First off I would like to dispel a few things right up front. This game is not the best, revolutionary, nor as great as perfect as anyone says. It has glaring problems, but it's a sequel to a game everyone loves. So I'll go through some of the issues I have with it and let you decide for yourself.
The first thing is the whole `gimmick' side of the physics engine. Yes it is as great as they say, hell its better. But the way they use it is horrible. With a game as linear (we will get to this later) as this you really don't need a physics engine so grand. You will constantly find yourself in a place where you have to move one object from point a to point b to allow yourself to move on. This is not a great or innovative thing, specially when they could of allowed you to do so much more with it. I found myself tiring of it fast, especially after the third or forth set of `lift this move it so you can move on or get the next health pack'. It is first a gimmick and second an amazing feat.
The next thing is the AI, I have heard some people say this AI is smart. Hell some say it's the most realistic AI ever. Sure it is, if you find most people willing to stand in the open repeatedly shooting you while you shoot them realistic. At one point in the game I opened a door and found a group of enemies on the other side, I retreated inside the door and waited a few. The door opened and an enemy ran through, I of course shot it as quickly as possible in the head a few times before it died and the door closed. With out failure another and another came running through till they where all dead. As well, they have what seems more to me like a randomizer to allow them to run or hide here and there, though not intelligently. I ran into a few during the `canal' sequence where they would shoot from a bridge, run a few feet then shoot again. They never actually seek `true' cover. This AI is not only NOT smart or great; it can't even compete with older games.
As for the hype, it was way over done. Of course gamers get worked up when a title (especially a sequel to a great game) is coming out. They just tend to forget to judge it based on its merits and not it's original. This game is extremely linear and in a day and age of the `sandbox' game, you truly get put off. I found myself able to just run constantly and grab a pop in my other hand. If I had to shoot I tended to just stick with the pistol, hell I didn't even use a grenade till I decided I had to see what it was even like in this game. It isn't overly difficult if you are used to first person shooters, and the extremely linear game play does hinder it. The story is cool, and won't disappoint you. But if you really are looking for something `innovative', `new', or even `creative' this isn't the place to look.
This game is another first person shooter, with pretty graphics and an overly used physics engine.

I can't play console game anymore after this.

Oh god. Here we go again. The hype of greatness is about to be squashed under the steel heel of Valve.
Don't ANY of you get it? This game is NOT coming out in November, no way, no how. I bet ALL of you it's gonna come out sometime in spring 2005. My reasons? Check it out:
1) Valve is SCARED to release the game, because they know that the modding community could make money out of its "brilliant" creations.
2) The game is SOOO complex that it will take a WHOPPER of a computer to run. Valve's answer? Try and make the engine run on lower-spec computers, thus increasing preproduction time tenfold.
3) One word: Competition. It's taken so long for Valve to get this stuff ready that the engine may look insignificant to upcoming games like Tribes 3 and Halo 2 (You all know it. They have to make a PC version.)
I hope I saved many pre-orderers from months of frustration. Don't buy in yet. Just let Valve take its time...

The five stars is what I want, but we'll have to wait and see.
I loved the first one and I remember when it first came out.
I have high expectations for this game, but I also hope it dosn't take to much out of my computer.
Half-Life revolutionized first person shooters and I can only hope that this one will go a step further.
rocks

NOVEMBER 1. Jeez, just when I was thinking HL2 will release on September 1, they do this to us all. This game is turning out to be a real Keyser Soze. When, if ever, will it be released. After playing Doom3 and getting bored after ripping the millionth imp to shreds, I think "thank god I can play HL2 in September" I can understand the source code theft and all, but PLEASE, are they redesigning EVERYTHING. They've been doing nothing but work on HL2 since the original, and I'm getting sick of all the release dates, maybe Amazon should change it to "Indefinite" It really hurts very badly to see the release date slipping away like this.
Boring, been there done that.

This game will blow the original half life away! Oh wait.... Unreal, Unreal2, 2003, UT, Quake 2, Quake 3, DuesEX, and even the "when its done" trailer for Duke Forever ALREADY did that.
hmm big surprise. Unreal2 dissapointed. *snif* Doom 3 will fill the void, and one day fan boys will forget why halflife ever sold.
Delayed Again?

I think it is poor practice for a game developer to release a data in which I may purchase their game only to retract it. Whose idea was it to retract that date and why do they still have their job? If this game isn't released on Nov 1st. I simply won't be purchasing it. I was expecting this game on a certain date and it was not delivered, by no fault lying of Amazon.com's. So far, My rating of 1 Star in both categories stand.
HL2... Will it match HL1?

I haven't played HL2 yet, but I'm going to be the first to play it. The first Half Life was the best FPS ever. I just hope they don't screw it up by getting too Quake on us...
Let's all just keep our fingers crossed that it doesn't ruin the memories of the first HL.
dude, this sucks

hey all. i just thought i'd add my say, being an amateur computer user, instead of any of these clever computer experts.
frankly, i'm annoyed. i think that valve's paranoia about half life 2 being cracked and modded etc is OTT. they have to come to accept that, no matter what they do, someone who is cleverer than them WILL take it to pieces.
i also agree with some of the other reviewers; that the enthusiasm for the game is dwindling now. i don't believe that that will mean that when the game is FINALLY released that the sales won't be phenominal, far from it. i just feel that valve have fallen flat on their face while trying to find the opportune moment.
hell; i'm still going to buy it. if it ever gets to england. which is.... likely but probably quite a lot later than america.
oh yeah, and to the guys that thought it might be fun/useful/profitable to hack valve and steal early source code, bringing the date back further, cheers. not.
