Nothing new but still fun

There's nothing new in this game but it is still a great deal of fun. Its story is pretty much just filler material with nicely done cutscenes, ignore it and go kill more Nazis. The game play is also extraordinarily average, run here and kill some Nazis, run there and kill more Nazis, but it is still quite fun. The weapons are also average fair, there is the usual assortment of pistols, machine guns, sniper rifles, and what not, though the weapons are rather well done, particularly the flame thrower which has the most realistic looking fire effect I've yet seen in a game.

Though the gameplay and weapons are average, the graphics are stellar and the AI fairly competent. The best thing about the graphics is the assortment of different looking characters you will encounter, there are nearly one hundred and fifty different faces and expressions for the characters and nearly as wide a variety of uniforms and accoutrements as well, this is a nice perk that keeps the game from getting that 'clone army' feel (i.e., all the characters look exactly the same so it feels like you're fighting an army of clones). Also, the AI is quite good, they know how to use their weapons with lethal accuracy (standing far away is no defense if you encounter a guard armed with a rifle) and they don't mindlessly stand around in the open. They will run and duck behind cover or move to sound an alarm and summon reinforcements.

The zombies and other undead that you encounter aren't too tough to defeat (with the exception of the three 'bosses'), just make sure you aim for the head as many of them are armed with a sword and shield and will use the shield to deflect your bullets. Also, these creatures do not randomly pop up in the game, they are only encountered where it seems appropriate. For a portion of the game you are in some crypts that the Nazis are excavating, these crypts are crawling with undead. A short time later you will find yourself in a city, no undead inhabit those areas, just Nazis.

To sum it all up, this game is basically Wolfenstein 3D with much better graphics. The gameplay and story are old rehashes of what has been done countless times before but if you're looking for some good Nazi killing fun this is a great game. If you want something with a good story and innovative gameplay I would recommend No One Lives Forever or Aliens vs. Predator 2.

Take it from someone who isn't all that great at shooters...

This game is amazing. I am not a die-hard game fanatic, but this game could change that. Activision has developed a visually stunning product, using OpenGL/Quake III technology, that will keep you glued to your chair for a couple days (unless you have a job!). Despite a seemingless glut of 3d shooters on the market, this one is worth buying. The game and AI get progressively tougher from start to finish. The only aspect I thought needed help were the cinemas that advance the story line after every few maps. The graphics are chunky and lifeless, nothing like the introduction to the story. Despite that, even someone with limited "skillz" will find themselves playing the game over and over again. The multiplayer mode adds even more fun. It's like the cracker jack prize in the box. I would have to liken it to Team Fortress Classic MOD for Half-Life. Basically, you kill, die and then respawn. Like most online shooters, some maps are awesome and some just plain tedious. All together, this game is definately worth owning.

Forget single player mode

In fact I played about 10 minutes of single player just to get used to the controls and jumped straight into multiplayer and I have to say, WOW! And I'm not just talking about the graphics. Now, although I'm a huge FPS fan, I haven't played them all, so I don't know how many elements may have been borrowed or seen first in other games. That said, I think this game accomplishes a near perfect blend of features and performance that make for an addictive MP gaming experience; well worth the price of admission.

One thing to note though, there is no deathmatch option (unless of course you play 1-1). All MP options are team based, which as it turns out is usually more fun.

Whereas in QII (still one of my favorite FPS) each weapon (except the blaster and submachine gun) had their own advantages and disadvantages that made weapon selection a strategy (and not a game of I'll just use the most powerful weapon on the map), class selection in RTCW is equally important to completing objectives and winning.

Another parallel to I find to QII is chatting. In QII chatting/taunting was as much a part of the game as fragging. In QIII game play was sometimes so fast and furious, you barely had time to say "NS (nice shot)" or "GG (good game)". In RTCW, game play is just as fast and team communication is essential, but instead of having to take your eyes off the battle to read your teammates messages, now you hear them instead. The game has about 40 or so of most important messages built in (like "sniper!", "medic!", "the enemy is weak!" both English and with German accents ) that are at most 4 keystrokes away. Messages can be sent to teammates only, or broadcast out.

Another nice feature over say, Medal of Honor (which is the game to get if you are looking for a great single player experience), is you can team vote to kick a team member that may not be playing by the rules. I don't think it happens that often but it just keeps people honest and keeps the game from bogging down. Since friendly fire is (invariably) part of the game a simple "oops" or "sorry" will suffice to keep you playing.

A unique feature to RTCW (to the best of my knowledge) is the reinforcement queue. When you die instead of immediately respawning you wait in a queue and respawn at regular intervals. As medics can revive fallen compatriots (if they are still in one piece) its often better to just try and call for a medic, although in the queue you can chat, change weapons or your class.

RTCW MP mode is more than just a run and gun affair. It combines strategy and skill (and some luck) to be one of the top MP games around.

An action packed, varied fps, but nothing new

Ever since Return to Castle Wolfenstein was announced, I've been anticipating it more than any other game. Wolfenstein 3D literally created the first person shooter genre, and I was hoping the sequel to it would break boundries and revolutionize the fps realm again.

Well, it didn't.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a great, fast, diverse fps. There are sniping and stealth missions, along with the typical enter-the-facility-and-kill-everyone missions. The variety of play definitely is nice, keeping it from being a Soldier of Fortune where every level is mowing down mindless drones over and over. Even though there are different kinds of playing other than the standard kill-everything missions, we have seen this all before. I think RTCW most wants to be like Monolith's No One Lives Forever; stealth, sniper, and action missions. I basically played this same game last year except it was in the 60's instead of in World War 2.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a really fun game. The multiplayer, although there are only 6 maps, definitely adds to the longevity as well. The only problem with this is one can't help but be dissapointed. There's nothing new here. The 'new' Wolfenstein is just another fun, pretty-looking first person shooter, without any real innovations.

Worth the wait!

I pre-ordered rtcw when I first saw it advertised on Amazon.com (where else?), and it finally arrived. Wow! The graphics and sound are amazing, and it's more fun to play than I can describe here. I have been a Wolfenstein fan since the DOS version of years ago, and this new version delivers all it promised, and more. Even the "easy" skill levels are very challenging. One possible drawback for some users, as mentioned in some other reviews is that it has fairly demanding system requirements, especially in the video area. It also requires 800MB of uncompressed hard disk space. Review the system requirements carefully before breaking the seal on the package. I am running a Pentium II, 400 mhz with Windows Me, 384MB RAM and 64MB nVidia 3d video in 1024x768, and the game performs perfectly. I strongly recommend this game to anyone who likes challenging and violent games.

I am glad I do not have a job.

..........because I would have lost it anyway. I have been playing Wolfenstein more and more each day. This is without a doubt the greatest video game I have ever seen. Everyday I learn a new skill and it helps in the combat scenes. My confidence as a fighter has been growing on each level. There are some very difficult challenges along the way and your enemy becomes more and more adept at pumping lead into you and you begin to love it. Last night I dreamed I had just fragged about ten of Himmler's men and had only 5 health points left and I walked into a room filled with hot meals! If you own a computer that can handle this game get up after you read this and go buy it now!
P.S. If you know of anyone hiring a marksmen mention my name. I have a great reputation at the Castle.

Hours and hours of joy

This is a terrific, spooky game that requires not only a quick trigger-finger but a strategic mind in order to succeed. A lot has been written about the terrific multiplayer option that puts you in an extremely realistic combat setting. The single-player game is just as much fun thanks to the twisted story line that starts off with Himmler's real-life obsession with the occult and magnifies it to the point where reanimated zombies are threatening the world.

The game's best creations by far are the brilliantly rendered female "Elite" troops -- sexy, leather-clad bad girls that move like liquid and have a deady aim. Unfortunately, they are also my only pet peeve about the game: these characters are so great (and cute) you almost wish there was a non-lethal way of defeating them.

Best Ever

This is one of the best games I've ever played in my life. The graphics are extremely good. The AI is very much improved. Unlike the first one where you only had 4 weapons, this one has 9. The game itself takes you all over Europe; to the small towns, to the underground crypt (very cool), to a German runway, and most of all, Castle Wolfenstein. This is an absolute must-have. If you don't buy it, you will never know what you are missing.

The Best Game for the PC I Have Ever Played

I never played Wolfenstein 1 but when I got RTCW the other day and popped into my pc I was nothing short of blown away. This game is pure genious, the developers of this game should get a medal. First of all, this game is extremely fun. Even at parts that are very hard (and let me tell you, there are plenty of those) You just want to keep re-trying and re-trying. The graphics are amazing and smooth. (I have a geforce2 32mb, 1.47 amd athlon, 512 sdram, HP) and there are a few brightness flickers but nothing that's gonna ruin your enjoyment. The gameplay is not only fun as hell but very interesting as you go through Hitler's obsession with the occult.

The only flaw I can find with this game is maybe that it's just too hard, but maybe I just need more practice. You get a great assortment of weapons and sometimes you have to go in blazing and sometimes you have to lurk in the shadows. It's a very well rounded World War II game. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up now. You won't regret it!

Return to Castle Wolfenstein---Is one helluva game!!!

Wolfenstein returnes to the pc like it did almost a decade ago. With all the monsters and shooting away nazis. The graphics are exellent and jeez I was so impressed by the AI its scary. Unlike older first person shooters where they just run up to you like crazy and shoot you up, they actually CARE about their own safty. They will retreat take cover, camp, and they shout orders to their comrades. The level disign is also pretty good (my favorite one is just the first level, castle wolfenstein itself). The levels are pretty diverse. You start the game when you are captured and await execution. Your buddy, agent one is already dead. A guard comes to get you and you come down on him and beat him up. You steal his luger and his knife, shoot everyone, and escape though a cable tram. Fight your way though town and catacombs before you finally defeat the fat beast to get the Dagger of Warding. The levels after that are the Forest Coumpounds, rocket bases, airfields, Secret weapons Facility, X-Lab, War Torn town, and then you return to castle wolfenstine to stop the resurrection of Heinrich I. The character detail is very good but not perfect-if you know what I mean. surely their 3D and detailed, you can see every one of them looks different their not the same looks, you can see the solidier or officers ranking insignia as well as their medals and the seal on their hat. These are textures however and are flat, their not 3D, they are 2D sprites spread across a texture wrapped around the wireframe base models, which are filtered by the graphics card to look smooth, models and textures that can also be affected by lights and shadows like in most 3D games, with the little details. The sound was exellent and if you combine that with Creatives Labs 6.1 sorround sound speakers and my Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card. adding 3D high-quality hardware-accelerated realistic sound, combined with relaxing, but professional music sound tracks, perfect! The explosions go arond the room over your head and BOOM! explodes on to your screen. Some of the bosses in this game are really tough like, strangely however I had no trouble downing the final boss. You can play with up to 64 players in mutiplayer choosing either the Axis german or American Allied forces. unlike single player, you cant kick as a melee weapon resort and the maps are slightly different.
Ups: Great AI, good graphics, fantastic sound, gameplay, and level design.
Downs: Hardly detailed decals on textures, limited multiplayer options, and hard-to-find secrets.
Bottom line: great game with great technology, that I would strongly recommend for FPS fans. Well worth your money and the wait for id to finish this.
If I had to score this game on a scale from 1-100 I would give it a 91/100
