Kingdom Flop

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 3

In all honesty, Kingdom Hearts 2 was a disappointment. It was an okay game, but nothing compared to the original.
Most of the time I was watching unnecessary cutscenes. The rest of the time I was waiting for that spark of excitment I got when playing Kingdom Hearts, and it barely ever came.

The main plot was solid enough. Complex yes, but in a good way. Emotional and more or less satisfying. I didn't mind the 4 hour tutorial.
As for the small plots that you had to follow through in each disney world, it was a different story. Whether I was putting out light fixtures in Beauty and the Beasts World or playing dance dance revolution with the little mermaid, I couldn't help but wonder, what's the point? In the original, Sora was traveling through various worlds, looking for his friends, sealing keyholes and unraveling the plot. But he was also playing a part in the classic disney stories with memorable characters and wicked antagonists who actually had purposes. Now he's running around and opening gateways to other worlds so he can search for some wack job "nobodies" who are pretty much trying to accomplish the same things that Ansem was in the original. The old pizaz that used to be there is absent and one can't help but feel that their putting up with all these lame disney worlds because they have to.
I liked Tron and the Lion King okay. And maybe Steam Boat Willy and Mulan. But worlds like Beauty & the Beast or Disney Castle, which I expected so much from, really fell short. Pirates of C. and the worlds from KH1 were just ridiculous.

I would play the original over and over because I loved the plot and the worlds and the challenging boss battles.
That idea never pops into my mind with Kingdom Hearts 2 because I know that 90% of the time I'll be skipping through cutscenes and the rest, battling bosses I could beat with my hands tied behind my back.

It is a rare case when sequals can live up to the standards of their originals. Kingdom Hearts 2, in my opinion, was not one of these cases. It fell short on so many levels and failed to be the awesome game it had the potential to be.

I will allow credit where credit is due and say that the game served good eye candy. I'm no graphics nerd but I can tell when their top notch. And Kingdom Hearts 2 came through in that respect.
But thats not enough to make an excellent game and it's obvious with this sequal.

It was short and tedious, but a fun game; just short of expectations

I was extremely hyped when I heard that Kingdom Hearts 2 was coming out. When I saw the preview with the opening song 'Sanctuary' by Utada Hikaru, I almost fainted.

I loved how the characters were re-introduced into the game and how the new characters were introduced as well. Organization XIII gave an overall darkness to the game and seemed more serious than the Disney villains trying to gain princesses.

Which is why I kind of found it hard to believe how many tedious mini games were in the game. The beginning is understandable because it was kind of like the beginning of Kingdom Hearts where Riku, Kairi, and Sora were together, just being normal kids. However, after that bit, one would've thought that like Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts 2 would buckle down and get a bit more serious and yet you found yourself playing more mini games than necessary even against some of the main villains no less. And if you so much as make a mistake (One could have full hp)you lose, have to watch the entire movie sequence all over and fight the villain over again. Same thing with the Tournaments in the Underworld.

Another problem I had with the game was that leveling up became a lot more difficult than necessary after you got to a certain point in the game. In Kingdom Hearts even after you reached level 50, the opponents were still a hassle to beat (the ones from the last world) and if you weren't careful or didn't pay attention you could lose. You could also gain experience points in the Tournaments, you can't do that in Kingdom Hearts 2.

In Kingdom Hearts 2 you probably won't even be at level fifty by the time you get to the ending boss. Which makes it a bit difficult to win and more tedious than ever to gain experience points to level up. The strongest opponents that you have a 100% chance of winning, are the lower level nobodies that really don't add up to much even if you do defeat all of them in that world. So getting to level 50 is a pain in itself, meaning that fighting Sephiroth, is next to impossible because he's hard even at level 100.

It was alot shorter than Kingdom Hearts. I managed to finish it within four days even though a whole bunch of things were going on at the same time. Definitely too short.

The extra fighting features were awesome and so was the leveling up in the outfits, but because of lack of high level enemies, towards the end, it's just a waste of time to bother with leveling up.

I give it a 5 because it was fun through and through. But I give it a three as my overall grade because it fell very short of my expections and I was disappointed.

This game is really fun!!!!! However, I still have likes and dislikes about KH2. Likes:the drive forms, new worlds, new keyblades, camera system, the fight with Sephiroth, and the rection commands.Dislikes:the game is WAY TO EASY!Xemnas, the final battle is to easy. Finally, the anti form. Overall, this is a classic, just the like the original KINGDOM HEARTS.This is my favorite game.

This game is so much fun youll go to school... wait! no you wont! youll stay home for a week and just totally destroy your eyes and then youll need glasses. So basically this is just going to be one of the greatest games on PS2 of all time. A def' Classic. If you don't buy this game, at least rent it or get it from a friend. But be careful, your friend might come and steal it back because they'll love it that much.

First off let me say that this is the funnest game I have played in a while. Now I will discuss alot in this review.

Music: The music in this game is sorta good. The opening theme is better than simple and clean from the first one. And I haven't beat the game yet. So I cannot comment on the music in the other worlds. But the music in Land of Dragons is okay. Not spectacular but just ok.

Characters: The characters in this game are excellent. Riku is my favorite but I havent seen him in the game yet,but I know hes in there. The Organization are very mysterious. I only know about the ones that are still alive since I skipped Chain of Memories. Sora is grown up in this game. His voice is deeper more like a 15 year old. Not girlish when hes 14. Guess he was late on puberty. But donald and goofy doesnt stand out in this one. There just there.

Gameplay: SO far its real fun. I guess I'm not crazy about this game as I was when I was in 6th grade in 2002. Im in 9th now and I only bought it because I was curious to how it would end. I'm glad they added the limits and drive commands because just killing Nobodies and heartsless gets old fast. The characters changes their clothes. Only leon sorta is the same'cept he has a frilly collar.

The game gets a minus 1 star because the timing c'mon It takes almost 4 years to make a sequel. Reminds me of the Rocky tm. Movies where they got a 3 year interval between each movie.

Overall: The game is great so far. I am only at the beginning but am hooked to see what happens next. I'm not playing now because my controller is broken. So I have to wait til tommorrow.

Kingdom Hearts is top notch

My son loved this game. He plays it constantly, and it is always a challenge. I like the fact that it is Disney-based, and has challenges but is still rated E for Everyone.

WAY too easy

i am a major fan of the kingdom hearts series. i have been waiting for this game to come out for 3 and 1/2 years. it was a letdown compared to the first game. it's a really good game, but there are major things different about this than the first that make the first a lot better. the first game actually had some challenging boss fights- some you had to repeat a couple times and use different tactics to beat. in this game the boss fights are ridiculously easy, even the final boss fight. they really dumbed this game down, probably for the younger players, which is really stupid of them to do- its not like the kids under 10 would even understand the game so why cater to them? even proud mode (hard mode) is easy. i cant believe they spent 4 years on this game. it seems like they only spent a year on gameplay, and the rest on the graphics, cutscenes, and battle system.

-Storyline. The story in this game is so cute. The game starts with you controlling Roxas- a young boy who lives in Twilight Town who keeps having strange dreams of Sora, Donald, and Goofy. Then some stuff happens (dont wanna spoil it!!) and you are Sora and set off to look for Riku. You want to know who the Organization XIII is and who Namine and Diz are, so you would want to play and beat Chain of Memories before you play this game. It jumps right into the plot after the 3 hr "tutorial" as Roxas, which personally, unlike many other people, I really enjoyed. In Roxas's 'dreams' it reviews some of the cutscenes from Kingdom hearts- kinda like a refresher if you forgot some things. Great story but can be confusing if you didnt beat Kingdom Hearts and see the secret ending or if you didnt beat KH Chain of Memories.
-Graphics. The graphics are beautiful!! One of the best aspects of the game. The beginning and ending movies are soooo pretty. The characters in Pirates of the Caribbean look the best.
-Battle System. Wow. This is improved so much from the last, but all of these amazing new added "abilities" you can do make the game really easy. Now, you have a drive gauge near the MP and HP meters, which controls your drive. There are 5 drive modes in all- Valor (merge w/ Goofy- a double-wielding keyblade form), Wisdom (merge w/ Donald- a form where you glide above the ground and can fire magic shots at enemies rapidly) Master (merge w/ donald and goofy- a double-wielding keyblade form that's very fast-moving and swift) Final (the ultimate form) and Anti-Form (a special form that appears very rarely- you can't choose from the list to change into it). Also, you have "Reaction Commands" which are different to each enemy or boss. During a battle, a triangle icon will appear and if you press it while it's there, you will unleash an attack that damages the enemy greatly. There are new summons too- Peter Pan, Genie, Stitch, and Chicken Little.
-Gameplay/Controls. Most of the controls, like lock-on (R1) and shortcut (L1) are the same as the first, so it's not like you need to get used to different buttons. The one thing that is hard to get used to is that there are 2 attack/magic menus. One has attack, magic, items, and drive on it, and when you press the d-pad left or right, you bring up the other menu which has attack, summon, party, and limit. i never used the second menu the entire game.
-Difficulty. 2/10. Way too easy. the only reason it got a 2 instead of a 1 is because during the fight against Demyx (an organization member) you have to fight a certain number of forms in so much time. it's really frustrating and annoying to have to repeat it since you cant do stupid tasks like that, like defeat 10 forms in 10 secs or somethin like that.

Pros
-Amazing Graphics
-Great Storyline
-Improved Battle System
-Gummi Ship is so much fun now! it's more like a mini-shooter game instead of just holding down the x button the whole time like in the first game.
-Improved Camera Control. The camera is now on the right analog stick. and the camera view is better, it sits back further and isnt as hard to control as the first game's.
-New and Old Worlds. The returning worlds are Halloween Town, Atlantica, Agrabah, Olympus Coliseum, Hollow Bastion, and Winnie the Pooh. New- Port Royal (Pirates of the Caribbean), Space Paranoids (Tron), Land of Dragons (Mulan), Beast's Castle (Beauty and the Beast), Twilight Town (you played it in Chain of Memories, but all the worlds were basically the same in that game), Pride Lands (Lion King) and The World That Never Was.
-Skip scene feature. Yes, you can skip cutscenes now, but you want to see them cause they are basically the only reason to play the game. Also, its not like you have to worry about having to watch a cutscene over and over when you cant beat an enemy because all the enemies are so easy that you beat them on the first try. (they should have had this feature in the first game- when i was trying to kill riku (the final time) i had to watch the scene before the battle so many times that now i know all the words by heart.) And, on your second time through the game, i suggest that you watch the scenes again, dont skip them, because the game makes a lot more sense.

Cons
-No exploration like in the 1st game. When you try to go through a door or a different area than where they want you to go, a little thing pops up and says something like "Thats not the right way. We need to go to _____". So don't count on very much control of the game- it basically directs you where to go, kinda seems level/episode based. Like, after you complete a world and are continuing your journey, a little thing will pop up over the world and say "New Episode Added!" So you go there and are directed through it.
-waaay too many cutscenes, but they are what tells the entire story and everything so you do need to see them. it just seems that the game is one big long movie with a little bit of fighting to progress it.
-Little Replay Value. I replayed the first game 8 times. haha yeah i have 8 games on there, all beat. i loved that game.
-Olympus Coliseum Hades Cup. WOw i dont even think you can call it a cup. all it was was 3 easy battles. the "preliiminaries to get into the semi finals, the semi finals, and the finals. the first games coliseum battles were a lot better.
-the ending. at the end, it seemed like there was no point to them including Roxas in the game. at first i like how Roxas was involved in the plot, but then, they just stop talking about him and he shows up at the end and somethin stupid happens. the ending with him was so dumb- it was like there was no point to him being in the game.

Overall it is a really good game, but only for the hardcore fans of this series. I only gave it four stars due to the games lack of difficulty. it was way too easy. also it just seemed like this game was missing that certain something that made everybody love the first game. overall, it was a really good game, and would be good if you didnt have high expectations for it. everybody hyped it up so much that i dont think it was as good as everyone was speculating it to be. id say buy it if youre a hardcore fan but rent it if youre new to the series or liked the first game.

I could play Kingdom Hearts I, over and over but, Kindom Hearts II is too boring! There is too much talking and not enough action. I am too disappointed in this game because of the high standard that Kingdom Hearts I set.

I love this game I've been playing this game none stop this game is so addictive and so much fun. After almost two weeks I beat the game. I love this game so much its so much fun!!!!!! I haven't had this much fun playing a video game in a while. I've never played the first Kingdom Hearts or Chain of Memories, I will probaly get those games later on to fully understand the story in Kingdom Hearts 2. I think fans of the Final Fantasy series and Disney video gaming fans will have a blast playing this game, I know I did. I think its great that they got rid of that turn based battle mode, because its too slow and very exciting, but I love this battle system you can actually run away from the enemy and you can run, and dodge and do combos on the enemy, but when it came to the old turn based RPG's you always had to take the hit from the enemy.I'm glad they made the battle system is this much fun. It has great Final Fantasy characters such as Cloud,Leon,Auron, and Sephiroth, the only bummer I thought was they left Vincent Valentine out of the game. Oh will Dirge of Cebereus is coming out in late summer or somewhere around there. Seriously this story has so much heart. This is a must buy!!!!!! I've got one more thing to say is their probaly going to make a Kingdom Hearts 3, probaly for the Playstation 3 thank goodness.

Great Game!
