Grand theft auto III and vice city will never be beaten. They were the first to have shooting, story missions and, total freedom. Being the first, they were able to get away with having made up cars, though some were comparable to those of today. True Crime: streets of L.A. has the realistic cars along with all of the other concepts. Until the next GTA, this should successfully pass your time. "There will be hell to pay" if you don't enjoy this review!

I have had this game for a few weeks now, after reading some great reviews I bought it, expecting great things. The opposite is true. There are many problems with this game, the terrible camera that doesn't always show you the action, complicated controls - Although these take some getting used to they can be altered. I also had problems with the scenery, to many times I walked through brick walls or found that a bad guy I wanted to arrest had walked through a wall. Several times I also found baddies (and some pedestrians) sticking to cars..
Further bad news is the lack of traffic, pedestrians and... police! this is LA after all. I found I could run over many people and not see a single police car, In fact I've finished the game and I only saw 1 cop car on the streets, and that was chasing some guy who had stolen a bus.
I also think this game is way too short. It took me under 6 hours to get to the end of the game - although I didnt complete all episodes.
Its not all bad though, the soundtrack is great (although the voice acting is awful and very repetitive).
The graphics are ok but no-where near GTA standard.
The good cop bad cop thing, I don't get. I finished the game on -48 bad cop and never once achieved good cop status despite hardly killing anyone for the second half of the game.
Overall I would say Activision have made an ok game without doing anything original. Every part of this game is ripped from some other game or other. Rent this game for 7 days, play 2 hours a day and you will easily complete it, if you can control your boredom.

one of the worst ever

After seeing all the commericals and hype for this game, i expected something way more. This was overall one of the worst games i have ever played. The controls are nearly impossible to remember. The missions are idiotic and pointless. Most take less than a minute to complete while others take u hours to finish. This game is a cheap rip off of GTA 3 and Dead to Rights. The fighting in this game is crap. the driving is stupid. People say that being able to drive all over LA is a good thing, but u get lost so easily and if u try to get back somewhere it takes u forever to figure out where in the hell u are.
Im glad that i rented this game before i bought it.
I do not recommend this game to anyone.

I don't get why all of you people hate this game. If I read all of these reviews before I rented it i would never of even thought about it. And to that guy who said if you can't beat the game in two hours you are an idiot. Well your the idiot. you obviously didn't play the whole game. There are so many levels, it is impossible to beat it in 2 hours. you should check to make sure that you played the whole game, and not just the first branch. there are three branches. the game does get harder closer to the end.

GTA is so much better

If ur looking for a game where you can do anything, or kill anyone this is not the game. Get GTA:Vice City. True Crime is ok though.

True crime isnt one of those games where you act like the james bond character, kangs antics and wisecracks keep the game interesting, it is a must buy, funny as #$^# and entertaining, buy it to see the experience

Rather sloppy, lackluster imitation of GTA/Dead to Rights

Many have written much on this game, so I will try to keep this brief and avoid repeating what's been stated. This game has the right elements for a good game, and even a storyline that's just solid enough to lay the foundation for an interesting game, but Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City, it's not. It's not even on the level of Dead to Rights. Some levels are just plain too short making you feel more like a passenger than the one in charge -- you take down a foe and the game quickly jumps to a long cutscene, making you feel like an observer to the action. It doesn't have the feel, the tension, the sense of inhabiting a real world as you experience playing "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City." It feels too much like a game, and can feel flimsy and flat; it just doesn't have the depth or passion/vision to pull you in. In contrast, GTA feels like an experience.
True Crime doesn't know what it wants to be: or, more accurately, it wants to be GTA but falls far short. Sure, it's good to have lofty ideas, but when you fall short, you usually fall hard. Perhaps, in contrast, that's why Jet Li's "Rise to Honor" succeeds: it may be simple and straightforward and even a throwback to games from the 80s/Nintendo 8-bit era, but it doesn't overstep its bounds and gives you a fun, entertaining game with enough variety levels (some times, you're shooting down enemies stalking an alley, others you're taking down groups of thugs armed with bats/4x4s with your martial arts skills, running away from a helicopter, dodging bullets, hiding behind furniture/cabinets/cubicles as you run from one side of a office building floor to another, fighting a boss in a gas-filled room, or against a boss while your friend is hanging on the edge of a balcony as you fight against time to save your friend, etc. etc.) The makers of True Crime, if they don't improve their execution on their next outing, could learn something from "Rise to Honor," which is a must-have for Jet Li fans and possibly even for older gamers in their late 20s or early 30s.

Max Payne/Dead to Rights/ Grand Theft Auto killer? PLEASE!

Everyone( including me )was thinking that True Crime would crush the afforementioned titles, but they were wrong. DEAD wrong. In attempting to seamlessy blend in elements of Max Payne, Dead to Rights, and Grand Theft Auto, they forgot several things-story, replay value, and controls. The replay value consists of playing as Snoop Dogg. Whoop-de-stinkin-doo. The controls, while aren't the worst kind of controls, they definitely should have been tweaked better to outmatch GTA,MP, or DTR. The driving isn't bad, but it certainly not going to beat Grand Theft Auto. The fighting is very weak, depending on button-mashing more than skill and the moves are extremely slow, unlike Dead to Rights, which requires actual skill. And finally, the shooting. The aiming is cumbersome and will require patience and a keen eye. Plus, it rips off both Dead to Rights and Max Payne with the slow-mo dodge, but fails to outdo either one. Also, is it just me or does every pedestrian fight like they've spent time in a Shaolin temple? Believe me, you'll be in tears when you're getting (...)kicked by winos and Martha Stewarts-lookalikes. The soundtrack is supposedly made up of rap songs. I'm not a big fan of rap or Snoop Dogg. However, only the rock songs are the good songs on here. Now, aside from all the nit-picking I've done, there is some good here. The shooting system allows you to pick up 2 guns at once( for example, you could have an M-16 in one hand and a shotgun in the other ) which is kind of fun. One thing the driving does have on GTA is the ability to aim inside your car, which is neat too. The graphics are pretty good. The voice talent, consisting of Christopher Walken, Michelle Rodriguez and Michael Madsen, is interesting to hear. Unfortunately, the bad outweights the good. If you're smart, you'll either rent True Crime or go and buy Max Payne, Dead to Rights, or GTA. They may be slighty older games, but they're definitely a lot better than True Crime. (...)

People think that this game isn't a GTA killer. Wrong! You can steal cars, shoot civilians, blow up cars, and more. You have unlimited guntime unlike Max Payne and can use it anytime. You can drive cars from little convertibles to huge busses. If you put in a cheat or beat the game you can play as snoop Dogg in his Chevy Impala lorider with hiedrolics(Snoop loves swearing as you probably knew). You can also do street races and earn 4 cars to put in your garage. Ones and old Chevy Impala(no hiedrolics), something that looks like a Shelby cobra, another car that looks like a Dodge viper, and one that looks A LOT like a Ferrari. You can also ride up on 2 wheels, do quick 90 degree turns and many many more driving manuevers. When you hold down the fire button on foot or in a car you can do slow motion shooting for more accurate shots. Parents beware this game has a lot and I mean a lot of bad language [and] if you don't want your child listening to it then dont buy them this game.Which is one of the reasons for being rated M. So when and if you get this game just think of the things the GTA games don't have. Not saying GtA is bad its one of my favorite games. Have fun!
