All of the hype is true. Black was worth the wait!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3

Despite all the bad reviews Black has gotten saying that it's too repetitive and the story is lame and all that, well all I got to say is yeah, they're right. The story is lame and the action is very repetitive...and that's exactly what makes Black awesome!

AC/DC has been accused of making the same album over and over again, but us legions of loyal fans would want nothing else. Think of Black like this. Everything about the game works so well, everything else doesn't matter. I mean really, are us FPS fans really into Black for the story? What's our main goal? To blow stuff up over and over again. That's what I call good times. Repetitive? OK but isn't every FPS similar? All of Black's levels aren't anything new for a FPS, but it's done so well it feels fresh. The guns are amazing, and it's great fun to blow up explosive barrels and watch them take out enemies. I personally haven't had this much fun since Killzone. So in my opinion, Black was surely worth thr wait.

most realistic FPS ive ever played

no game in the world matches up to this game. i have only played through 2 missions and i love it more than any other. the guns are beatiful. the graphics and sounds are indescribably realistic. that is all i can say you HAVE to play it for yourself to really get what im telling you. rent it, wait until the price goes down to 20 dollars to get a good deal and buy this AMAZING game.

Great graphics, that's it...

Pros:
Great graphics!

Cons:
It's short (but I got bored and didn't bother to finish it).
Gameplay is too conventional and not really that innovative.
Not realistic:
- One man army
- Dumb enemy AI
- Lots of bullets
- Believe it or not, I can do stealthy sniping with my silenced pistol!!!

If you like FPS, it's worth a try.
But if realism matters so much, don't bother...

From a Non-FPS Fan

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

Yes, I'm a non-FPS fan. This is only the 2nd FPS I've ever played in-depth. My line of thinking is that if I'm running around raising hell and shooting everything that moves (and some things that don't), I want to see what I look like in the game. But I'd heard the hype and decided to rent it.

I'm planning on buying it.

What Works:

1) If your idea of fun is wreaking property damage, then this is the game for you. There is property damage in spades. As usual, target anything red for explosions, but they aren't the only things that can cause collateral damage; try shooting at vehicles. Not all of them blow up, but enough so as to satisfy your inner Rambo.

2) This is NOT A STEALTH GAME. I've been through four levels (more on that later), and the longest amount of time without weapons going off has been about ten seconds. Trust me, silence is the exception rather than the rule, and I like it that way. The closest you come to stealth is using a sniper rifle for some long-range target practice on a 5x scope. I actually don't mind that, but for now, get used to the fact that most kills are going to be from the end of a fully automatic weapon during a not-so-silent firefight.

What Doesn't Work

1) NO JUMPING. If you fall into an area and want to leave, start looking for a ramp or stairs. This applies even when logic dictates you can step back up to where you just came from.

2) You can only carry two weapons, one of which you should save for a shotgun (trust me on this one). Personally, I'd love to carry three, so that way I can keep the RPG as well (did you really think a game like this wouldn't have one?). But the upside is you can carry ammo for weapons you aren't carrying, so load up.

Other Remarks

Cutscenes: Some have remarked negatively on them, but I'm not one of them.

Levels: Some have said they are too short. I disagree. After the first one, you're pulling 45 minutes or so per level. That's a long time to go without a save point.

Enemies: Some have complained that it takes forever to take them down. While I do agree with these critics, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that the enemies are wearing body armor, hence the multiple bullets needed to kill them. If you're looking for "one shot, one kill" weapons, go with the sniper rifle. Or the RPG.

Overall

Like I said, I am not an FPS fan, but I was impressed. This definitely appeals to the "Hulk smash!" part of me, and I look forward to buying it.

Don't forget to blink!

I just got this game and I played it for about 1.5 hours non-stop. I couldn't stop, I also forgot to blink. The action and intenisty are top notch. This is the game that I had hoped Killzone would be, but no online play. Online play would have rated 5 stars.

Great Looking FPS

I am not a fan generally of FPS, as they all pretty much follow two tales. The Doom/Quake/Nukem one where you are saving the world from aliens and domination, and the wolfenstein/medal of honor story where you are in a war. However, I really enjoyed this, as it was greatly detailed. The environments are amazing, the weapons do real damage, however some of the AI is nuts. You go from a sharpshooter, to someone who misses everything, by shooting the wrong way. I can forgive that, because its better then them all being sharpshooters, and them all being nuts and just shooting in some direction. They take cover, and know when to duck. I really liked this game. If you are a fan of FPS Buy it, if not, you should at least rent it.

This Game Has Potential

Honestly as a hardcore FPS fan, I was a little disappointed with the entire game. I had a lot of fun playing it, I mean what kind of FPS fan wouldn't love the ability to shoot and destroy everything in the environment?!!! Everything in this game was as realistic as it gets for the PS2, except the enemy AI. I'd say that real life terrorists are smarter than portrayed in the game. They do like to hang around around all of the explosives while you shoot at them. Also the first minefield you come upon is littered with clusters of mines. This makes it really easy to take out some of your "careful" enemies. Just shoot one mine and the other 6 around it explode!! I also found that a lot of small, brown crates contain small tanks of gas that you would use for your gas grill.

The sound and graphics are amazing!!! I just cranked up the volume and started shooting, I was amazed at how realistic the guns sounded. But there is a lot of room for improvement with the game. There could have been more levels, more ways to kill your foes, and a deeper storyline. Honestly I think this was a great introduction to the sequel, that I believe will be made for the PS3. With a better system to run it on you will have more room for a story, more ways to kill your foes, I mean come on!!!! You are part of a special CTU, this game should include some tactical combat as well as some shoot em up thrills! Also if this game continues to the PS3 There won't be any slow down with the frame rate, or at least I expect that from sony. But I did enjoy the occasional slow down, it gave me time to enjoy the amazing graphics during a few hectic shoot outs.

So overall the game was pretty good for the price I paid.

Pros:
- Great Graphics
- Great Sound
- Great Destructable Environment
- Lots of Enemies to Kill
- Some Replay Value especially if you play the Black Ops difficulty level.
- Great arsenal of weapons
- Easy to learn controls
- Has potential for a better than Black sequel

Cons:
- Horrible AI
- Shallow storyline
- About 8 hours of playtime to complete one difficulty level
- Occasional frame rate slow down (although it wasn't that often and I enjoyed it.)
- Requires almost no tactical battle skills
- The intel and recon you gather doesn't help you at all, except it helps you complete your secondary objectives. Could be built on in a second game if there ever is one.

I really love this game, it's worth the money I paid for it, and will definitly be a must have for a $20 greatest hits game. It's a great game to play again on a rainy day. I'd buy a sequel without reading about it first.

Very fun game....but definitely with exceptions

First off, this is a great fist-person shooter...especially for a console. The missions are excellent, with plenty to do and are very time-involved. Even the easy mode can be challenging every now and then. There is a decent amount of weapons to use, even though you only have access to maybe 3-4 of them on each level. Here's the problem with this game...it all ends there! There is minimal replay value. Yes, you can replay each level at harder levels, but for what?? There are no bonuses, and hardly anything worthwhile to unlock.

It also could've definitely benefited from challenge/arcade modes, as in the Timesplitters series. The TS series took an above average storyline, and beefed it up with a seemingly endless amount of bonus features, side missions, unlockable characters, challenge modes, arcade modes, multiplayer modes, and much more. The lack of these elements is what makes BLACK a good game rather than an outstanding game.

All in all though, Black was certainly a good game. Even with it's sub-par replay value, it definitely holds its own on a very short list of worthwhile PS2 FPS games.

Pretty good PRETTY SHORT

Well Well...Another FPS. But this is not like anyother FPS. Destroy anything that comes your way, EXTREME ACTION too,BUT the game is way TOOOOOO short(I beat it in 6 hours Literally), but its fun to replay it over and over again. The artificial intelligence (sorry im kinda tired) stinks. They are soooo stupid. When you shoot the they dont even know. Bunch of stupid heads...haha...yea sorry bout that. I hope this review helped you. If your loookin for a great quality game try some bond games or sniper elite, try hitman, or call of duty 2

Overall, a very fun game. If you are into "blazing guns" and destroying everything in sight, this game is a must for you. There is a certain amount of "unrealism" in this game. For starters, as you have read in other reviews, is that the AI require an enormous amount of shots to the body, and at times even the head in order to take them out. The only other shortcoming is that if you get killed during the lengthy missions you have to start over from the beginning of that level....or keep your system running so that you can pick up from the start of a particular check point. I would urge you to get the game.
