This game is AMAZING. I would say that I don't really like Myst, just because its worlds are soooo desolate, and there is no interaction. And the graphics in Myst were [junky] (dont have realmyst yet, soon i will...). If you were going to use a walkthrough, there was no point.
I confess, I used a lot of hints in Riven... So I had to use it some. But with the intriguing story line and awesome graphics, I didn't really mind. Also, the ages aren't like 34 square yards, like in Myst.
Some non-spoiler hints to those thinking about buying Riven. 1) Write everything down. Stuff you see on Survey Island, for example, will help you enourmously on Temple Island 2) Look in every direction at every node. Otherwise, you'll miss clues, and worse yet, scenes. 3) You can only die if you are REALLY dumb, or [CENSORED BECAUSE OF SPOILERS], so dont be afraid to try anything, or click on stuff.
I CAN'T WAIT ANOTHER WEEK UNTIL MYST 3!!!!
PS.[I wish they would] make an updated version of this one like [they] did with realMyst. I want 360 degree panning in the most amazing world I've ever been to!
PPS. Also, if you do, I want access to more parts of the Moiety Age and Age 233! And I want that grove to be put back in Survey Island!

If you like Myst, you'll like Riven. One of the most interesting areas is the Stone Pillar Gateway Room. This room is the gateway to the Mioety Age. If you put all of the animals in the correct order (you push them down to ground), there will be a bookcase right in front of you which will take you to the gateway of the Mioety Age (or in other words, Pod World). You won't be staying in Pod World for a long time. That's good, because you'll be trapped in a jail cell the whole time you're in Pod World (to be correct, you'll be outside for about one minute and then you'll get shot in the neck by a dart and then taken to the jail cell).
Two stars for the graphics - but the game play is impossible

The graphics on this game are very pretty and make the game seem quite fascinating for the first week or two.
After a week or two of playing this game, however, and you will realize you don't have a clue what is going on. Anyone who says they have figured this game out without a guide or less than a year of their life invested playing 8 hours a day is a liar.
The game is impossible to figure out unless you are willing to decicate your whole life to it. Period.
So if you like a game with neat graphics that you will roam around in for hours on end, clueless as to what is going on, then Riven might be for you.
For those with less time I would recommend a game like Grim Fandango, instead of Riven.

This game has stunning scenery that changes continuously. You are drawn into the world and mystery of Riven, and the storyline is great, too. The only bad thing is, the game is frustratingly hard, but alot of fun to try and figure out.

This game is so cool it is not to be believed. I LOVE IT! If you thought that the graphics were good in Myst, Riven's are 10 times better. The story is amazing. I loved the way all of the pieces were connected. It took a while to get everything sorted out but once I did it was really cool. The only bad thing is that you can easily overlook some important things while you are on some islands, but the way everything looks makes up for it. Sometimes I could actually imagine I was in Riven. It is one very cool game.
Diffecult but not Impossible, maybe....

I just finished Riven and it was one of the most exciting games I have ever played, if not the most. The graphics were superb and I felt like I was on a roller-coaster ride many times. The puzzles were diffecult, but I got through the majority of them with only a few hints, but I'm not sure I could have done it without help. I'm really looking forward to whatever sequel RedOrb has in mind. It will be at the top of my list as soon as it is released. Check out the web site on the Riven box for input and help, but then if you are as into puzzles as Riven fans are, you don't need that hint. Go for it. Give your imagination some exercise.

Riven is the game that hooked me into the Myst series. Its photo-realistic environment, immersive gameplay, and rich atmosphere created a great gaming experience. The interphase is simple, and even the most casual gamers will quickly learn the intuitive controls. Unlike, Myst and Exile, the puzzles are very much a part of the environment you explore. This offers both good and bad points. For those who found obvious puzzles of lever pulling and sequencing of Myst a bit too out of context, the more subtle puzzles will be a refreshing change. However, sometimes it can be hard to figure out what you are supposed to be doing, and few of the puzzles yield immediate, observable results, which can cause a serious lack of direction at times.
Some may detract from the "slide-show" format of the game, but to render the game in real time would either require a massively powerful personal computer, or detail would have to be sacrificed. Therefore, it is preferable to keep the beautiful imagery in the still images. Sound effects are amazing, and the world is brought to life by these, and the ambient music provides atmosphere but is not intrusive.
Pros:
Beautiful graphics
Great sound
Immersive environment
Easy to learn controls
Good story
Cons:
Puzzles can be difficult to unravel
Overall, I still think Riven is the best of the three Myst games. The world is complete, including a culture and a numerical system to learn. I like the way puzzles are fused so tightly witht he world around you, but casual gamers may find them difficult and unfulfilling. In short, Riven is a must have for fans of the adventure genre, but be prepared for a challenge.
A must play!

Wow this is a great game. Even better than Myst. The graphics are better and also the story. The only down side to Riven is that you have to keep putting in CD.

Riven was quite an adventure. Suround sound speakers will bring chills to your spine. I started it with a 166mhz pentium and had freeze problems. Then with a 900mhz computer no problems at all. Great Game
2 Thumbs up, and a 5 star.

Pure Genius. What else would you rather be doing than exploring a whole new world? This is a beautiful game that has a smart storyline.
