this game is awesome.. it has more than 100 puzzles that you can solve and has weekly download to keep you interested.. some are tricky but not that bad... anyway it's more fun to get someone to solve the puzzle with you

can't say much more than has been said

This game is great. Really makes you think, and even though sometimes it's frustrating, all puzzles have an answer. I've gotten about 60 so far out of 130 (i think) and had no help other than in-game hints, and i've solved all that i've discovered. Make sure to tap on everything in every scene, you never know where a hint coin or hidden puzzle might be hiding. Great for bus/train commutes, time flies!

One of the best casual game for adult players

I strongly recommend Layton to anyone who has not played video games before but likes puzzles and brain trainings. I think this Professor Layton series and the Ace Attorney are the best casual games for adults, to the extent that even the adults who have not played games before, can get addicted. This is not just a collection of puzzles. A combination of video, music, graphics, storyline, and interactivity of puzzles makes this game far different from a book of puzzle. I am not sure how to classify this game precisely. RPG without battles or casual novel game plus brain training may be the best way to describe this game. I suspect even someone who are not interested in puzzles will ultimately find Layton very interesting as this one has many aspects.
My wife (40s) who has never played games and still does not like playing traditional video games got addicted in this one. She used to read a book or watch TV on bed before going to sleep but now she plays casual games like Layton instead. I am not sure if everyone will be able to sleep and dream well after playing Layton but she says that this works for her at least. I bought a white DS for her in addition to my daughter.

the flame that burns twice as bright...

The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long.

When I saw the first ad for this game, I had incredibly high expectations. I love puzzle collections, and I love Level-5 games like the Dark Cloud series for PS2. Despite my high expectations, this game exceeded them all but one.

I won't bother describing the game, other reviews and this web page can do that. Instead I'll just say that it's truly excellent. Wonderful art, both graphics and music, excellent finishing touches (such as the ability to mark puzzles as favorites for easy access later), an engaging plot replete with colorful characters, all to serve as an excellent backdrop to a variety collection of puzzles. The game also has many secrets and meta-puzzles to unlock, as well as extra puzzles which can be downloaded wirelessly every week. Exhibit A: I've owned my DS Lite for many years, but had never felt interested in going online, especially given the DS Lite's inability to support modern wireless security protocols. This game was so compelling that I set up a 2nd wireless network at home, firewalled off from the rest of my network, just so I could play the extra puzzles online.

But even after solving every puzzle the game has, after unlocking every secret and solving every meta puzzle, and even after downloading all the extra content and playing that, too, I've only spent 15 hours on this game, most of that over a single weekend. By contrast, I enjoyed Dark Cloud 2 (by the same company) for 250 hours. Worse, the game is simply not replayable in any way; once you solve the puzzles you're done.

I considered dropping it to 4 stars because of this, but decided that the small size really wasn't that big a deal. It's a perfect gem of a game, and if you consume it too fast, give it to a friend. I'm a lifelong gamer, and I've played many puzzle collections. This one makes my top-5 list of all-time favorite puzzle collections, up there with 1988's award-winning "The Fool's Errand" and the obscure but excellent "Heaven and Earth".

Math skills not actually required (in spite of the confusion)

There's not much to say that hasn't been said many times already, but there is one thing I really want to point out: you don't need to do much math at all. Some people have complained about needing a calculator, but you should know that these people simply don't know what they're doing. Many of the puzzles are designed to trick you into thinking you must perform calculations, but it quickly becomes obvious (especially if you read the hints) that you're looking for the solutions that don't require any math at all. To put it simply, if you're doing a lot of math then you're not thinking creatively enough to find the right solution to the riddle. I don't like a lot of math in my video games either, and this one is perfect.

Fantastic Puzzle Game

I am an adult DS gamer. I LOVE puzzle games and waited anxiously for Professor Layton to be released. I was not disappointed in any way. . . a role playing/puzzle game. When I got stumped, I found myself calling my grandchildren and reading some of the puzzles to them and we solved them together. It has become such a hit in our family, that everyone wants to play with Grandma's DS and Professor Layton when they come to visit. I hope they come out with a sequel to this one.

Too short

I agree with previous reviewers in that this game is too short. It took less that 16 playing hours, which included taking a little more time than I would have liked for some of the puzzles. And I can probably guarantee that others have finished this game in much less time than me.

On the other hand, it it fun and an interesting plot. Fun games, although I would submit a little too hard perhaps for some younger children, or in general those who do not have enough patience or logic thinking ability. But in general, I would recommend it.

A Brilliant, Solid and Endearing Puzzler

Professor Layton and the Curious Village is one of those gems that seems to surface only on the DS--a unique breed of adventure game and brainteasing puzzler. You guide the titular character and his sidekick Luke as they enter the town of St. Mystere in search of the Golden Apple. What unfolds then is a unique mini-mystery tied together by a train of logic, math and perception puzzles, all manipulated by the stylus.

The art style is clean and endearing, with excellently animated FMV cutscenes propelling things along and crisp writing keeping you interested and upbeat. The music is slightly repetitive, but suitable, as it combines an overall unique French-style ambience while you futz over the latest puzzle.

The meat of the gamplay--the puzzles--is where things truly shine. Never really entering the realm of impossible, these are some of the most unique and clever challenges I've come across in a long while. You'll furrow your brow, working your mind like a Sherlock of sorts, and feel the delightful "Ah HAH!" moment when the answer suddenly strikes--and considering the depth, variety, challenge and multitude of these puzzles, you'll have that moment quite often. Plus, with weekly downloadable puzzles, it'll keep you thinking long after the main story is over.

Overall, any puzzle-loving gamer with a DS owes it to themselves to pick up this marvel of a title. It's money well spent, and a cart that I'm finding a hard time removing from my system.

Short, fun, and challenging puzzles

This is a great game for fans of logic puzzles of any kind (if you're not into that sort of thing, don't bother with this game). There is a good balance of puzzle-solving and the underlying mystery story and it's paced so that you don't have too much of either one without the other. It is rather ludicrous when people keep asking you to help them solve puzzles but you'll get used to it. Overall, this has been a fun and challenging activity that I play on my daily commute and even at home. I'm even starting to think outside the box more in other situations. If you like critical thinking, it's a must have.

A charming blend puzzles & mystery

There is no shortage of mini-game collections these days, and while Professor Layton's core game mechanic is solving puzzles, it is far from just another puzzle game.

The game takes place in a little village called St. Mystere, where the town's patriarch has passed away and the famous Professor Layton, along with his side-kick, Luke, must help the townspeople solve the mystery of the man's inheritance. Things aren't what they seem, though, and in no time Layton and Luke are up to their ears in drama and intrigue.

As you search the town for clues, you must solve a myriad of puzzles ranging from simple number games to logic tests that will have your grey matter crying uncle. In addition to the main "campaign" there are several side quests. Completing the side missions grant you rewards like a mechanical puppy that sniffs out hidden treasures in the game.

Although you might expect the puzzles take centre stage here, the story and its characters have so much charm that you will likely find yourself working out "one more puzzle" just to get to the next leg of the adventure. On the other hand, the game also works well when you just need to kill five or six minutes.

The game also does a great job of using a variety of touch controls to keep things fresh. You will point and click your way through St. Mystere, spell out answers, and draw solutions.

Unfortunately, I can't go into too much more detail without either spoiling the plot or the puzzles but suffice it to say that Professor Layton is a must-have for both puzzle and mystery lovers.
