...but not a great one.
I'll understand if some of you disagree with me, even loathe me, for what I'm about to write. Indeed, I didn't want to believe it myself. During my KH2 experience, I wanted to think this was the best game I've played on the PS2, and at times, I was spot-on. Yet, in conclusion, there was an emptiness, a longing for something more, that i simply could not ignore.
First, the good. KH2 is the long awaited sequel to Kingdom Hearts, disregading the GBA "Chain of Memories", which was a very different (but interesting in its own right) experience from the first. The story begins where "Chain of Memories" left off, although prior knowledge of that game is unnecessary to enjoy this one. I'd rather not spoil ANY of the story, unlike some other reviewers here, but I will say that you begin the game not as Sora, but as Roxas, a young boy who seems to dream of Sora on a regular basis.
The good of this game is VERY good. The control is vastly improved over its predecessor, and with a free camera, you won't be hating those long battles or that search for an ever elusive treasure chest. Levelling occurs in two varieties - on the one hand, you will gain standard levels for defeating regular field enemies, and will get gains in categories such as strength, defense, magic, etc. However, there are other "bonus" levels acquired by defeating boss monsters or surviving certain events, and here you gain new abilities, more HP, etc.
The battles are excellent, and cure many of the ills of the predecessor. Rather than hoping you can change your stack command to make use of that special attack (as in the original), KH2 introduces "Reaction commands". By pressing the triangle button at opportune times, Sora and company can fire off amazing pre-emptive and counter- attacks against just about any foe in the game. Sometimes, these commands are absolutely vital (such as the fight against Sephiroth or other members of Organization XIII), for without them, you'll be wiped out. All in all, one must stay on his toes throughout the battle - many enemies use special attacks when near death (truthfully, I'm not sure if this is good or bad in the game).
Unfortunately, there is much that is NOT good in this game. Despite some breathtaking battles, the actual discovery portion of the game is quite lacking. At times, your goal is to move forward, one battle at a time, along a completely linear map. This would be perfectly fine if the storyline was any better, but it is very disjointed. At one moment, you're fighting Disney villains and heartless out to rule the world, and then suddenly they're...helping you? No motivation, mind you, is given for this change in tactic. It just happens, and then the villains simply vanish. Moreover, characters are introduced and then ignored for most of the quest (Roxas immediately comes to mind).
Finally, there is a "cheese" factor involved in many of the battles (I lifted this term from gameFAQ's, mind you). Here you are, moving merrily along through a difficult battle until WHOOPS! here are 10 water demons that you must destroy in 10 seconds or its GAME OVER! And just when you thought you were done with the cheese WHOOPS! Here comes Xaldin riding a dragon which makes him invulnerable against your attacks, while kicking your tail from here to Halloween Town! It makes the game synthetically longer, as you will simply lose the battles the first two or three times you fight them. As for the reviewer who says this game is easy, and you can level to lvl 99 in a matter of a week, don't you believe it. There is NOTHING easy about the battle against Sephiroth or (even worse) the 49th battle in the Hades Cup tournament.
And when you finish the game, many of you will be left with a "huh"? or at best a "meh." Things wrap up far too easily in KH2 (unlike its predecessor, which had a very strong story in retrospect). So to quote a famous poet, my final take on KH2 is this: Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Very Good

After you played Kingdom Hearts, their came Kingdom Heart CoM, which I didn't play. I skipped the CoM to just Kh2. Kingdom Hearts 2 explained what happened in the CoM and who the extra characters where and what happened to Riku.
This game is about Sora, Donald, and Goofy get freed from a "never ending" sleep. Sora's "nobody," Roxas, realising that he must give his life up for are hero Sora. He meets Namine who is the person who helps Roxas give Sora back his life and the two boys become one. Saving Roxas from the darkness and showing him who he was in the past and now what he must do. Later he and Sora become one. Sora, Donald, and Goofy soon wake in Roxas's hometown, Twilight Town. Sora meets Roxas's friends and he feels an emotional attachment to them. Leaving to continue on their journey to find Riku and save the worlds from their enemy Organization XIII.
The rest of the plot is well thought out and the graphics are wonderful for that consol and game. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars in overall is that I'm disappointed in Riku's story. I think that they could've done more with it and explained what happened to him in the darkness and how he and Mickey escaped.
Besides that this was a great video game and I tell everyone about it.
Dissapointed.

I was really looking forward to this game as i loved the first kh but i got bored of that because iv'e played it so many times before.
Although i did enjoy this game i found it really easy and too simple. I completed it very quickly and i didn't get a thrill out of it. It was shorter than kh1 and it got pretty boring at times.
If your'e going to get this game, please don't get your'e hopes up..its not ground breaking at all.

This isn't your typical review, I haven't played the game but I have something to say. After reading all the reviews I have come to a conclusion-Make your own decision. This obviosly a hit or miss game play wise. Some people love it some people hate it, the point, you should rent it then make a decision or play it at a friends house, don't buy things based on reviews alone, strangers don't know what you like.
Amazing!!!

I cant blame Disney for this one, its all on Squaresoft. There is NO GAME HERE. Mash on the X button and move on. I know 10 year olds who would get bored with this gameplay. Whats worse, the story- whatever little there is, unfolds very very slowly. Most of the time you go to worlds that re-create the films they came from with wierd battles that make no sense. The sped up versions of the worlds' story make for an experience not unlike seing the Beauty and the Beast 17 minute show at MGM Studios. Only difference is it is experienced for multiple films and in video game form. I think the characters in the prologue showed the most intrigue but alas they arent to be the center of the story. Ignore the Disney freaks here- the only thing worse than a lame Disney sequel is a lame Disney video game!! Stay away from Kingdom Hearts II.
better than the first... but im not happy for buying it...........

What a game- let me tell you. There are some great parts from the original one they included; unique bosses, awesome new weapons, a great storyline. Though were there are some great parts there must be bad.
Kingdom Hearts II was a blast, I loved battling enemy after enemy, the tiny stars that flash up when you attack something with your keyblade reassured me of that. Let me tell you though the beginning started off very slow and confusing. Let me tell you now if you haven't beaten Kingdom Hearts 1 you'll probably be scratching your head the whole game.
You first start off as Roxas, a boy who is suddenly plunged into the Kingdom Hearts storyline. Similar to Kingdom Heart's first part of the game, I can honestly say(and I'm sure many would agree with me) that is was extremely boring and slow. Agh chore after chore, job after job. I hated collecting all that money, preforming stupid tricks on some skateboard that you couldn't skip! The only thing that really struck my attention in that part were the dreams Roxas had- It got me interested in the mysterious, devolping storyline yet to come. Well you can't blame Enix I suppose, I guess they were only trying to build up to the juicy parts.
Oh yes the juicy parts, chopping and slicing every enemy I see with my trusty keyblade- classic Kingdom Hearts. The "ultima" keyblade has returned, just as hard to make, just as powerful, and just as awesome looking. Saving world after world, it was very entertaining how different and unique each world was.
Although I was not use to the whole new gummi ship system, I grew to like it and now I realize it was a ton better than the first one. The trips where you battle hoards of flying enemies might be a little slow and easy at first, but trust me it really starts heating up when you get to the harder worlds. They now have a new boss system, where a boss might randomly attack you in battle. These guys are toughies if you don't have the right equipment, and I think Enix really tried to encourage that. Not only that, you can now travel to the same trips but on a different difficulty level. Rewards for completion include rare gummi peices. Perfect Enix, perfect.
One of my favorite parts were the drive powers. The game so totally needed this. Sora now has the power to weild TWO keyblades at once. That's right... you heard me, two! There are four drive powers that you can activate with a new drive bar similar the magic bar. Already the first power given to you early in the game allows Sora to weild two keyblades. I won't go over the next two, but the last one is a whopper! The final form, as Enix named it is just awesome. Sora's clothes turn totally silver and black, two keyblades hover(that's right hover!) around his hands, he hovers around in midair, and to top it all off when you attack you do insane damage, along with special moves you couldn't do with regular attacks. I would have to say this was one of the most enjoyable parts of this wonderful game.
I'm sorry to say though that the game was really quite easy. Now if I recall correctly one of the fairy people in the beginning mentioned something like "This adventure is going to be twice as difficult!". Man I was all prepared for this great journey, but at the end when I beat it I felt a sence of dispair. I felt as if I had just pressed the "x" button over and over, as a previous customer mentioned. Bosses that use to take quite a long time to kill can now be killed in less than a minute, and you don't even have to be a high combat level. When I defeated bosses in the first one, I felt a sence of accomplishment, but now I don't when the bosses kneel before me in KH2.
Overall- I like to say congratulations Square Enix for once again creating a great game.
