A Little Overwhelming, but Your Eyes Will Bleed

Honestly, I couldn't stop palying this game. Visually, it is the best firt-person shooter on the PS2. Story-wise, it's nothing to write home about. Action-wise, it's intense and unforgettable. Control-wise, it's pretty much a breeze. Depth-wise, it's fairly shallow, but forgiveable. Now, if you haven't played this game yet, and you plan to, remember this: enemies die a lot faster if you just shoot them in the head. I say that because, after expending 15 rounds a piece, enemies usually fall, but one good round to the head will do the trick. If they're carrying a shotgun, several rounds to the head will be needed. And believe me, there are no shortages of enemies what-so-ever. In fact, at points I got a little frustrated when they kept coming because I was either almost out of ammo, or cornered like a dog. Either way, it's still a hoot!
The levels are very linear, but you won't notice until you get close to the end of the game. Since there's only eight levels in all, it's not a very long game, but the levels are literally huge and offer a nice variety. The Enemy AI can be a little dumb at times, but not dumb enough for you to just joy-ride along. There's no SOCOM stealth involved or Ghost-Recon teamwork. Just you and your arsenal blowing everything out of the way, with an occasional friendly AI thrown in (and they actually help out with decreasing the population of baddies)
There are several games I've played without blinking and this is easily one of them. The action can be so intense at times, you'll actually feel submerged in the action. That said, drink plenty of water and spare yourself a few days to even try this game. For replay, I think trying to beat the harder levels is a must, but soon gets frustrating when you're up against thirty bad guys in a small room where you have little or no advantage points to fire from. The weapons are well versed for combat. The M-249, the M-16A2, MP-5, Glock 40-mm, RPG, UZI, Spas-12 shotgun, as well as many other automatics I'm not all that familiar with. You'll get silenced weapons for a few sneaky kills. You'll get grenades for hard to reach baddies. You'll be able to blow up trucks, cars, explosive crates, etc with small arms fire. And you'll be able to create chain reaction explosions to maximize some serious damage.
This game takes the cake in my book for PS2 FPS. I can't think of another one that has better graphics or equally intense battles. My only gripe is the overload of enemies and the amount it takes to kill them. Since it's cheaper now, it's well worth it. I will be playing this one on and off for a long time, but only in short increments, because this game makes my eyes bleed.

Big booms but its short and no replay value

I won't babble like some reviews. I'll just say these few simple truths about his game.

Graphics - outstanding except that the enemies are all copies of each other. Might as well play Duke Nukem or Painkiller.

Sound effects - awesome. NOTHING BAD TO SAY. It's top notch.

Weapons - you can only carry 2. But for some reason, you can carry mass amounts of ammo for any other weapons even though you don't have that weapon with you. On a positive, you can snipe a guy in the head with a silenced pistol from an unrealistic distance. I use pistols on a somewhat regular basis. I know.

Shoot anything red to blow up everything around it. This includes non-red vehicles, large yellow canisters etc. If you think it will blow up if you shoot it enough, it probably will.
I guess I'll call this a good thing.

Cut scenes - Boring and badly acted. You can't stop the cutscene to jump ahead to the action. Even if you finished Easy mode and are now on normal or hard, you have to sit through the exact same scenes all over again.

Movement - The ability to climb over things or jump...GONE, None, Nada, Ziltch. It's a straight walkin game. NO RUN option either.

Length - Very short. I heard people have done it in 6.5 hrs but I took my time and did it in 11 which is still way too short.

Rent it.

Where is the rest of it?

Black is a very fun first person shooter. the exposions are great and the guns are alaso awesome. HOWEVER....... it takes forever to kill someone. I hit a guy in the chest 4 times with an M5 and he is still shooting at me? why? Why???? In real life that is overkill. 5 shots to a person's chest means that you shot him 3 times while he was laying on the ground in agony. Another problem i had with this game is the lack of blood. This game is rated mature isn't it? If so, then I want the full package. I want big guns, big explosions, and blood. Is that too much to ask for? I guess i should also ask why is the game so short? Within a few hours i was done.

If you like watching things blow up and big guns then maybe this might entertain you for a good 3 hours.

This is a game for the kind of people who like to straight up shoot things. The amount of enemies you face in this game is vast, so much so that will keep your bloodthrist pretty much satisfied. The game is simple, aim, shoot, kill. They have added objectives (such as destructing enviroment, finding hidden documents/weapons and blowing briefcases) to add a little more to the missions. I started off on hard difficulty and I can say I'm pretty satisfied with how hard the game has come to be at some points, but once you beat the hard level of difficulty you get to unlock silver weapons, which pretty much makes it a breeze to kill enemies (unlimited ammo, plus, the weapon they give you launches grenades, which are also unlimited) that's if you decide to go and take on the Black Ops difficulty, which isn't harder than Hard, you just have to complete ALL objectives. The only glitches I found with the game is that at some points, when the shooting gets too heated, the frame rate drops and everything slows down pretty bad, which can actually help you to align your shot, but it's still a tad annoying. Other than that, some enemies (guys with shields and shotgun people) can take an insane amount of damage, almost wasting your whole clip and more sometimes. I'd suggest you cheat a little and get an online walkthrough to locate the objectives if you're aiming for that, other than that, enjoy shooting waves of enemies.

black is one of the most amazing games i have ever played on the ps2. the entire game and every thing in it is destuctable. for instance you shoot a car enough itll blow up with a huge explostion. the coolest part of this game is the reloding sequence. the part of the game that most game designers forget about is reloding and half the time the gun just disapers and pops up reloded. but not here, here the guns, relods, and exploshins are all real. this game also has someof the best grafix ive seen BUY IT U WONT BE DISSAPOINTED

Ok, not the best FPS but great in the way they paid attention to the deatails. When your playing the game just notice how much attention they paid to the guns your using. Each one has a different, realistic kick when you fire it. When you reload the gun you are focused on the gun. You can't line up the next shot because it goes all blurry. It teaches you to take cover and not run out holding down the fire button. Not to mention great graphics and gameplay. I might not have bought it for $40 or $50, but for $20, not to mention a greatest hits label, I highly 99% reccomend buying if you enjoy FPS's.

Hope you enjoy the first level ...

Black is really impressive to look at. You can blow up a lot of stuff in the level, not all, but a lot. You can grab different weapons off fallen enemies, toss grenades and shoot them for faster explosions, shoot explosive barrels for killing groups of baddies. If you played the first level via demo or whatever you know what to expect. And then you'll see that on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th all the way up to the 8th level.

You pretty much do the same things over and over with slightly different scenery. Does that make Black a bad game? No it doesn't. I believe they accomplished what they set out to do. It is just like an action movie for 5-7 hours. They "borrow" from a lot of action films. You'll be playing through and have deja-vu thinking you've seen it before and probably have. The one that most stood out in my mind was a sequence where you are fighting in a shower room just like The Rock. There was also a level on a bridge that reminded me of the last American mission in Call of Duty: Finest Hour. So it looks like the took inspiration from all over.

The game play is the same through out all 8 missions which are told as a flashback with live actors in a very loose story line. You have to collect certain amounts of intel depending on the difficultly level you are playing in. Some are serious matters like intel on ex-presidents current addresses and aerial photos of US cities then some are a bit more towards fun like Burnout's rendering secrets. I got a smile out of that one. But the story does have a serious tone about Black Ops and Terroism. Is the story any better than the 80's action films that inspired it? No. It's just there to give you a reason to play.

I rented this game and got through the "normal" mode in about 7 hours. I wasn't really rushing or trying to make it last. The first level you'll blow through in well under 10 mins. Then the rest will take between 30-45 depending on how you play. The last level did take me quite a bit longer playing cat and mouse with the enemy, around 90 mins. So it is a short game, but if you liked what you played at the beginning and don't mind doing it for another few hours you'll enjoy it. I don't really think I'd want to play the entire game over and over, but there are a few levels I enjoyed more than others that I would play again.

With no multiplayer of any kind the only replay value is to play back the less or equal difficulty (if you finish normal you can't have those guns on hard) with the unlimited ammo guns they give you as "sliver weapons". And trying to get the 100% completion. Other than the there is not much of a reason to play the whole game over more than twice.

So if you don't mind playing the same basic level over and over and being done in a weekend get it. If you are looking for something a little more deep in story and length look elsewhere. Overall I'd say most people would get all they can out of it in a rental period.

Total Disappointment

I know this review is going to fall on deaf ears, but I'm going to write it anyway. I know that the majority of reviewers on Amazon are drooling fanboys, but still I will write this. If this review prevents one person from buying this God-awful game, then it was worth writing.

Black:

The storyline is you're some government agent type who was on a mission, and needless to say it went bad. Now you're telling your story from the beginning to save your butt from a life of prison and blah blah blah it's probably the worst aspect of the entire game. At the beginning of every level you're forced to sit through these horribly acted live action cut scenes, and by forced I mean you can't skip them even if you've already passed the game.

Good points: Sound, graphics, and...well that's it.

Cons: AI, gameplay, overall enjoyment.

It does sport some of the best graphics for a FPS these days however that is completely overshawdowed by all of it's bad points. The enemy AI is comparable to Goldeneye for the 64. There is virtually no stealth in the game what-so-ever. You enter the enemy's line of sight and he will now follow you until he kills you or you kill him. Doesn't matter how far you run from him, his ESP allows him to KNOW exactly where you are.
The gameplay is "go in guns a blazing" and kill everything that moves.
Which can be difficult when it takes practically an entire clip to bring down a single person. Black is famous for explosions. This is pretty spectacular the first time you see something blow-up, but it won't take more than five minutes before every explosion starts looking like every other explosion. It's almost as if you're fighting terrorists and evil foreign types inside a fireworks factory. In fact during the beginning of the game they tell you to "Shoot the red objects, because they explode." The AI of the enemy seems to have been set up with that in mind, as you watch enemy soldiers firing and slowly cluster around these little dynamite packs. Convienent huh? It got to the point where I was firing at a single guy in a log cabin, shot the predictably placed red keg of generic explosives, and watched as the cabin was reduced to rubble. All that to kill ONE guy. One reviewer complained that the game isn't long enough and I'm going to complain that it could have been a lot shorter.

Black at it's core is a fluff game, a lot of show and no substance.
If you're looking for a FPS that doesn't insult your intellegence, I would suggest F.E.A.R.

this is defenetly a nice game. iv always been a big fan of shooting games espesually the non stealthy ones which i find incredibly boring and frustrating. i mean forget about sneaking very quietly behind a guy and strangling him, instead, blow his @$$ to hell!shooting people non stop with big hot guns i mean whats better than that? the only down side of this game that i could find are the missions. they are great realistic missions but the reason i dropped a star is because the missions are just to damn long. there 8 missions in this game and they take like 45 min. to an hour or more to beat which is a problem if i gotta go somewhere i gotta quit and start all over. they should make like 20 missions and make them like 15 min. to a half hour. other than that great game.

BLACK is NOT wack and that's a FACT.

We all know Black has a lot of bells and whistles and the graphics are pretty excellent; however, is it well worth its price, well worth its time to play and should you buy it? I'm half way in the game and I have no regrets in purchasing this gun blazing venture. Truthfully, I wanted a new shooter without the shiny cartoonish crap that Halo provides (no offense Halo fans), but more of a realistic kind of nature, like Killzone. If you like that realism and you don't mind the single player only option, get the game. Yeah, 7 hours of gameplay may not be long but, the quality of the game will over compensate that shortage of game time. A lot of cursing involved in the game, but hey who's counting. I choose my games wisely especially since time is not luxury for me. Therefore, if you want a game well worth your time to play and experience, this game is not a bad idea. My needs were met, I'm happy. Killzone, Golden eye 007, Medal of Honor and Call of Duty fans, its safe to buy folks.
