further!

I have to agree with the negative reviews. I rented it. Another horrble attempt at recreating GTA. Slow as hell, WAY too many loads, altogether boring. Too bad.

Not As good as Grand Theft Auto but Still Fun

This game is ok. The running in the game sucks, and the loading times often take way to long. The game is fun the fact that you shoot and hit people in the heads with baseball bats. The missions are pretty good and clever and the backround details are to die for. Overall this is a good game and give it a chance. I wouldn't go out and pay $50.00 for it but i'll rent it at least.

I would like to start off by saying the game is nothing compared to a great game like vice city. One thing that drove me nut was amount of load scenes and how long they took. I also hate the unrealistic background. None of the buildings were interactive. I also did not like the fact that you could not go out of the city limits. A good point is the great missions, even though some can be a bit tricky. I would rate this game worthy to rent but I woulnt advise you to buy it...

Um........it is good, but is more bad

When I heard about Mafia, I went right to a store and reserved it. I am a real fan of the GTA series, but this game is really 2 and a half stars. This game is too realistic, I mean you get tickets if you speed, I play games to get out of the reality of the world, and when I put the game in, I wasn't out. I play games to speed in cars and these 30's cars are too (...) slow. their guns are slow and weak. You have to shoot the bad guys like 10 times for them to die. it is a very slow story, if they put this more unrealistic, this game would be very great, it is hard. If you are looking for a game to escape reality and speed cars without paying the cops.......look somewhere else.

Mafia was a good game. Although I never played the PC version I was instanly hooked on it the first day I rented it. Later when I bought it I unlocked everything. It is fun to play over and over. If you buy this game you may fall in love with it!

Grand Theft Auto on tranquilizers

This title showed great promise which unfortunately was not realized. It's basically a rehash of Grand Theft Auto 3 or Vice City only with slow cars and bad music. Some of the control changes like the way you control your character on foot are unnecessary and kind of jarring. The makers took great pains to recreate the look and feel of the time period but it resulted in top heavy and SLOW cars. There are some really annoying dead ends to get your car stuck in if you take the wrong turn with the cops on your tail. I can kind of see what they were going for but for anyone who has played the GTA series its more hokey than charming. The Character models in the cut scenes are extremely well done though. Oh and the load times are horrific. I think I'll pull out the old Godfather DVD set rather than play this cumbersome game.

This game was extremely boring at the beginning. All you do is drive and the steering takes a while to get used to. Also the loading time is ridiculously slow and will annoy the crap out of you. After a while though you get to start killing people and be a real ganster and it starts to get fun. If you have the patience to get through the beginning it becomes worth it.
