Today is Monday, Feb. 16th 2004. I bought Mafia for PC in the fall of 2002 and it is one of my favorite computer games. The story, graphics, music, cars, and voice acting are all great. I have an ok PC so load times are bearable and I can run it with a decent amount of detail. The controls are great for the standard wsad keyboard and mouse setup. I did change a few controls for driving, though. I,ve played it through several times and when you beat the regular game, you unlock the "free ride extreme" mode. I don't want to give too much away to those that haven't played, but Tommy(the main Character) gets a house in the burbs where he can park/save bonus cars earned by performing crazy tasks throughout the city. A friend of mine has a PS2 and is thinking about getting Mafia. To those of you who rag on it or compare it to GTA/True Crimes, I say:1. This is not the same, and 2. How do you expect a state of the art game ported to an antequated system like the PS2 to behave. If the controls are hard, buy a cheap, decent computer! Using a mouse to aim is a truely fantastic thing. Anyway, if you are thinking about this game for PS2(or probably Xbox) rent it first. If you are patient enough for the load times and the learning curve using a controller, go ahead and buy it. If you have decent PC, why aren't you already on your way to the store! The Des Moines metro area has more than 250,000 people, so in a area of similar or larger size, CompUSA or Best Buy sell the PC version for about $30. Walmart it beating the price right now on the console versions by a few pennies, and they are everywhere! Or you can shop on line here, there or elsewhere. Buying things online is a pretty cool thing. Well, gotta go. Happy gaming!

What a big let down

I heard so many great comments from the PC version of this game, and, to be honest, Mafia is probably a great game on the PC...but the PS2 version is something else, believe me...Basically, you are a taxi driver who is accidently hired by mafiosos to get them out of a difficult situation. Progressively, you'll keep doing missions for these guys, and they become more and more difficult.

Personally, even if a game has a weak storyline, I don't really care...as long as it's fun, has good graphics, okay controls and atmosphere, it has potential to be an excellent game. If you want a jaw-dropping scenario, go rent a well-written movie instead of a game...

Anyways, Mafia has an okay scenario I guess (very classic and conventional), but it has a whole lot of awful weaknesses. First, the graphics....the funniest thing is that the game is full of cutscenes which are absolutely great-looking and detailed. But when it comes to the game, the quality drop is spectacular. City detail is absent, giving an atrocious atmosphere to the game, as well as the fog, which unables you to see five meters in front of you. The character models are worse than GTA's pedestrians, the car models are okay, lighting is laughable, animation is basic, clumsy and repetitive (every time you'll hit a pedestrian or shoot one, he'll always fall to the ground exactly like the others), shooting is hard to notice, because the sound effects are barely okay and no impact except an ugly little circle of blood is visible when somebody's shot...also, the missions are long (you'll have to drive for annoyingly long times between them) and boring.

Sure, Mafia does have, in some concepts, a small degree of realism (cars go to 60 MPH, because it's old models), police might arrest you if you go to fast...but since the feel of the game has absolutely nothing realistic or entertaining, you maight not even notice these minor details.

So, don't get fooled, this game is pretty bad, unlike its PC version. If you want a similar game with better graphics and mechanics, True Crime: Streets of L.A. is definitely a MUCH better buy, or there's always Vice City, if a lack of realism doesn't bother you...and if what you really seek is realism in a game, The Getaway would be a good choice.

A decient game

This game is a decient game. The controls of this game I didnt like to much, and they took some getting used to. but other than that, I love the story line that this game has. THe other characters are protrayed well. If you like the freedom of Grand Theft Auto, you will be wating awhile, becuase you have to be missions to get freedom (as in stealing cars and what not.) but over all this game is a must have if you like mafia, gta type games.

I just wanted to say, if you are thinking about buying this game on a console, be prepared that if its not on xbox, the graphics won't be anything like the original version which was released on PC a long while ago. I don't know how the controls on the console will be either, but I really like how I have them setup on the PC. The story is pretty cool and it moves along quite well with nice cutscenes. The graphics are nice to look at also. Although the PS2 version will probably be prety ugly texture wise. Its not GTA and doesn't play like GTA. Don't have the expectation that it will be even like it. It is it's own game.

I also found it [locally]in the little Jewel-case version with no bulky box or books. (The Manual and the Map for the game are a .pdf on the CD now). Print your own manual if you want to have a hard copy. That is by far what makes this well worth it. The city is huge! The NPC's are reactive to whats going on around you, but they don't talk to you unless its mission related.

If you are looking for a fun, mature themed, action/driving/shooting game this should definately be on your list!

MAFIA wins with me!

Great Game

First off this is not VC nor does it try to be. People get GTA out of ur had for 2 minutes and play this game. The story is excellent, the cutscenes are A+, the graphics are very nice, the sound is exceptional, driving is enteraining (especially the race cars), but the collision detection absolutely sux. Sometimes you'll be right next to a person and not be able to hit him. Also where is the blood? A mafia games based in the 30's w/out blood? and by blood i mean when shooting a person, they don't squirt blood and they don't act like their being shot. All in all if you don't mind some frustration (some missions are quite tough), and some clipping and collision problems i highly recommend this title. The story alone is great and keeps u playing.

You spend more time watching the game load for each scene that you get to play. The story takes ages to start getting interesting and even when it does its not that interesting. Also the cars are so slow that you start off with and they turn like a mule. I normally love these types of games, but this one was painful to play.
