This game is an awesome shooter. I am a shooter fan, especially first-person ones, and when I first played this, I laughed with glee and sheer destructive pleasure. It is my kind of game because I have always been fascinated by explosions and guns and grenades and on and on, so this fit the bill quite nicely. I haven't beaten it yet, because my Dad and I just bought it yesterday, but so far it is great. If you are seeking a game with a great story, look away, because the story isn't really a plot at all. My only complaint is the completely, melodramatically over-the-top cutscenes. Yeah, they're ok, but like I said, they are very dramatic. But I really love to play an unapologetically destruction-focused FPS. WOOHOO!

This is the game that I have been looking for. Its a sweet FPS. My only complaint is that you have to shoot doors to open them(waste of ammo). Other then that its exellent

This is THE shooting game for the PS2. I am simply addicted to the wonderful levels and graphics, the sound (stunning!), and the overall gameplay. Visually, this game is fantastic, aurally, when piped through a surround set-up, this game is brilliant. You can actually place enemies by where the sound comes from over your home theater setup. The controls are respectable, and mostly intuitive, which is good, since the manual is so thin it might as well not have been included.
The only thing I don't like are the cut-scenes at the beginning of each level - although the look and sound decent, they take way too long - keeping me from firing off hundreds of rounds against some semi-smart enemies in yet another smoothly rendered setting.
Definitely, this game is a must-have for fans of the shoot 'em up genre, despite it being single-player only, and no online capability. It literally is a blast!
Probably the best F.P.S. on the PS2, but SO HARD !

Black is a first person shooter game in which you are being questioned for events that are the levels in the game. The first few levels are somewhat easy, but then it gets harder and harder.(I played this on EASY difficulty !)
The graphics are amazing for a PS2 title. The weapons are extremely realistic, and so are your surroundings. And like Red Faction 2, you are able to blow your way through walls using AK-47's, Pistols, ect...(The red items are especially fun to shoot ;))
Overall, this is an extremely fun game to play, but be prepared to be frustrated on many levels.
I give this game a 4 out of 5

The graphics and the effects are very real,in fact, the cut-scenes are actually in real life, very cool huh.The sound is great and the gameplay too.Even in easy mode there are some damn good struggles. There are alot of weapons, alot of destruction and alot of fun.I'd say this is the 2best shooter in the PS2,1one is Resident Evil 4.It never gets old and the graphics are pretty damn good. The game is great but It be the best if it had Online.
great game!

if you like first person shooters (FPS), this game is great! first off, i was a little sick of all the good FPS games being either set in WWII or in the future. this game is based on modern black ops, so it has current weaponry and settings. its a difficult game, but alot of fun to play. i've heard some people say they think the game is too short, but i havent had that feeling myself yet. these are also the best graphics i've seen in a PS2 game.
my only complaint is that you arent able to skip the intro stories to missions unless you've already finished that level. for example, if you attempt a level but end up having to give up and try again later because you have to go out, when you retry later you do have to watch the whole intro movie. its a minor complaint, obviously.
pick it up, its worth it.

The producers of this game have described the game as "gun porn." That is a dead-on accurate description. In a porno film, the plot provides an excuse for gratuitous sex.
In BLACK, the plot is merely an excuse for massive devastation and violence. While there is plenty of violence, there is no real blood. If this game had contained the kind of blood splattering you see in games like HITMAN, it would have been banned in most countries. I'm serious. Even without the blood, it's hard to stomach at times. To be sure, this game is a total assault on the senses.
The graphics are incredible, placing you in environments where you are hopelessly outnumbered. Your hope for survival lies in your speed and accuracy with your weapons, as well as the combustible elements of your landscape.
Beautifully Rendered and Extremely Addictive

Black is one of the most visually impressive games on the PS2. There is a reason that this game has been referred to as "gun porn" by trade magazines and lawmakers hostile to violence in video games. The environment of Black is incredibly detailed, and everything is responsive to bullets and explosions. I've played through the game several times, and I'm still finding new things to blow up!
Black is also one of the few games that offers professional voice overs. Most game dialogue is so poorly executed that it detracts from the quality of the experience, but Black is a welcome exception to that rule. Parents should be warned that some of the dialogue does contain profanity (including the almighty F-bomb). Personally, I found that the language gave the game more of a movie feel and added to the experience, but I'm sure that there are some parents out there who might find the game's profanity to be inappropriate for younger children. Then again, it's a game about shooting Eastern bloc terrorists with an arsenal of high-powered weapons. If that's appropriate for a kid, then wouldn't it be hypocritical to have a problem with R-rated language?
Black's only drawback is that there is no multiplayer capability. Other than that, Black is pure unadulterated fun.

You'd figure that a violent first person shooter developed by the same folks who brought us the Burnout games would be nothing short of spectacular. Well, you'd be wrong. Don't get me wrong, Black is a solid game, but it comes up short of what it could be. Taking cues from Hollywood action movies, Black puts you in the shoes of a black ops soldier with some very big guns as you trek through enemy territory. The game itself looks sweet, even for a PS2 game, and the sound effects and music are wonderfully done as well. All great so far right? Well, here's what ultimately kills Black from cashing in on all it's potential. First off, the game is incredibly short, and quickly gets very tedious; even for a first person shooter. Depending on which difficulty you select, the game is either really easy or way too hard to play, and offers quite a steep learning curve in later levels. Black delivers on the visual and audio goods in spades, but it's the overall gameplay effects that bring the game down, but it's the fact that EA and Criterion didn't feel the need to inject any online capability into Black at all. Yes this is a first person shooter, and it doesn't offer any online multiplayer options, go figure. Besides all the negativity, Black still offers some solid and quick paced first person shooter action, which is something that the PS2 never really did very well. It's worth a look, but be prepared to get bored with it quickly.
Good FPS shooter but lacking in the story department...

This game was hyped up for a long time before its release. I thought this was going to be a legend of a game when i seen preview movies and how you could blow up just about anything and everything. The game had a working environment, just like Red Faction, but seemed to be more.
The game was released and IGN gave it between an 8 and 9 out of ten, and said the game lacked a good story, and was basically a non stop shooter, but nothing else.
Well i finally got it about a month ago. I wasnt pulled into it as much as i thought on the first 2 levels or so. But then it drew me in like crazy! I was not fond of the story, and quickly ignored the cut scenes between missions as i couldnt keep up with the story, and from what i did pick up, i wasnt interested in.
This game is a really good FPS, and some of the environment reacts well. ITs more than Red Faction, but not enough to wow me. And unlike IGN, i didnt feel that you needed to constantly shoot to do well in this game. I was snipering solders every chance i could. There is nothing like a good head shot and seeing them drop. The game gets rediculous when you shoot a guy 20 times and he is still shooting at you.
Another thing that bothered me is in some instances, such as gaining entry to the assylum, the game will continue to produce soldiers for you to fight until you blow up the blockade to the building. I remember in another instance when that happened, i was clinging to life with about 2 little bars, picking guys off left and right, trying to get rid of them so i could clear the mission and not get killed due to my life factor, but they just kept coming and coming for almost an hour. I then realized that the game was screwed up and i would have to use some luck and get a health pack from a fallen soldier and clear the blockade.
The missions are long. It takes between 30min and an hour to complete them. If you die, you start so far behind where you actually were that it takes about another 15 to 20 minutes to get to where you were before. It took me 2 weeks off and on to get passed the bridge level. I would get all the way to the end, after 45 minutes of getting there, and get clobbered by the blockade to the building and i would have to start at the halfway point(which really wasnt even half way, almost 1/3 of the way through). I would just give up on it since i didnt want to waste another 20 minutes getting back to where i was.
Im glad i waited to buy this for 20 bucks. It is a good game, but its not a memorable one like Red Faction was for me. Its something you can pop in once in awhile during those boring periods when no good games come out and just blow the crap out of stuff.
I will say one thing, the music in this game was very very well done! It was a shocker.
