No 2-Player or Online/Multiplayer...BOOOO!

After walking into my local game store a month ago and seeing this game on the PS2 demo screen, I was wowed by the "Blow up everything that is in your way" style of the game, and immediately pre-ordered it. The game looked sharp and sleek on the hi-def demo screen, and I couldn't wait to play it. Even the gentleman at the game store was anxious for Black to come out--he was curious to see if it would have Online Multiplayer features.

....To my dismay, when I finally received the game yesterday, I saw it was only for 1 Player--there are no 2 Player or Online/Multiplayer features at all. The game is difficult even on Easy setting (I am not the best video game player, but I had difficulty staying alive on both Normal and Easy settings). ....I really wish the crosshair was bigger (though I may have to fiddle around more with the settings, I haven't tried making it bigger yet--right now, the crosshair is a tiny white dot). And I also wish the AI were a bit smarter instead of walking into my line of fire.

....On the positive side, the movies are great and the music is really beautiful. I am giving this game 3 stars because it's a lot of fun to make huge explosions after shooting a farm silo with an AK-47, or if one of your stray bullets hits something you didn't know was explosive. (That and because I haven't finished the game yet, and I am sure it gets better as the game progresses--at least I hope!)

I am sure by now you have the basic idea of what the game is like by reading the other reports. Everyone says the same thing....which there is nothing wrong with....because they are right. The game is a very simplistic FPS. It reminds me of Goldeneye for N64....just high on graphics. Now for my gripes....from a military view point. I am someone who loves military accuracy.

The thing that drives me nuts is the Ak-47. The bolt in the game is on the left hand side. Show me an army that has as standard issue a lefty gun....and I will shut the heck up. I am sorry...but for how amazing the graphics are...get the bloody gun right.

The typical silencer waste of time. I love how if you use youre silencer...they don't hear you....the moment you take it off they do....but interesting enough they fire without them....and everyone sleeps. That Ak is a loud gun...even with a silencer....please.

Now this is a game problem as well. It takes nearly 40 rounds to drop an enemy. Show me a weildable ak-47 clip that holds 60 rounds...and again I will shut up. Also....i think any man would drop after one round of 7.62x34. 9/10 out of 10 thats gonna be armour peircing if its from the military....so the whole vest thing...never gonna happen. Flak vests and "bullet proof vests" dont stop rifle rounds at close distances....and they do not stop armour peircing. I want to be able to tap that trigger and drop my opponent...not waste an entire clip on him. That drives me insane. That honestly takes the fun out of it for me.

As a lifelong fan of first person shooters.......

I can honestly tell you that BLACK does it right. I have played Wolfenstein, PO'D, Doom 1-3, Quake 1-3, Goldeneye, 3 Medal Of Honor games and Call Of Duty 1-2. Those should be enough reasons for you to consider this review valid. BLACK feels right, sounds right and looks phenomenal! You will not see a better looking game on the PS2. This 2006 release is as good as it gets with the old PS2 engine. The developers truly maxed this system out on BLACK. The game has large environments, digitized sound right from the "real world" guns you are using and the best explosions I have ever seen in a shooter. You are a secret operative fighting in Eastern Europe. Your missions are straight-forward and violent. The enemies are smart and will take cover as quickly as you. I was truly impressed with this game. The enemies speak Russian, the guns FEEL and SOUND deadly and the level designs throw you into the missions. My buddy actually GOT LOST in the forest at one point. No "pathways that you must follow (aka Doom 3, Medal Of Honor or King Kong). You can wander around and find hidden outposts, caves and weapons. Wicked cool game. The ONLY thing I would change is there is no option to look down the gun sights (aka Call Of Duty). You can zoom into a target to see it better, but from the side of the gun only. Oh well. Worth every penny. No puzzles, little story, LOTS of killing.

This game is amazing. Beautifully detailed graphics (better then some xbox360 games), Great fun gameplay, and a very well built fun game over all. When you blow an entire clip on your enemy..look down.. and you will see every casing from that clip.(they dont dissappear!) and everything is destrucatble which makes it VERY fun!This is the first shooting game i have ever been able to say that i LOVE

only 2 not-so-strong pints are the fact their is no multiplayer whatsoever, and that you cant save checkpoints (only save after each level, if you die you can restart at a checkpoint...but cant save and quit and come back).which the first didnt bug me, the 2nd thing can be irritating but it doesnt kill the great parts of the game.

But i HIGHLY recomend you buy this game if you like shooters or great games in general. If you are a bit skeptical...or dont know if its for you...rent it..im sure it will change your mind.

i would type more detail but you can find the details anywhere:) and i want to go play it some more!!!

UPDATE on march 5th: I would change this to 3 stars overall. Because sadly, i just beat the game and it is horribly short. It would probably take 1 day to beat if you had the time. (it took me 2 and a half).So factor that in when considering buying it...

If you like games that have big guns and big booms then this is the game for you. The graphics are amzing and detailed. I highly recommened that you buy this game.

This is a great shooter, my only complaint is that it was TOO SHORT!

Just to clear things up..the AK-47 fires a 7.62x39 shell..and they have a drum that holds 75 or a hundred rounds for this weapon...Thanks

This is the best shooter I have ever played,the other ones could take a lesson on bullets and explosions.Unlike some games that bore me to death with puzzles and mind games this is what a shooter should be.The controls were easy to master and the bad guys were pertty clever and some times very hard to take out.I also liked the enterveiw between each level.Some of the other shooters you cant go forward till you do some mind game or puzzle,this is a shooters shooter.

Yo siempre he sido fanatico de los juegos en primera persona, sobre todo de la serie de EA como lo fue Medal of Honor Frontline que a mi parecer habia sido el mejor juego de este tipo para el Ps2, pero de repente me meti a Youtube y sin querer encontre un video de este explosivo juego llamado black y decidi comprarlo para salir de dudas, la primera impresion que te da es muy buena, muy buenos graficos, efectos de iluminacion y la capacidad de que tus balas afecten casi todo tu entorno pues no estaba nada mal, pero para personas que ya han tenido un poco de experiencia como yo en este tipo de juegos resultad un juego corto, que practicamente terminas en unas 7 u 9 horas maximo, otra cosa que no me parecio fue que practicamente estabas combatiendo contra cientos de Terminators ya que tienes que vaciar practicamente una tolva para cada enemigo segun la distancia que te encuentres, sobre todo los odiosos tipos con escopeta que practicamente parecen indestructibles, y algunas deficiencias minimas en la movilidad..... bueno para cuncluir les sugiero que lo compren, es muy buen juego, graficos bien logrados, ambientes, armas etc. definitivamente tiene mas "Pros" que "contras" tendras garantizadas tus 8 horas de juego bastante entretenidas y explosivas.

BLACK, surely to be one of the greatest games of the PS2 generation, is explosive, fast-paced, and fun.

First, lemme start off with the cons of this game. Yes, even as great as this game sounds, it does have a bad side. The soundtrack could use some work, such a game with the smoke and debris and bullets flying every which way, reminisicent of The Matrix, needs a matching soundtrack to get your blood pumping. Very rarely is there any music at all, and when there is it's orchestrated, none of the rock or metal we all like to hear when we're tearing our enemies to shreads. It wouldn't hurt to give the AI a little bit more of an edge. The enemies on here use no strategy, and aren't very concerned about dying. Even though it works to your advantage, they tend to hide behind large, particularly explosive, flammable, toxic, or anything harmful, objects. Why? No one in their right mind would do this in reality. It takes too many shots to kill one person also, if someone can take 15 bullets to the chest and live, they're a god in my world. Wouldn't hurt to add a few more enemies too, maybe some bosses to mix up the bland assortment of generic units that come at you. And what's with these guys with shields? The first time I encountered one, this is what I though: "Pfft. Like that shield's gonna help you." Was I proved wrong. Their shields are indestructable. I mean, come on, I blow through a wall with my spas 12, but not a plexiglass, inch thick shield. The reloading is horrible, everything is blurry and your characted focuses on his gun and not his surroundings. In real military training the recruits are made to disassemble and reassemble their guns' blindfolded. With such training you wouldn't need to even look at your gun to reload.

Now on to the good. The pros far outweigh the cons in this game. The enviroments are highly destructable and exploitable. Plenty of cover. The only problem is you have to watch your back, as your cover could be blown if you're not looking. I am being literal when I say blown. Plenty of guns, it's nice and mixed too, not a whole bunch of assault rifles and nothing else. Lots and lots of detail, gun parts actually will clank when you're moving, or jostle. Nice difficulty setup, all difficulties are the same, with the exception of lots of health kits, few health kits, and no health kits, which makes a huge difference.

All in all this is a great game for any FPS fan, who loves lots of carnage and destruction.
