This game has been over-hyped. It is boring, repetitive, cumbersome and uninvolving.
Basically the game is a very very simple resource management game (imagine The Settlers for 6 year olds) with a stupid (but nicely animiated) creature waddling around in it.
It is also excessively slow when loading or saving - though the much reported patch may address this. You also cannot turn off the annoying cute god/devil characters, and have to go through the long-winded tutorial if you need to restart the game.
What the people who have given this dross 4-5 stars have been playing I do not know. I regret buying the hype and buying the game.
Beware the customer support of this game.

I'm sure you have already heard this many times, but it bears repeating. Black & White was not finished. The edition that was shipped is bug ridden and neutered. While some would simply advise you to wait until the patch is out to purchase this title, I think that misses the point. There has been a disturbing trend among gaming companies to released unfinished products. This has to stop. And we should not support these developers with our dollars.

The hype surrounding this game has been escalating for close to two years, but the premise sounds enticing: you're a god, and you can do anything you want in your little isolated island. From what I've seen, it looks like LionHead Studios has delivered. From picking up cows, throwing boulders at the villagers, training your 'pet', and actually interacting with your worshippers, this game brings a level of interactivity that I have NEVER seen before. You might think this is sort of like Sim City, but you're not even close. You can actually hear your followers talk to you, from complaints to prayers. If people are losing faith, just take your pet out in the village square and start scaring them into believing you. If you're a little less malevolent, use a food miracle to help them out. Another aspect of this game is the good/evil relationship. You can accomplish anything in more than one way: the good way, or the evil way. Each has consequences later in the game. As an added bonus, you've got the best learning AI ever in a game. You pick a pet, who is sort of your representative in the game. He behaves according to your training and behavior. This game requires some pretty hefty specs, and there are bugs(the textures of the people and the buildings get screwed up most of the time on my machine), bu the graphics are spectacular. You can zoom out until the island is in full view, or zoom in on a worshipper chopping wood. A truly groundbreaking, original game. We PC gamers are a lucky bunch.
Buy this game. Now.

You have no choice in the matter. This game ROCKS. Just for the "play god" value alone. You have no idea how much fun it is to be a god. This game offers no benefits for being "good" or "evil" - you decide the right way to go about something. If you think, say, that some people building a boat are getting a bit greedy after they have already gotten food and wood to build it, then destroy their boat! Don't put up with it - you're a god. You can do whatever you want. Being a good god gets boring after a while, anyway..
Enough of my raving about my ego trips.. The graphics in this game are amazing. I have a geForce2 Pro, so most likely that helps.. but even with all detail turned off it's still great-looking. The first time you walk into your temple, turn all the detail settings on - it's incredible. Pools of water reflect everything above them and add ripples - the attention to detail is amazing.
It's a bit buggy at times, such as problems where if you're going through a quest for a sick person, and pick them up and drop them in front of the person looking for them - then pick them back up again (it takes a few seconds to recognize that you completed the Challenge) and the game stops. Doesn't lock up, but the guy's too busy quivering in your hand to talk to her.
Your Creature is also a very nice addition to the game. You can train a creature to be your proxy in the game. It imitates you and learns from you, so if you cast a Miracle enough, it'll learn to cast it as well. It'll use it in certain situations depending on how you used it.
I'd give this game a 5/5 .. the sound is really good, but you can turn it off if you get tired of the "deeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaatttttttthhhhhhh" sound or your villagers begging for more houses.
Over-hyped- NOT fun

This game is NOT fun. The interface is awkward. It is too tedious to move the creature around. I am surprised that all the game sites gave this game a (very) good review. There are a few fun aspects of the game-like when you throw rocks into people's houses and stuff, but overall, the game is very boring. I probably won't play it again.

I had to give the game only one star even though I spent about 30 hours for the first two days I had it (almost failing my midterms). Why only 1 star? I finished four land, the last one is left, but guess what? I just don't feel like playing the game anymore... It became boring and pointless. Probably the latter is even more important. I often like boring games but which have some solid goals. You don't have a goal here: micromanagement was not supposed to be one, creature stuff turns out to be pointless as well. You don't really need to spend much time for your creature to win games. And again, it would be fine it would be just pointless but fun. But it is not fun after all. Eventually everybody gets used to admittedly superb graphic and some creature tricks. Then you see - the game had zero "replayability," zero fun (unless you buy a game to have fun for a couple of days), and zero [intelligent] gameplay. Personally I will get back to the game only if Lionhead will come with a user-friendly map editor and an updated gameplay for skirmish and multiplayer.

Black & White is a game where you have control of everythig, you are the new god for an inocent lad, who don't know about good or evil, you could be a good god, and take care of your people, make miracles of food, water , wood, etc, to make their lifes better, or you can be a evil god, who is hungry of blood, sacrificies, deaths, you choose , everything is up to you. In the game you will see what U are, a good god will have long days and short nights, a white temple, and people who works with love in their hearts, if U are a evil good, your temple will be red, the fear will be everywhere, the nights will be very longs and dark. Even when U are a good you need some asistance, and there is where your creature ( your phisical presence in the land ) takes place, your creature need to learn about good or evil, you can train him to be good or evil , and even you can have a good creature and you be evil :). Just some words of advice, the game need a good 3d cards, and i was reading that this game have problems with the 3D Blaster Banshee from Creative Labs. Now you are ready, go get the game now, you will like it

To put it simply this game is great. Top notch graphics, sound, etc. The controls are very innovative and easy to learn. They can be a little imprecise at times but than again all games have tiny flaws. THE ONE MAJOR DRAWBACK TO THIS GAME is that it is huge. There will be massive slowdown, and bad graphics if you only have a pentium 3 or lower and a video card (not a graphics card). That was my setup when I first got the game. The game was too slow to play. However I purchesed a fairly cheap ... graphics card. This makes the game much faster and better looking. however part of the problem is with older computers the hard drive are simply not fast enough. But if you have a good computer and a very nice graphics card you're gold. The whole world of black and wihte is creative, the way you interact with villagers, the tasks, and especially your creature, who sometimes becomes really disobedient without warning. But these are tiny scratches in this game's otherwise perfect appearence, Get this game! It is one of the most innovative games of our time.

Say goodbye to your family, friends and co-workers. Black and White is about to change computer gaming as we know it. The AI is unbelieveable, the graphics are outstanding, the gameplay is ground breaking and fresh. If you buy one game this year, make sure this is it.

This game is amazing! It is the best game I have played in a long time. I also read that IGN gave it a 9.7 which is the highest rating they have ever given a game. I whole-heartedly support their rating. Buy this game!
