Kiss Your Life Goodbye

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 3

I've had Civ3 for two days and haven't gotten to sleep before 3 a.m. since then. If you are at all interested in strategy gaming, you already know about Sid Meier's string of "Civilization" games - challenging, intelligent, infinitely replayable chances to recreate world history in your own image.

This latest version is, simply put, amazing. Intricate gameplay with splendid graphics and animated units - there is simply no space here to tell you about all the upgrades, but if you're reading this review you've probably been drooling for Civ3 for weeks already, so just go and buy it, but read the following first:

Coming to Civ3 from Alpha Centauri, as I did, has made me notice a couple of things that are missing from the Civ3 controls - things that I miss very much. You can no longer set your military units to Sentry or Patrol an area - you have to move them manually every turn or just set them to Fortify/Hold. Also, there is no way to customize units that are built. Both of these lacks can mean a royal pain in game play.

But other than these couple of minor quibbles, Civ3 is all you want in a strategy game and more. So just buy it and kiss your life goodbye, because you're going to lose interest in everything else but "One more turn...!!"

Haven't been able to get this game to run and no support

The previous version of this game has been my alltime favorite. However, after trying to intall this game for over a month, with no help from tech support, I finally gave up.

The older games still work on my PC, but my advice is save your money and play the older versions. At least you can install and play them.

You gotta get this game! Five million stars, baby!

I've been playing non-stop since I picked up the game on pre-order on Monday. If you like strategy games, you will LOVE Civilization III!

Sure, the graphics and sound are not great, but they're not bad either and they're NOT what this game is about. It's about the GAMEPLAY! This game is about creating and building a country and maintaining it against foes and establishing friendships with other countries. The AI is incredibly more advanced and as a result, the negotiations are so much more FUN than before! Now, I can trade the technology Gunpowder to a neighbor for 10 gold a turn plus an agreement to get horses so I can recruit Knights. I can also capture an ally's city that was taken over by an enemy and give it back to my ally. You can win in many ways-- war, diplomacy, trade, or culture. Also, you can play against up to... get this... 15 (that's right FIFTEEN) AI's, too.

You'll learn a bit of history along the way as well, which is a big bonus. Civilization III is a game that should go down in history as one the greatest computer games ever made. It is a must-have for any game player. This is going to sell millions of copies. I'm buying Infogrames stock now!

Not as good as Civilization II

Civ III is much anticipated and I would say quite disapointing. Civ II had a number of unballanced aspects (howitzers that won ever engagement and railroads that allowed instant transport to name a few). However, it was a good simulation of cultural development. Civ III lacks many of the key technological improvements of Civ II (no rail so you always use the same roads that you built in 3000 BC and no improvments in agriculture) that makes the game less fun. They should have made the game more ballanced but still kept the flow of history that made it great before.

Shabby...Bad Buy

Sorry for the name but it's true.

Okay, first of all it's a really bad buy. ...

It seems to be a great game at first, because you can be so many people. But after a while you start to realize that it's hard to pick which one to be. I've played it over and over and I've won a lot, but the thing that got me really mad was the name of the hardest level-Deity. Okay, so they're not really mentioning their views on religion, but seriously, what if someone wins on Deity? What do they call themselves? God?

Also, their choice of "quotes" weren't good. Unless you're too dumb to look it up.

And, do you seriously think that the Zulus should be in there and not Israel?

Sadly, It's not really my opinion that matters. It's up to you, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Probably the best civ game!!!

Civilation 3 is the best civ game so far. As many people know, the last civ game, Civilization Call to Power was a huge dissapointement. Even though the graphics were improved, the gameplay was dissaproved. The gameplay was trumendously bad. The was because the Sid Meider did not make the game. Sid came back, and made the next civilization.

Civilization 3 is a cross between Civ 2 and Civ: Call to Power. It has the great gameplay of civ 2 and the good graphics of Call to Power. This is why I recommend the game to everyone.

Newbies, if you have no idea what i am talking about, here is a review for Newbies:

Civilization 3 is, i think, the best game to start out with. Civ 3 has some better menu commands, and it comes with a civ dictionary, so u can find out every term that may come to use with you. Don't be scared of the 300 page instruction manual. You don't need it. If you want to read it, it will give you a lot of background knowledge. If not, just play the tutorial. My newbie civ friends learned right away how to play just by doing one or two tutorial games. It's simple and fun!

I RECOMEND CIV 3 FOR EVERYONE!!!

Increased power to graphics slows game play

Not an improvement, only better graphics for Civ3. Civ2 is the best game and plays in a variety of ways. Civ3 has all of the problems and poor performance and slow processing that Alpha Centauri was plagued with. After playing for hours (and having thousands of hours of Civ2 experience) I found I was still struggling in doing basic movements and tasks with Civ3. The manual is very poor in relating the changes for experienced players and does not explain basic differences in concepts with Civ2 in a competent manner. I'm taking the game back for a refund.

This game was good, but not as intricate as civilization 2. It would get five stars if it came with the expantions, but overall it just wasn't worked on enough.

Glacially Slow, plus Abysmal User Interface

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 1 / 5

The user interface to this game renders it almost unusable. For that matter, the game is incredibly slow, at least on a 1Ghz processor. As you progress, the game flashes spastically from one part of the map to another in a clumsy attempt to show you opponents movement. But this is typical of the poorly conceived interface. I guess they must have rushed this out for the holidays. If you are going to spend hours and days doing something, is a coherent user interface too much to ask? The graphics (are aweful) too; very primitive; I expected more.

This was my first experience with Sid Meier's games. He should find a different job, maybe a compost heap or glacier simulation. I found Age of Empires much more usable, and am eagerly awaiting the next version of that this spring.
