I got this game for my birthday last year and I hate it. There are no battles, and all you do is sit there gazing at your city in a bird's eye view. Plus you take turns with your opponent, which is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard of since the making of the computer game Risk. I enjoy all the other cool games like starcraft, warcraft, and ages of empires, but this game is simply stupid. If you are considering making a puchase on it, don't. Youll throw it away once you play it.

I can hardly wait for this game to hit the streets. I became addicted to the original DOS based Civilization back when it first came out. I've lost many a sleepless nights playing that version and all the sequels. Civilization 2 was a huge improvement, and this game promises even more. In my opinion, the secondary games such as Call to Power do not meet the high standards that Sid Meier set out for us with Civilization. Even the alternate versions of Civilization 2 such as Test of Time was not really as good (removed advisors, gameplay tweaks ruined the fun). This game promises to bring back the fire of the original series in the same vein as Civilization 1 and 2. I'm looking forward to losing even more nights of sleep on this game!
Say after me "Medievil: Total War" - No competition!

Am I the only one that thought that Civ3 outright sucked? Civilization and Civ2 were Earth-shattering for me. Then "Call to Power1 & 2" became favorites. Civ3 just seemed like a huge step backwards. Anyway, along comes Medievil: Total War. MTW is actually two games in one. It is a military/dictatorship strategy game on the one hand. Expect intuitive city management and troop creation menus. However, it is also an awesome combat engine. You can lead your troops DURING a battle. You can decide if it makes more since to have your longbowman fight melee style or leave that to your spearmen (which I strongly suggest). Everything about MTW is polished and intuitive. Comparing MTW to Civ3 would be like comparing Halo (the coolest game ever for those of you that haven't played Halo - drop what you are doing and get it) to Quake1 - they are both "first person shooters" but Halo has taken it to a whole new galaxy. Do not waste your hard earned money on Civ3. MTW is an intuitive addictive strategy game that won't let you go.

This is the worst game I have ever purchased! I have been gaming for over 20 years, have the first Civ game...
To play Sid's game you must only do it his way! If you play the game with your own strategy as opposed to one that the programmers thought up and HARDCODED INTO THE game, then you loose. Even at the very simply level you can only do certian things.
Can you envision an enemey army getting into your country and pillaging to their hearts content? One enenmy unit can caputre all the workers & send them home? One pikeman can pillage all the roads... This is beyond bad/stupid.
Did the developers expect you to ring all of your territory with troops so that no one can get in???? Not the brightest rock in the pile.
This game has features that are a result of trying to be different than the last several civ games!!!
IF I could give this game no stars I would.
New and improved - the best one yet.

Civilization III is a must for any fan of the earlier civilization games, and it is a great addition to any gamer's library who is a fan of strategy games. However, be warned: this is not a multiplayer game, you will need the "Play the World" expansion pack to play with someone online(sold separately). Still, I give it an A+.
You'd better learn Civ before trying this one

For the true Civ fan this is the golden fleece. You have to have it. You will remember what it was like to play long hours into the morning. With enough fine tuning that it is really a challenge. The only thing missing is net play. Certainly that will come.
Worth the money. Sequal greatly surpasses the original

A well done, polished turn based strategy games. The game expands well off previous versions of this strategy classic. Granted it does not have multiplayer built in, but previous versions with the exception of Civilization II Gold edition did not have multiplayer either. In addition, the AI is extremely realistic, infinitely better than those found in previous versions. Furthermore, gameplay is simple, yet not dumbed down to the point that it is overly childish or detracts from overall enjoyment or features. This is a must buy for all computer strategy game fanatics.
Not for the SimCity-ite

It seems obvious from some of the reviews here that the reviewers have not really played CivIII. Yes - it's different than CivII and it's harder. The AI is smarter and more aggressive and diplomacy is important. But not win on Chieftan!? Give me a break.
Reccomended but not to those who only build cities ala Sim.
The best turn based strategy game

I bought Civ I and II and played them both to death. Although the idea on Civ III is essentially the same there are enough differences to make this one worth buying. I particularly like the leaders in CivIII, I punched the air first time I got one :-)
In general I like this kind of game so I'm biased, but if you like slowly planning your victory without too much detail then this is a game for you. Also the replayable value is endless.
Better than advertised

I had expected this to be nothing more than an improved-graphics upgrade to Civ 2. I couldn't have been more wrong. The changes that have been made to the game make it much more fun to play than Civ 2 ever was. I love the way cultural improvements effect the cities around your coutry, and the new diplomacy is awesome. I can't understand the reviews calling this buggy; I know there are some issues later in the game, but here's already been a patch released for those, and I had no problem whatsoever getting the game running on a 400Mhz processor with a 4 GB hadrive with Windows ME. If you enjoy turn-based strategy games, there is no better than Civ 3!
