A great sequel!

Though I didn't think it would be possible without adding real pictures, the graphics on Riven exceed those of Myst. Every scene is elaboratly detailed and very pleasing to the eye. The sounds and music are much better and sound even more realistic. They also have added more animation. You see more things moving around that makes it seem like you are more involved in the game. They have also added some very cool features such as a roller coaster type vehicle that lets you travel from island to island and a submarine used to travel underwater. The game play is much the same as Myst, but sometimes you have to go to one area and do some things to complete a puzzle in another area. You also have to learn the Riven math system to solve other puzzles which I thought was a cool idea. Ultimately, all these things add up to tougher game play, but this game is well worth it.

Outstanding Sequel to Myst

Hold on to your seatbelt! Atrus wants your help to rescue Catheryn and capture Gehn. In this excellent sequel to the most popular CD game, Myst, you're back to save the day. Between the fascinating puzzles and live people videos (not graphic animations), get ready to be immersed in a whole new set of ages.

Riven offered several key items that kept me spellbound. The rides on various vehicles in the game, including a mine car, a Tram-like device called a Maglev, and the beautiful scenery in the sub ride kept me spellbound.

Two puzzles were super tricky, but I enjoyed working with them and thought they added some spice to Riven. Notably, the animals of Riven and their figures will keep you on the edge of your seat (possibly pulling out your hair, too).

The beauty of Map Island and the devices of Crater Island kept me coming back for more, even after solving the game. After the let down of Myst's ending, great game that it is, Riven ends with a bang. This game will prepare you to anticipate Exile, coming out soon!

Get Riven: Find Catheryn: Capture Gehn: Lose yourself on a continent that was riven by an unstable man!

A riveting experience in gaming!

"Riven" continues the story where "Myst left off, as the man we left in the beginning is now desparately searching for his lost love, in a world that seems to have been created out of mayhem. Once again, we are required to think beyond our general instincts and imaginations, and pick up those small clues we believe to be insignificant. Once again, we are subjected to the same lush and beautiful worlds that completely envelope us in mystery, only this time you may get a slight feeling that you are not alone. The graphics are much more advanced and mature (it took five disks to create the game), and the inventiveness that goes into their creation is astouding and beautifully presented in this masterful gaming experience which will not quickly be forgotten. The mystery is still there, and that's what's most important. Not to be missed!

still the best

i did this puzzle game again right after having finished exile. both with the puzzles and the graphics, this game is a product of genius. although the colors are not vivid like exile (they tend to blue and grey), the ambience is better. looking at that dinosaur cove could lower your blood pressure with its placid tranquility. riven (and myst) has a lived in look that is missing from exile, such as gehns office, his lab, and the village. exile is more sterile. the characterizations of gehn and catherine i thought were better than saavedro, both in writing and in person. with respect to puzzles, just getting around is a challenge. even though most of the islands can be approached from 2 or 3 directions. the puzzles are ingenious without being too hard; the moiety hideout can be solved by two different approaches. my only hangup was getting out of that cage in gehns office, where i was killed. another point where riven was better than exile was no long pauses after clicking, and i didnt miss the ability to pan. in summary, i still consider riven the best game i have ever done. note: despite the opinion of prior reviews, you can like both riven and deus ex.

This Game is so cool

This is the most awesome expansion ive seen. The Riven has scary scenes example- underground, and the most beautiful scenes like the lake and such. But this game is very hard you must remember every thing you see or hear if you dont you may be missing a big part of the game. I recomend a notebook to keep every suspicious thing you see cause if you dont you'll have to go back to where you found the clue if you remember where it was.

breathtaking but a bit lonely

This game for sure has some of the most amazing graphics out there. If you want a frequent "WOW" experience, this one is a must. However I didn't finish the game; not because it's a hard nut to crack, but I lost the energy because there is nowhere real interactive encounters with a single living soul. It is one to fly through an unequaled beautiful world, but life in the game appears to be vital, at least to keep my attention. All in all a true must to have experienced!!

A Great Place to Lose Yourself

If you have a vivid imagination and love to immerse yourself in alternate realities, you will probably love this game. It has the poignant beauty and haunting aura of Myst, with a bit more action and, yes, despite what you may have heard, SOME dialog and interaction (mostly later in the game). The puzzles are neither obvious nor illogical, though you may have to wait to find the answers to some! But if you have taken to heart the game's authors' recommendation to write notes, even a journal, and read any other journals you gain access to, and pay attention to every detail of your experiences, you should only rarely, if ever, have to resort to a hint book. If you only enjoy fights and arcade style action, or don't have the mental capacity to believe you are really in this place, where an entire world's fate depends on your creativity, courage, and astute analysis, not to mention patience, then you probably won't be able to get into it and enjoy the challenges or the aesthetics of the game. Also, if you can find and read the first two Myst books (The Book of Atrus, and The Book of Ti'Ana), before you play Riven, the additional background will help. Even though Riven's interface is a bit stodgy compared to Exile's (another excellent game!), it is still a tremendously engrossing world to explore.

My all time favorite

This will be short. Simply put, Riven is my all time favorite game. The story is deep. The graphics are excellent. I was fully absorbed. If they could create a game with graphics like these in real time 3d - could you imagine. It's a great game.

Saving the world

Out of the three Myst games Riven is definitly my favorite. In Riven you were in an inhabited world where you actually saw people, and felt that you were in a world where people actually lived, more so than with the other two games. Plus I don't know about you but theres something very satisfactory about saving a civilization from destruction. I also think that Riven is the most beautiful of all the Myst games. The Moiety age (the one featured on the cover of the game) Was awesome. The puzzles are hard, but if you think about it long enough it will come to you. I've played this game five times, and it hasn't gotten boring.

really, really great!!!

I really love this game. Next to Myst III: Exile, it is one of my favorites. The graphics are simply amazing! The downside: if you don't have a strategy guide, you're doomed. I mean really and truly DOOMED. However, I HIGHLY reccomend this game. The graphics deserve an enthusiastic WOW.
