Stunning...Absolute Perfection in the FPS genre

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

I have been a gamer since the late 80's and have played many games spanning all different kinds of genres. This is without a doubt thy best gaming experience I've ever had. Everything about this game is amazing. Graphics, story, sound, gameplay, etc.. I'm almost done and it surely will be a sad day when I complete it because I really don't want this experience to end. I'm enjoying it that much. The last game that I would rate perfect would have been the first Half Life when it was released back in the 90's. Since then it was hard to find a gaming experience that title had to offer. That wait has ended with Bioshock. The team members who developed this game are truly talented and the only thing i'm hoping for is either a sequel or another FPS title from this company. You owe it to yourself as a gamer to play this title. It truly is one of the great games of our time.

Superb storytelling makes the game

Bioshock is a compelling story that happens to be packaged as a game. It's also an homage to Ayn Rand unless I'm a complete fool. Bioshock is set in an undersea city called Rapture. Without giving away a lot of spoilers I'll cover the good and the bad.

The good: storytelling, storytelling, storytelling. Every bad feature in the game was completely overwhelmed by my need to find out what would happen next. The diaries scattered throughout the game (which are left by residents of Rapture now mostly deceased) really added to the overall immersion.

The bad: predictable monsters.

Bioshock isn't really about your mad skillz with hand/eye coordination. It's not about not dying. It's all about the vision of one man who built a city under the sea - a utopia that has gone mad. This game is GREAT because it makes you really want to explore Rapture and find out what is around the next corner. You will almost certainly not be bored with what you find.

Bioshock? Where did this game come from?

Man I am blown away by this game. It is clever creepy and well thought out. It has great visuals and really a one of a kind game. The person though this game has a wild imagination. Must own for 360 owners.

Hello, I have not really played this yet. I have to beat Darkness first. But, I just wanted to say. This is the best looking game I have ever seen. I have all the systems except ps3 and psp. (I tried the psp and I did not like it.) But not only are the graphics AMAZING. The controls are great and you just feel good when you wacking a crazy lady with a stick. The voice acting is top notch. Also the fact that it is only single player makes me feel good. Why are all games trying so hard for multiplayer. Sometimes when playing a game. I like to tuck myself into my favorite chair, get a drink and possibly some chips and have fun solo. Thank you 2k games for making a game that finally makes me understand all the hype about "next gen." My hats to you Sirs. The cool thing is, I'm only 22. So here's to 60 plus more years of amazing games. Wow I wonder what people will be playing when I'm like 62. I just blew my mind.

Technically brilliant, depressingly creepy

I really tried to like this game, but I couldn't get past the first few hours. It gets great reviews for its technical and "story" achievements but I wish all those magnificent skillz had been applied to something less ugly (artfully ugly, but still dog ugly).
I kept feeling like a serial killer while shooting, clubbing, and burning very realistic looking men, women and children who left behind realistic looking twitching corpses. Call me soft, but I don't enjoy creeping through a duct to find a lonely woman listening to a melancholic radio song, and clubbing her to death with a wrench.
There is no way you can feel like the good guy in this scenario. Not even if you refrain from harvesting the little sisters.
If you like horror porn movies like "Saw", this is probably your cup of tea. If you flip channels when they air trailers for such movies, don't buy this game. It'll make you sick. I hope this counter balances all the wild enthusiasm and provides some needed caution.

Let's not get carried away here

Yes, this game is immersive (it does take place under water after all); yes, the story is more complex than some; yes, the overall conceit (an Objectivist culture gone mad--madder?--under water) is nice. But let's be honest: the graphics are not up to the standards of, say, Gears (the plant life for instance, is blocky and primitive; and some of the vaunted water effects seem slapdash); and certainly it is easier to set a graphical mood in these unremittingly dark corridors than it is in a more well-lit world (take it outside and let's see how a landscape is presented). The gameplay, while complex for an FPS really is RPG-lite; and anyone who has played Deus Ex: Invisible War will recognize Bioshock's obvious anxiety of influence. I also think the "save" system--you get cloned, rather than die; your opponent's health, on the other hand, deteriorates---marks an ominous turn in gaming towards ease of play: the game is simply too easy and an easy game is not really a game at all (beating Ninja Gaiden on Very Hard, now that's an achievement; managing to shock two hapless psychos who conveniently stand in water is something my Granny, bless her, can do). I wonder if the acclaim this game is receiving has anything do with the industry's lamentable habit of starving gamers in the summer: anything is going to look good after one of the bleakest summers on record (Vampire Rain, anyone?).

Let's wait for Halo 3, Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed before we start talking about the game of the year.

This is a great game. One very DEEP game. 2K put alot of effort and thought into Bio-Shock and it shows. Shadowing is amazing, weapons are balanced and the plasmids are just plain fun! Hopefully there will be some downloadable content cause I want some more action in Rapture.

Best 360 Game Overall

There aren't many games like this out there, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. Easily one of the most entertaining games possibly ever, and definitely the best 360 game to date. The unnerving story, excellent graphics, creepy sounds and voices, and spot on controls will have you staying up into the early hours of the morning. You won't be able to get enough. This is not just any first person shooter riding the coattails of its predecessors. This is a reinvention, a welcome breath of fresh air for the genre that few other games can come close to matching. Leagues better than both of the Halo games, and the depth, story, sound, and arsenal that is literally at your fingertips, puts Gears of War to shame.

Might get knocked for not having a multiplayer option, but there is none needed. You won't want anybody spoiling your quest through Rapture, and there are plenty of enemies to test you.

The implementation of plasmids and tonics, which you obtain through genetic modifications, is simply brilliant. You'll need as many as you can get your hands on to survive the journey through the underwater city. These combined with the looting for weapons, money, and other items give this game a quasi-RPG feel to it, but not enough to ward off those who aren't interested in RPGs. The action is fast and constant, with several tasks requiring quick wits and knowledge of exactly what your plasmids can be used for.

Surprises await you around every corner in this one. Take the time to enjoy it...one like it might not be released for a very long time.

I picked up BioShock yesterday after work, and couldn't put it down until midnight. The story is really fun and engaging, and it made me want to call in sick today just to play more! I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys quality games with excellent story lines.

This is the reason you bought an XBOX 360

Amazing game. Everything about this game will have you absolutely hooked from the start. First, the graphics are amazing. The water looks 100% real, the lighting and shadowing effects are top-notch, and the colors are vivid. Everything just looks so detailed. My only graphical complaint is that the "splicers" aren't quite as detailed as I expected, but they still look pretty good. Plus, they're moving around so fast that you don't really notice. The pacing is really great. The weapons feel good, and the plasmids feel very powerful. This game is also very suspenseful and sometimes downright scary. You never know what's waiting for you around the next corner. There are dead corpses everywhere for you to search if you need ammo, EVE hypos, money, etc. There are vending machines scattered throughout the game that allow you to buy more items. This game really encourages you to explore, as there are lots of cool hidden areas and items. All in all, this is truly a next-generation game and it really shows what the 360 is capable of. It also happens to be one of the deepest and most engaging games that I've played in years. I remember feeling like this the first time I played the original Halo, and I have been waiting a long time for a game to come along that would give me that same feeling of awe. I can't help but applaud 2K for a job well done. The only thing they could improve for BioShock 2 is to add multiplayer, but even without it this is still an amazing effort that you won't want to put down. Game of the Year so far and an absolute masterpiece. If you own a 360 and don't play this game, you are an idiot. This game is the reason you payed $400-plus for the system, folks.
