Another Milestone in Gaming?

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 2

As most of you are aware, the video and PC gaming industry loves to hype games. In the last six years or so the games that got a LOT of attention prior to release include Unreal, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal 2, Black and White, and of course, Doom 3. As you can see from this list, not all of these games lived up to expectations. Considering the tremendous amount of hype that heralded the return of Wolfenstein, does Return to Castle Wolfenstein live up to expectations?

Mostly yes. The graphics in this game are definitely good, and they seem to approach photo-realism in some ways. It helps to run this game with a good video card, and I can tell you that although Return to Castle Wolfenstein was released in 2001, my Radeon 9800 graphics card still strains a bit if I turn all the settings up. The sound, level design, weapons, and enemy AI all are very good too.

Nevertheless, most gamers would agree that this shooter was not the milestone it was expected to be. Some complained that the single-player adventure is mediocre, but I thought it was quite good. I guess there's only so much you can do with a first-person action game, and if the previews in the PC gaming press get too exciting, one should expect a let down.

So should you buy Return to Castle Wolfenstein? If you like playing action games on your PC, then by all means get a copy. At the price, you'll get a really good value because this game is as good or better than many of the newer, more expensive shooters. Moreover, playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein can lend you an idea of how games evolve and how gamers react to them.

simply awesome...a classic

I've beaten Medal of Honor, Soldier of Fortune, Half-life, Opposing force, to name a few, and RTCW is my favorite. It is better than Medal of Honor hands down in my opinion, because the atmosphere, weapons, excellent enemies, and the immersive gameplay are just so much better. The flamethrower alone puts all other flamethrowers in other games to shame. The enemies are downright scary. I dont remember being so immersed in a game since Thief or System Shock II. Nazis and the occult, what more could u ask for? mwahahaha

Very fun

Return to Castle Wolfenstein
by Activision seems to be a follow up to Activision's popular titles. Remember when Resident Evil series came out? Wow. everyone was impressed by the creepy effects. Have you played Metal Gear on Playstation 2? Remember you can blow up the walls. and of course Quake which is a popular game. Anyway this game in my opinion is a mix of Resident evil/ Medal gear on Playstation 2 and Rogue Spear/Quake. Not only is there creepy events in the Game that will make you jump but you also try to get enough ammo to kill enemys. you Waste ammo fast trying to kill fire demons, monsters with shields, and monsters that attack you via evil magic. Not only that but this game reminds me of the Indiana Jones movies. you have to avoid spikes, blade saws, and walls that close automatically. Anyway I don't want to give you all the cool features of this game. you just have to buy this game to see for yourself. Anyway I'm not into games that much but this game and it's features has interested me to the point where I can't stop playing it. Anyway if you like resident evil, rogue spear, quake, etc go ahead and buy this game. it's worth the price. But beware this game is very hard and challenging. However I would not suggest buying this game if your sensitive to blood, gore and violence. Also if you have a condition where you don't like horror effects. then forget about this game. It's to much for you to handle:0). Like I could go on and on about all the cool features of this game but you need to buy it and play it to get the awesome effects of this game. Also this game is a long game.. you beat the first level and you can't wait to see the next level, the levels and weapons get better once you beat each level you find a new weapon of some kind? Also you can find secret areas and find gold, treasure. At the easiest level of difficulty It's still a challenge and will get your mind all confused in this game. Like zombies and enemys raise from the dead and attack you. When you play this game pay attention to details on walls and where your walking, If you don't pay attention to this advice you will be attacked without knowing what attacked you? and how to prevent it from happening again. I'm going to give you some advice for doing well in this game. First of all focus on detail on walls, objects, lockers. statues, etc.. don't get to close to statues:0) and if the area looks creepy and there's no enemys in sight pay attention to walls and get your flame throwers, grenades out so you can destroy a bunch of enemys coming out of coffins, walls, etc. just be aware and don't think you are safe because there's no enemys in view. they creep up on you. This is a game where you have to save your game when your health is full to past this game. so every time you have 100% health save your game. Also I Believe this game will be game of the year! because of it's graphics and the amazing details and effects activision put in this game. this is a personal treasure for those who like violent, scary games. This game is not suitable for those who are sensitive to violence or those under 15 should get parental advisory before buying this game or already into violent games.

I would have given this game 5 stars except for the hassle of getting it to run.

I bought this game, installed it on my 1GHz Athlon system with a 16MB nVidia Vanta card in it. When I started the game, it would complain about OpenGL drivers not being found. So, I went to nVidia's website and got the latest drivers. The game would run until it started to load the first mission, then freeze. I figured a 16meg video card was kind of wimpy, so I went and got an ATI Radeon VE card (it was on sale and has 32megs of DDR ram on it).
Well, the drivers that came with the card did not have OpenGL. I figured I was totally screwed now. However, the ATI website had a 10.6meg file that contained the OpenGL support. I downloaded that and everything finally worked. (aside from an occasional crash when I get killed).
The moral of the story:
Make sure your system is WAY over the specified "minimum" requirements before you buy this game.

Now, is it a good game? Hell yes! It's like you're walking around in a movie. The enemies in singleplayer mode are pretty smart, too. I've been having a lot of fun wandering around shooting up everything in sight. Plus, it's kind of cool to see if you can sneak up on enemy guards. The undead are pretty scary. I haven't yet reached Helga's guards but the other reviewers have got me eager to hurry along now. :-)

Beautiful graphics and atmosphere. I started playing the game on the easiest setting because I wanted to get a feel for the gameplay. It seemed too easy so I switched to the next hardest level and did OK until I got into the catacombs. I got down to two health points and at that level all you're gonna do is die (which I did frequently). So I went back to the beginning and started over at the easiest setting. Let me say that the only difference between the two settings is the amount of ammo and health available. There are just as many enemies and they are just as hard to defeat. The game can be very tough at times.

The game also has some bugs I noticed (at least on my system). On the save game feature I must return to the main menu in order to go to a previously saved game, or strange things happen. For instance, I was in the church battling Helga's elite guards, and those babes are tough. I got to saving the game after killing two so as not to have to repeat it, and after one save the game allowed me to proceed as if invisible to the guards. So I just walked up to each and knifed them one at a time and finished the level that way. There were so many of them I might not have been able to beat them anyhow. They never noticed or hurt me.

Next I went to the level of the demolished church, and the game seemed to take a left turn into the bizarre. There was a giant monster that looked like an ape, along with some kind of flying ghouls which killed me every time (on the easiest setting, remember). Now I am thinking this game is getting a little too weird for my tastes, and I might just give it to the kid across the street, because it seems to be right on target for a fifteen year-old mind.

But I am very impressed with the graphics and the immersive atmosphere. They've done a really good job on that.

I disagree with the other comment about this game. I mean unreal 2 does not come out for a while. This game has better guns and graphics than quake 3 arena. This game is awsome. Just get it.

Agreed - video compatibility issues...dont blow [your money]!

I have a pretty up to date system, but Castle Wolfenstein wouldn't run--video issues. I went to the company's website and this is a known bug.

They suggest several ways of fixing the problem: 1) buying another video card (the list of supported video cards isn't listed on the box I don't think! 2) changing the display of your computer to 640x480 and using 16 bit color 3) editing your configuration files

I hesitate to change my system's parameters for the sake of any game, nevertheless, I did try to change my system to 640x480 and it didn't work. I'm even less likely to go out and purchase another video card--especially when they're giving out three different answers.

[At] the store where I purchased Wolfie...they told me that since the package was opened, they could only exchange the software for the SAME thing. They told me to go to the company that made it for a refund. Looking at the customer support at the back of the manual, they say to go to retail outlet. I called back [the store] and told them that the way I saw it, we had a contract...I gave them money...and in return I got a game. Instead I got a useless CD. Grudgingly, they made an exception and I got a refund.

A day later and my email to the company has gone unanswered...but what did I expect, eh? I think they should have tested this game under more platforms than they did. Also, I bought the game to play--not hack config files. My system uses true color and a higher resolution--I don't know why the game won't play with that.

I recommend that you double, triple check with the company that makes this software for a guarantee that your system will truly run this game--otherwise you might be out [the purchase price]!

I've only played the internet-release test demo (multiplayer only) and I must say this is one the greatest first person shooters I've ever played and I've played a lot. And I'm only speaking of the multiplayer aspect of the game, I imagine that the game itself will comparable only to that of Half-Life and Medal of Honor.

Previous reviewers for the game

I wrote an review about this game previously, but I still do not understand why people try to insult the ID software programmers. First thing I want to mention is that people can choose to dislike the game, I can respect that, because different people have different opinions since this is a free country....brothers & sisters....but I do not respect people who are calling the game is "stupid" or "waste of money" etc..... without a reason and understanding the game's true plot, those comments are not respecting the ID programmers or the gamers community that respect ID software for many years, people really need to try to think about how to provide invaluable feedback. I know people are always comparing RTCW with Medal of Honor or some other games out in the market, but if you think carefully, ID's previous titles are always about shoot and kill and completing objectives and it has been that way for many years... but RTCW is loaded with a whole new story that deals with twisted science created by the Axis during WWII, is just like the movie "Indiana Jones-the lost ark....& the last crusade", something that involves with freaky stuff and twisted science.......maybe I am such a old timer to bring out movies like that.......and Medal of Honor's objectives is to "win the war". As I said earlier in my previous review, both games have different plot. Well anyway....its a disappointment for RTCW's fan to hear that ID decide not to release the expansion pack for RTCW called "enemy territory", they've said the other game developer(business partner) in england cannot meet the deadlines where they are busy with serveral projects in their hands, and the title will never be out on the market with a tight schedule like that, but they have mention the multiplayer maps for "enemy territory" are downloadable as a freeware in their official website.. hmmm..something to play with while you are waiting. I am just like the other ID fans..... looking forward to see that they can wrap up the title in the near future.

Looks Good!
