I was hoping that this game would surpass Civ 2 in both enjoyability and replay value. It didn't do either. It was filled with bugs and it got pretty boring after only a couple days. Save your money and buy something else.

THE BEST!

This game is a lot like Civ 1 or 2, but with nicer graphics. The tech tree is done better, but there is a definite lack of naval ability i.e. the techs come far too late, and naval combat is limited to a few ships. Air combat also leaves much to be desired, but ground is wonderful, especially after you learn about horses. I still don't use artillery, but this game offers so many different styles of play. Tip: play on continents or better yet pangea to alliviate naval problems. Don't buy the combo pack "Civilization III Gold Edition" if you think you might buy the "Conquests Expansion Pack." A big bonus is included in both "Play the World."

Not my type of game

A strategy game without decent battles are not my type of fun. Make no mistake, this is a great game, but I rather go for Medieval: Total War.

One of the best Strategy Games to date

Civilization III is perhaps the greatest strategy game to date. Although this version of Civilization III doesn't include the multiplayer additions or expansion maps that Civilization III Complete has, it still is a masterpiece. This version was the first one made in late 2001; it contains the exact same gameplay and features as the newer additions, just excluding the bonus units created in the newer ones. The game is only priced at $0.01 because of the more recent 2004 edition (Civilization III Complete) which includes this exact same game, plus the two expansion disks. Although it's only $0.01, shipping is about $5. The game includes hours of fun and real time strategy that the first 2D Civilization in the early 1990s had, without the complexity that Call to Power had. For anyone who enjoys simulation games such as Sim City with the strategy of Age of Empires and games such as Command and Conquer, this game is a definite must have.

Better feed the kids and the pets before you start

I've been an avid CivII player for about five years. This is definitely better. Other reviewers have dissed the diplomacy screen because they think it's too complicated, but that just means they were too lazy to master it. Trading techs, money, maps, resources, luxuries, and even cities with opponents opens up entire new strategies to pursue.

I'll bet some of the players that liked CivII got their butts kicked when they tried Civ3 because the old strategies don't work. That may be why some of them gave it mediocre ratings. The AI is much smarter, and you'd better get your civilization going well right out of the gate or you'll get stomped.

As for fewer city improvements (cited by a couple of reviewers), there are only a few missing, and the new small wonders make up for their loss. But there are more military units, and better designed.

The bottom line is that if you loved CivII because it was a challenge to develop effective and comprehensive strategies, then you'd better set aside plenty of time, because you're going to need it. You'll probably be up most of the night on your first game. On the other hand, if you used CivII primarily to slug it out in wars with the AI opponents, there are better games to try. The objective in Civ3 is to build a civilization, not be a military commander.

Finally Civilization gives peacefully nations a chance

Civilization is easy to learn but its complexity and levels of difficulty make it impossible to master. This is the best game for gamers who don't necessarily want war games; military strength being just one aspect of controlling a successful civilization. Science, economy, population growth and public opinion are all critical factors as well. I've played each version of this game since the beginning when it didn't even require a mouse. Although Civilization III is not phenomenally better than the last one (Civilization II Gold) it does have several nice upgrades. Improved automation frees players from some of the tedious movements and selections, the graphics are better and some of the Wonders and units have been tweaked to perform better. Neighboring cities often volunteer to join successful civilizations, which makes playing "peacefully" more rewarding. The trade routes are more manageable (a little lews interesting though), and the sea vessels much more varied in this version.

Civilization III does not allow multiplayer play like the last version, (a companion program upgrade coming out before Christmas will though) nor does it have all the different scenarios in Civilization Gold. (I would have liked it to include at least the historical relevant ones, maybe they'll be on the upgrade as well.)

First time Civilization players and occasional players might get a better bargain out of Civilization II Gold, the older model, if they can find it. A typical game is time consuming and can potentially become an obsession. It usually takes me over a week per game when playing a couple hours a day. When you have a large number of active units the game slows down quite a bit.

This game comes with a useful and interesting manual (speaking as someone who really hates reading manuals). If any game could ever be considered educational, this one should be. The standard earth selection and the information provided about World Wonders and military units can be used to illustrate history and geography. There's nothing objectionable for parents or younger players, which is nice. Of course, the main reason to get the game is because it's fun to play.

Alpha Centari by the same designers is another game I recommend. It's similar in format but with a unique premise and different enough to be very interesting.

This Game Will Ruin Your Life

Even more addicting that other Sid Meier games. The interface is cleaner and simpler than earlier titles and the new concepts of culture, especially as it relates to territory, add a great dimension. The game also feels harder to me than Alpha Centauri and Civ II, which makes for a enticing challenge.

Be warned: once you start playing hours of your life will just disappear.
