Great game, but not all it could have been

I'm not sure any game ever made could have lived up to the incredible hype piled on Halo 3, and it's worth bearing that in mind when considering the merits of this game. That having been said, Halo 3 doesn't break a whole lot of new ground, and much of the game feels like more of the same, though in this case that 'same' is something very worthwhile. People pick apart and criticize various parts of the game, but many of those same people are online all the time playing this thing like crazy anyway. Here are some things to consider:

THE CAMPAIGN: Okay, so Halo 3's campaign is pretty uninspiring. The graphics are breathtaking at times and there are several moments of lighthearted dialogue (both the marines and the Covenant say some very funny things if you listen closely), but ultimately the campaign is just about shooting and blowing stuff up while you move toward some sort of relatively bland objective. The depth of the campaign leaves much to be desired, no doubt about it.

Still, I love playing the campaign. Why? Simply because there are so many options. First is the option to play 4 player co-op online. You can ratchet the difficulty up and blast your way through, and it's a lot of fun. The game contains several "skulls," which you have to find and which you can activate while playing campaign missions to give your enemy various enhanced abilities (better armor, more grenades, the ability to dodge your grenades, etc). There is also a meta game where you're scored based on the time it takes you to clear the level, how many times you die, and the style with which you dispatch your enemies. Skulls give multipliers to your score, as does turning up the difficulty. There are achievements associated with high meta game scores as well. This, to me at least, gives the campaign some replay value, which is a good thing since the storyline isn't engaging enough to make me want to play through it again alone.

ONLINE MULTIPLAYER: Many people argue this is the true essence of Halo, and in that Halo 3 delivers...well, mostly. The game offers some great multiplayer maps, some fun weapons, great team modes, and the ability to edit maps to your liking through the Forge. You can unlock new armor, customize your appearance, and track your service record as you increase in the game's ranking system. Still, the multiplayer isn't without its drawbacks. It seems strange that ranked Lone Wolf matches have only 5 players, for example, and that most of the team modes in ranked play have 8 players (4 to a side) when the game supports up to 16. These are minor complaints and can be resolved with some time and tweaking, and ultimately the fact remains that multiplayer in Halo 3 is a lot of fun.

Another note--whenever you play Halo 3, be it during campaign or in multiplayer mode, a temporary video of your game is taken, and you can view, edit, and permanently save these videos after your game (otherwise they're deleted). You can also share videos and screenshots of your exploits. Nice touch.

Overall I think Halo 3 is a great game. Is it monumental? Maybe not, but it should have some great staying power and be a lot of fun to play for some time. While I can understand the complaints people make about the game I don't think it's enough to ruin the Halo experience. If your only desire is to play the campaign on single player I'd recommend renting this one before you buy it, but if you want Halo for any sort of multiplayer action I'd say this one is worth owning.

Game Lacks Meaningful Story

Your character is built like a tank, accordingly, skill and strategy are not a game play requirement. Without having played Halo, and Halo 2 I have found the story line a little confusing. The game has good graphics, however, the adversaries in the game are a little bizarre. A lot of time an energy went into making the game graphically appealing, however, the storyline is lacking. The story becomes so disconnected from any contemporary context (or meaningful view of the future), that really in the end there is nothing more to gain from the game then shotting some strange little alien monsters with purple blood.

A Wothy End to a Groundbreaking Series

If you haven't heard, Halo 3, arguably one of the most important game-releases to date has arrived. Returning with Halo 3 is more of the same, which is in no way a bad thing. Anyone who has played either of the first two games will feel immediately at home with the control setups, visual style, and overall presentation to the game. Everything you'd expect from a major release title like this is in tact: beautiful, immersive environments that will leave you breathless, amazing sound effects, and game play that will always bring you back for more. Depending on what your forte is there are many things to do in Halo 3. If single player is what your interested in you'll find plenty of adventure (and challenge) in the campaign mode. It offers four difficulties, legendary being the most difficult, but all of them will leave you feeling satisfied once it's all over. Enemy AI is solid in all four variations. Aside from the Grunts (the lowest form of baddie) no enemy is an easy kill. Even the most seasoned Halo veteran will find it hard to overcome some of the impossible odds that will challenge their skills in Legendary mode. The campaign, which lasts around 15-20 hours, will provide you with enough "Oh **** moments to keep you coming back for more even after you've beaten it.

In addition to the normal campaign mode theres an added 'Online Campaign' feature where you and (up to) three others can take on the epic story-mode. This adds a competitive feel to the standard game with scores and medals for accuracy, kills, and detractions for death.

If you're a multi-player aficionado then online mode is where you will feel home. There are an assortment of games to play; everything from Capture the Flag to territories is available to choose from if you so please. If you're someone who doesn't like those kind of games, there's the more classical 'Whoever kills the most wins' type of match. These are all available to play with either teams or independently through the use of Xbox's live matchmaking system which ranks you with players of your skill level based on previous games.

This brings about one of the games downfalls: the online community. The online scene is littered with pre/post pubescent whiners that curse, drop racial slurs, and do nothing but talk trash the entire duration of any lobby moments. Sometimes you'll be lucky enough to get one on your team and if you're doing poorly, they'll surely let you know. While this may seem a little harsh and more of a chance encounter, once you arrive online you'll find out that 90% of your games will be with or against players like this. Sometimes it's funny, but if you're someone who just wants to enjoy themselves then it's an extremely unneeded hindrance from enjoyable gaming. Gameplay aside there's a lot of customization to be done. First and foremost you'll want to decide whether or not you want to be a Spartan or Covenant Elite. Then you'll want to pick your unlockable armor types and customize your own personal emblem. Through the use of the games 'Forge' editor you can make some serious modifications to any of your favorite maps, then invite your friends to play on them with you. If that wasn't enough you can use the games 'Theater' to view previous games from anyones perspective with fully rotational cameras capable of taking screenshots that can be sent to your computer. It's an unneeded one, but a very nice touch nonetheless.

Minor griping about the length of the game aside, Halo 3 comes out on top in terms of enjoyment and replay values. There are so many things to do once you load up the game you will have a tough time deciding where to even begin. That's an amazing thing to come across in todays games where you usually just goto one point, then to another. A game with this much depth brings a lot to the table right off the bat. With promises from Bungie with more to come in the future in the form of online updates and added content, theres no reason to miss this years biggest game and the ending to one of this generations most successful franchises.

Great Game a little short

The original Halo sold me on Xbox and the sequels have not let me down. I've had great fun with all 3 games. I'm not the least interested in online play, so my only real complaint is that the story mode on Halo 3 seemed a bit short, just like Halo 2, so a 4 star rating. That being said, great game, get it, you won't be dissapointed.

Halo 2 diehard angry about Halo3 - Joseph Staten your fired!

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 0 / 0

I must have beaten Halo 2 on legendary mode over 20 times. I was totally addicted. When I found out I could rent the game days before I could get my pre-ordered copy I couldn't wait so I rented it. After I beat the game on Saturday, I called and canceled my order. Yes, I was really that disappointed. I'm not sure if Bungie was forced to rush out the game or what but it was not as good as I was expecting. Maybe I expected too much but it should be better than the previous but then again consider movie sequels. There are cool things in 3 don't get me wrong. My disappointment was as such that I canceled my pre-order. I'll keep my favorite, Halo 2.

My Complaints:

1) The sword swing is much slower than in Halo 2 which means you have to time it better for that weapon to work. What the * ....Swing damn it!

2) What in the world did you do to the Grunt's voice? Give him helium? I see that Joseph Staten did some voice overs in 3 but maybe Brian Posehn should have done it in Halo3 like he did in Halo2. I expected more.

3) There are to many disruptions in the game from Cortana and Gravemind tapping into Master Chief's helmet. When that happens you can't do anything but let the video play. About 3 less interuptions would have been nice.

4) The story line itself just can't compare to Halo 2. Story writers, your fired.

5) I swear there was also more verbal interaction with team members in Halo 2.

6) Just about all of the levels you play in Halo 2 are better in story and game play except for on one level; You get to pulverise 2 Scarabs and the preview you've seen since day 1 on the Ark doing its thing. Rippin off a gun turret from its mount is cool too. Wish I thought of that. Oh wait I did. I wanted to do it in Halo 2 but as hard as I tried.... Nope. Maybe a hack in the PC version but I have Xbox360.

7) Did you really have to bring back the race to the finish line from Halo 1 that occurs at the end of the game? Who the * thought that was a good idea? You're fired.

8) Missing huge battles and cool music. Remember in Halo 2 when you start to walk into a large room and Cortona says you may want to sit this one out? There was a huge battle sequence between the Brutes and the Elites and the music was awesome and really gets your heart pumping. Halo 3 seems to be missing those battle scenes.

9) I beat the game in 6 hours and it costs about $65. I'm glad I rented it before its release and canceled my pre-order. Really disappointing. Total let down. I feel cheated and rippeed off.

Dear Bungie, I saw all of your video clips on game play, many previews including the commercial from the football game last year and exclusive interviews with the developers on the web and you gave a lot of hype. My expectations grew as I watched the new clips that were released. Joseph Staten I'm holding you responsible.

P.S. You're fired.

It's well....ok

I'm sorry I do enjoy shooters and I have bought all of the Halo games....but I need something more. New Shooters now are way beyond Halo 3. The graphics are better, the story is better, the AI is better, the games mechanics are better, and the online multi-player is BETTER!!! Come on...no new maps only refurbished old ones...it's like halo 2 but just better graphics. If I want to play Halo 2 I'd just play it. The only thing this has is the ability to take a guest online with you but those other...BETTER games are catching up to that one. I really expected more from the great Halo name. But when is comes down to it who really freaking cares.

If you want this game wait a year it'll reach Platinum status and you can buy it for $20...hype sells all.

Plagued by Disc Read Errors

I am on my third copy of Halo 3 Standard edition, all of which randomly give me Disc Read Errors. So far I have been completely unable to progress past the Cortana stage. My last attempt to replace the disc through Amazon resulted in this reply..

"Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com.

I'm sorry to hear that you experienced the same problem with your replacement shipment.

As it seems that the problem with this item is more widespread than we originally thought, we are not able to send another replacement.

We will gladly refund you in full for the return of this item. If the item was part of a set, please return the entire set."

Save your money until Microsoft has figured this issue out.

Go out and buy this game now!!! That is if you want to play the same boring style single player missions that the previous Halo releases offered as well. Other than better graphics this game is a pitiful excuse of a shooter. The only good in Halo titles is the fact that every kids mommy buys it for him for christmas/birthday, which means more online players. Other than that, Unreal 3 (or any unreal for that matter) is worlds better than these titles. They offer more characters, better weapons, more manuverability, comparable graphics, and tons more unlockables. So if you are a die hard Halo fan, by all means waste your money on this game, however if you are in for some balls to the wall, blood filled FPS action, please do me a favor and support Epic games. Buy Unreal 3!!!

very good

This game is amazing. With Xbox Live it adds to the whole experience. I give Halo 3 five stars and two thumbs up!
