Hopefully This Series Keeps On Running

Kingdom Hearts wasn't a favorite of mine. It was fun, but also a little frustrating at times. The battle system wasn't very good, and at times it felt a little tedious. (And then there was Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, which was essentially a card game disguised as an RPG.) It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the greatest either. So, when Kingdom Hearts II was announced and the news was that it would keep most of the same elements of the previous PS2 game, I thought, "Well, at least it's made by Square, right?"

Right and wrong. Yes, Square made it, but that isn't all Kingdom Hearts II had going for it. Everything that Kingdom Hearts I had was enhanced to the point of perfection in this, and old problems (like when Goofy or Donald got in the way during battle) were fixed. Not only was the battle system fun, but the few added elements, such as the forms--alternate versions of Sora capable of different abilities--and limits--special techniques that require certain party members to perform--added a little strategy as well. And the story was good enough to push Kingdom Hearts II back through the same world exploration process; only on a couple occasions did I find myself skipping scenes (at Atlantica and with Poo). Oh, and let's not forget the Gummi Ship, which was so innovative in KHII that I think more ten hours of my game-time was spent building ships and blasting enemies.

The story of Kingdom Hearts II, though, is definitely where the gold is. It picks up right after Chain of Memories ended, bringing back the cloaked figures, as well as introducing a new main character. I won't spoil anything, but the first sixth of the game has nothing to do with Disney and everything to do with the power of Square storytelling. After that, Sora and friends are back, and once again the Heartless have invaded the many worlds. Yet the Heartless seem to be the least of their problems, as Organization XIII, the cloaked figures, have their own, more powerful version of Heartless called Nobodies. Now, Sora must not only lock all of the worlds with his trusty Keyblade, he must figure out what Organization XIII is all about. All this while continuing his search for Riku, Kaira, and King Mickey.

This game made up for everything that the last two made me bitter about. Though they weren't bad games, the first Kingdom Hearts game definitely wasn't the masterpiece that people proclaimed it to be, at least to me. Kingdom Hearts II, though, is a masterpiece. Not only is it fun, but very addictive. I'm on my second play-through trying to complete Jiminy's Journal on a harder difficulty setting, and I'm having a blast. I highly recommend this to fans of the first two games, and for fans of Square games as there are a lot of familiar faces here. However, if you're new to this series, I'd definitely go back and at least play the first PS2 game to get acquainted with the systems.

Easyer and harder than the first but cant stop playing.

WELL FELLOW GAMERS!! THIS GAME COMPARED TO THE FIRST ONE IS BETTER AND MORE!!
Sora and his friends are back in a deeper story than before. Some of the old characiters are back with new ones. Now with a reaction system to make battles a little more interesting and cooler then ever . With addtional move besides summoning there is "drives". There are Valor, Wisdom, Master, and Final forms.

Valor-you have 2 keyblades but cant use magic but who needs magic when you have strength

Wisdom-you have better magic skills

Master-basic way in putting this in is valor and wisdom combined

Final....well you have to play the game to figure that one out

The game is easyer than the first but there are some bosses that are really hard! give yourself a challage..play it on proud mode (Hard) and be proud about it!
Don't ever give up sometimes when your in a tight spot micky will save you!
This game is for kids and adults if people think that this is too cartoony or for babies well they need to live little and some fun. Buy this game, Rent this game, Borrow it from some one just play it for about 4 Hours and see what you think!

By the way, if you can handle a Long intro (depending on the player it can take 1-3 hours so take your time and do not get angery by the intro its worth it!) you can and will love this game!

AWESOME GAME! Worthy sequal!

I do not recommend playing this game unless you have completed the GameBoy Kingdom Hearts game, Cain of Memories. Because the game takes place directly after the events of that game. So either play that before playing Kingdom Hearts II or find an in-depth summary of Chain of Memories plot.
Although the beginning of the game is incredibly slow and it takes a good 2 hours of gameplay before you are actually in control of Sora, the rest of the game is much fun with plenty of things to do.
The storyline make border on the confusing side when it comes to the origins of Ansem and the Organization XII but once you have a firm grip on the plot the rest of the game is fairly easy depending on which level of difficulty.
Sorry to say, for those new to the gameplay of Kingdom Hearts and chose "Beginner Mode" will not be able to acess the secret movie at the end of the game.
But for those already similar with the gameplay of the first Kingdom Hearts, you should find it has not changed much, although Sora's special moves make the fighting more fun to play than just hacking away by hitting the same button rapid-fire. You also have the option to switch to the first Kingdom Hearts action layout, (the list of actions in the corner of the screen)
The graphics are much less choppy than the first Kingdom Hearts and the characters are fare more expressive with thier emotions.
The newest feature of the game are the Drive feature, which give Sora the ability to change into a diffrent form with the help of donald and goofy. Throughout the game you may be alotted more time to stay in a Drive and at the end of the game you may be lucky and get the chance to play in Final Form.

Awesome game....

I'm not a Playstation owner and have never played on one before. My nephew brought his ps2 and this Kingdom Hearts 2 to my house last week and I've been playing ever since. I am so in love with this game. The graphics are intense, the characters, story and battles are awesome. I'm tempted to go out and my a ps2 system just so I can play this game.

This sequel rocks!!! Although this is a great game, there are a one thing that makes the original better than the second one, the story. The story was more interesting in the first one because most of the worlds in the first one were connected to each other so good that it seem like a movie. In this one, it seems there were more focused on putting new worlds than the story, since it seem like episodes from a show. Other than that, the graphics, gameplay, and boss battles are better. This game is a must have for any PS2 owners.

I loved the first game and I am so glad the second game lived up to my expectations. This game was beautifully made, you can see the effort that the creators put into making it. I loved the music, the graphics, the characters and everything else! I bought the special edition guide to go with it and the soundtrack. So in conclusion - this is definatly a game for the collection shelf.
Thank you for reading my review, I hope it has helped you!

Kingdom Hearts II: gorgeous, extremely long, and at times a lesson in patience

Well, the real question about this game is does it truly live up to its name for a sequel. There is no question the graphics are like no other game yet. There is also no question that the characters present very closely resemble the real Disney characters as they are seen in movies.

The Pros: The graphics and music in this game are comparable to movies you see on a big screen. While I do recommend playing Chain of Memories before this game, as it will fill in some of the holes, the plot line is not hard to follow so you may not need it. The learning curve here is very small, especially if you played the first one. They even fixed some of the interface for the character menus so that it's easier and faster to work with. I found that this time around, Sora's attack abilities are much more on the forefront, and Donald and Goofy are much less necessary for any battle scenario. Seeing the characters from other games and movies is bound to bring back a lot of memories (although I found the appearance of the FF7 characters cheesy and over the top as far as their role in the plot). The voices here are great for the most part with a few exceptions. The way the battle intertwines with general game play is what makes KH so incredible. In these regards, this game does truly live up to its name. The music is put behind a full orchestra, making it just incredible to listen to.

The Cons of KH2 are as follows: First off, in order to totally complete the game (complete meaning clear jiminy's journal, not just finishing the game) and thereby seeing the really awesome secret movie at the end of the game, you must be subjected to so very tedious, and at times down right annoying minigames and battles. In the previous game, all you had to do was get all 101 Dalmatians to see the coolest ending. While the sheer number of minigames available in this game is very impressive, there are 3-4 that will hang you up for hours, not because they are hard skill wise, but because 1 (and I mean just 1) mismashed button at the wrong time will make you have to start over from scratch. The one minigame that requires you to escape from the Agrabah ruins took me well over 4 hours to beat, simply because it requires precise timing, not skill. These types of games serve only to be frustrating, not fun. But all and all, I would say that I never found KH2 hard at all, just long. How long you say? Well, by the time I finished Jimminy's Journal and went on to finish the game, I clocked just shy of 80 hours of gameplay (and the was skipping a few scenes here and there), and a lot of that time was spent gathering up all the materials for moggle synthesis, leveling Sora's forms, and his general level. I had no idea when I got this game that it would take that long to complete. It could (and WILL) take you longer if you play on proud mode. Also, don't bother getting the guide book with this game, as the material available online from different walkthough and specialty guides is about 10 times more comprehensive (the book is very pretty and has good collectors material in it though), as the book really only restates what you have to do, not how to do it in most cases. I also think the plot could have been more rich, but the series in and of itself is much more tongue-in-cheek in nature than say Xenogears or FF7. Also, as a side note.....I am not sure about anyone else, but I think the paradigm of boys with blue eyes and spiky hair is getting worn out.....I wish this game (and/or other square games) had more diversity.

While the graphics in this game are worth getting it alone, the completion of the game is worth it as far as closing out the plot line between this game and KH1. I would definitely recommend getting it, but just be prepared for the amount of time its going to require to complete it.

A note on my ratings and preferences:
I have never been able to come close to giving a game 5 stars. There are just way too many ways for a game to go wrong. I am not opposed, indeed I dream of encountering a 5 star game. It has just never happened as it has with movies or books. 5 stars would mean it was a work of art. 4 stars mean it was a truly excellent game that I highly recommend, but it will still have problems. 3 stars is mainly positive but with notable problems-worth trying depending on your preferences. 2 stars are seriously problematic and not recommended.
I prefer storyline and character in a game. I am not terribly good at games and have a very low frustration level and so like the difficulty on the easy side, however, I will fight through difficult play if I really like the game. I read complaints sometimes about games being too short, but I have yet to find one that was too short and rarely finish the games I play.

Kingdom Hearts 2 is a very well made game that just barely squeaked by with 4 stars due to its charm, graphics and accessibility. I will rate on these categories:

Difficulty: excellent! Well, mostly. I read so much about how easy this game was that I chose the moderate difficulty (there were 3 choices I think). a couple of timed fights (yuck), boss fights, and annoying enemies made me regret this, but that is my fault presumably and even so the vast majority of the time the game is quite manageable on moderate, and grinding can help some if you're behind the curve. Naturally the game designers get full marks for having difficulty levels- one of the most important things to me in a game.

Graphics: very very nice, varied and pretty environments, nice looking characters and, in one thing I really was impressed by, some of the environments were very different than others-like a different graphic style altogether, you'll see. you are close in with your character- kind of in the environment (towards the kotor, oblivion side of things and away from the more god view like distance of ffx or shadow hearts which makes me feel like I'm exploring a map, not an environment). my one small complaint would be the smaller size of the environments- a lot of worlds have very little to explore, but fairly said, compared to other ps2 games, kh2 is pretty far above avg. here.

Storyline: okay, I didn't play kh1! This made the plot starting off pretty confusing and actually a bit strange. Nevertheless it was sort of a moody and sweet and very low key story about some kids on summer vacation. I liked it! The story was told via a mix of nicely done cut scenes and click through talk bubble dialogue. They sort of drop the tenor and quality of this storyline after maybe 5 hours (a wild guess) and then the game becomes a lot of mini versions of Disney movies- like little short story redoes of Disney Films within the overarching game story. I mean, I guess playing all these Disney locales and stories is the heart of the game, but it made for a lot to put together into a story, and, fairly speaking on the story side of it, if it were a movie or book, it doesn't work. For a game it is good enough. I would give the storyline a modest thumbs up, enough to keep me going for awhile. How it wraps up I cannot speak to as I only made it approx. half way through.

Game play: there is talking (with, sadly, no dialogue choices), walking around, making it to good quality cut scenes and watching them, a scattering of mini-games, modest character management, and fighting fighting fighting fighting. I found the character development and stat tracking Byzantine in a way that disguises that there is not much to it (this is common in ps2 rpgs), making items, armor/weapon equipping and skills are all okay, but underdeveloped. The fighting has some similar problems. It's complex in a way, but ends up being very situational and though there may be 11 things you can do often it just means you can do one of them by hitting triangle. And usually it seems best to just hit attack until the screen tells you to do something else, which is fairly often. I found the gameplay mixed.

Conclusion: Kingdom Hearts 2 was a somewhat charming, somewhat overwrought AAA game that tailors to any ability (unless the hard difficulty is too easy for some). It is among the best for the PS2, but not so good that I didn't get tired of it long before the end.

Kingdom Hearts II is the best game!

THis game is so awesome! First, I will admit that the beginning of the game is a bit slow as you can't play as Sora right off the bat. But once you get through that, the story is very good and the combat is fun. There are lots of twists in the story to keep you interested and there are tons of cool worlds you can visit. There is so much to do in this game! One moment you may be customizing your abilities and selecting the appropriate weapon and the next you may be preparing for a tough boss battle. You could go to the synthesis shop and create new items that benefit your skills. There are plenty of mini-games to play here and many missions to complete. Plus, you could even unlock a secret ending or boss by advancing in the story. The musical score is teriffic and there are a wide range of songs from the best Disney films. The game is so packed with stuff to do, so it'll probably last you a few months before you completely unlock everything. Overall, this is one of the best games out there for the Playstation 2. It's a lot better than Kingdom Hearts 1. So go out and buy the game cause it's worth every penny!
