Another Greatest Hits Bargain for the PS2

"Black" was a highly anticipated shooter for the PS2 that promised to not only push the sytem to the limits of its graphical capabilities but also to provide innovative gameplay thanks to largely destructible environments. It was met with somewhat lukewarm reviews in game magazines, but that was at its debut price of about $50. At its current "Greatest Hits" price of circa $20, it is worthy of more serious consideration.
Black does indeed look as good or better as almost any FPS game on the PS2, and does indeed include lots of very satisfyingly destructible objects, but it does boast a few flaws worthy of note. Chief among them is that the game is relatively short, with only a few missions (though some of the missions can take an hour or more to complete). Sure, once you've beaten the game you can go back and play on a harder difficulty level, but that's something of a cold comfort. Likewise, the longest missions can be hard to play through in a single sitting, so it would have been nice to have a feature whereby you could suspend your game at certain checkpoints throughout the mission.
Strangely missing from the game is any ability to jump or to run faster than a casual jog. You'll sometimes find yourself getting mowed down with gunfire because you can neither reach cover quickly enough (while your enemies run like caffeinated gazelles) nor manage to quite make it over an 8-inch edge in from of you. These account for some of the games more frustrating moments.
All that having been said, "Black" is a fine game at the "Greatest Hits" price, and though it does have a few flaws that do detract from it, it is nonetheless an enjoyable title. Make no mistakes: "Black" is fast paced, actually has a decent plot(!), and provides a lot of satisfying gunplay. If you're looking for a good shooter but you've gotten sick of WWII and are working on a budget, then "Black" is certainly worth considering.
the BEST first person shooter on PS2!

I made the mistake of thinking this was a target shooting type game and never picked it up when it first came out. Big mistake. The pictures on the back of the box showed too many things exploding and didn't give me a good idea about the graphics and complex, detailed levels that this game has. So after recently finishing all the SOCOM games, I was in the mood for another military gun based title. Enter BLACK.
This game is hands down the most exciting, best looking first person shooting game on the PS2 console! The main story is simple: you are a CIA BLACK operative being interrogated by your boss about the details of your mission. Thankfully, the only cut scenes are before each level, after that it's ALL action!
There are 8 levels which may not seem like many, but after the first one, they get longer and longer. Almost seeming like 2-3 levels within one. Each level will start you off with a particular weapon or two, where you then pick up different guns along your path of destruction ( AK-47, M16, Rocket launchers, shotguns, MAC-10, Sniper rifles, grenades etc. ) Along with shooting enemies, the destruction is intense when you take out walls, cars, windows and anything else in your way. Great sound and visuals with splintering wood, shattering glass and bullet holes in everything you hit. Look for explosive objects throughout the levels like cars and gasoline barrels for big explosions! Don't forget to use your weapon suppressor to take out enemies without alerting others close by. Find hidden documents and intel along your path and destroy plans found in safes and brief cases used by the terrorists. The action is intense and riveting, I couldn't get enough of it sometimes. The graphics are incredible and probably some of the best you'll ever see on the PS2!
After playing it on normal difficulty, I quickly re-played it on hard mode to unlock the hidden silver weapons ( unlimited ammo ) and also unlock the BLACK OPS mode which gives you an M16 equipped with a grenade launcher and UNLIMITED ammo! Blasting through each level armed with this was actually easier than the hard mode. Also Black ops mode adds the extra "Destruction objective" where you have to find and destroy certain explosive objects throughout each level. The different levels of difficulty give this game a high re-play value. Even without them, I couldn't seem to put this game down.
The only cons would be that some enemies seem to take an incredible amount of gun fire before dropping. Even at point blank range. And there seems to be NO blood at all. A little splatter would have only added more to the intensity and look of the game which is already incredible. The story ends in a way that suggests a sequel, which I can imagine on the PS3 would be mind blowing. Unfortunately, I have read that BLACK has some glitches when played on PS3 systems that have backwards compatibility. I hope that some games are updated and re-issued on the PS3 system like the new version of The Godfather. BLACK is a game I can see myself continuing to play over and over for it's intensity. I tried re-playing playing SOCOM III after playing BLACK and I immediately wanted to put BLACK back in, it's just unmatched in it's intensity.
too repetive! each level roughly the same

I thought this game was going to be "all that" but, it is too short and all u do is shoot people with no strategy at all! Enemies are very stupid, i mean very stupid, and.... each level u do the same thing; get a gun, shoot the crap out of everything, shoot more people(no strategy involved if i already mentioned) and just blow up crap for no reason. This game is amusing, but i would not buy it, i would rent it. u will never play this game again. Really mediocre game.
Disappointment

In terms of sound and graphics, Black is superior to any almost any other console FPS. Despite its technical brilliance, Black is an utter disappointment in my opinion. The game is remarkably short, there's no story at all, there's no point, the enemy AI is horrific, and you have to shoot each baddie about twelve times to kill them.
What about headshots? Well, sometimes its a one shot kill and other times it takes about five bullets.Don't bother trying to employ any sort of stealth or strategy as you move through each mission. Yeah you'll have a silenced weapon, but after having to shoot the same guy twelve times to kill him things usually turn into a massive firefight.
The game can probably best be described as an A-Team style over-the-top ridiculous Vin Diesel action movie. If you want insane action and the ability to destroy everything that moves, pick up the vastly superior Mercenaries instead.
Very Good FPS!

I'm a big fan of the first person shooters all starting with the MOH series, the SOCOM's, Killzone, and now Black. It is by far the most impressive shooter I've seen for the PS2 platform. Don't get me wrong its not perfect, but its pretty damn good and allot of fun. My biggest gripe is that at times it takes a few to many rounds to the head to take the enemy out even when dead on, but not as bad as Killzone. Biggest plus being weapons realism and the ability to pretty much blast anythig in the screen, i.e. RPG to a huge fuel silo that sent up an impressive mushroom cloud. Game moves fluidly and each level has dynamic gun battles. Graphics are as good as there going to get for PS2 and its strictly gun play, no hide and go seek here. I Highly recommend it!
great game

black is a great 1st person shooter game. it is very challeging and exciting. 1 downfall is you can not start thr game off at the checkpoint. if you make it to a checkpoint and die, you have to start the whole mission over again
Holy Moly!

I have played a lot of FPS games, both computer and PS2, but Black takes the cake! I rented this game and decided to play the 'hard' level and what a trip it is to play.
Not only is it challenging but highly addictive. Make sure you leave the PS2 system on if you decide to stop playing; otherwise, you will find that the game does not save your game play unless you finish the level.
Watch out for the guys running around with the hockey-style masks on, they have shotguns and superior armor over the other enemies, making them much harder to kill.
For a more realistic approach and hair-raising experience, I suggest playing Black on the 'hard' level, you won't be dissapointed.
This game Rocks!!!!

This is the best game I haved evered played in my life! Rainbow Six Raven shield was ok, and Lock Down was good. But Black? I have a feeling I will be playing black for a long, long time. The graphics, sound, gameplay are very damn good!

"black" is a perfect example of a game that looks cool but does nothing above sub-par. there's no story (you hear military-sounding dialogue over your radio that doesn't mean anything, oh yay), the weapons are cool enough but nothing new.. most of this could be overlooked IF IT WERE A FUN SHOOTING GAME, but alas, it's not, not at all. the controls suck.. aiming isn't done well (especially compared to a game like urban chaos: riot response), and it takes too long to move your view around. really i'd rather play pretty much any FPS game over this one.
great game

Awesome game, very well worth the buy, that's all I have to say about that. Now for the dude that wrote the review for this game that might as well have been a novel, man don't you have a life. That's all for that.
