I think first and foremost people have to remember one thing about both Doom3 and Half Life 2....NEITHER ARE OUT. So to base a review on Alpha releases and movies that were not up to date is just silly.
I have seen all of HL2's movies and have played the Doom3 Alpha just as many people have, but the fact is much of both games is changed since those were releases/leaked. The alhpa is basically no more than an old tech demo, and a good portion of the HL2 movies contained place holder art and sounds...in other words don't judge a game by it's OLD cover.
I think it would be a safer bet to assume things based on the past rather than on Alphas and videos. If things follow the past, then it will be a safe bet to assume that Doom3 with have the better graphics, while HL2 with have the better interactivity and game immersion.
After that a lot of it's going to be in the eye of the beholder. For ME, I think graphics can only go so far and after the newness wears off you see what's underneath. If what's underneath doesn't shine bright, then the game will not be great for too long.
I will buy both games for sure, but I am looking forward to Half Life 2. It "seems" to have more of everything I would want. The graphics are good, not Doom3 good, but pretty close. But it's the other parts of the game which are important for me. The characters and the interactivity and the story. We only have the one game to look back on from VALVe...Half life....but it was a great game and their eye for detail seems to be showing through once again. Time will tell though if HL2 recaptures any of that greatness.
As for Doom3 ...well...prior track records from its creator, id, shows great graphics engines by John Carmack, but almost nothing "new" or innovative after that. Doom/Wolfenstein were new and great, but Quake was basically a "prettier" version of them. Quake 2 was a "prettier" version of Quake 1. Q3A was a "prettier" version of those, but that didn't even have a single player games (other than bots)! Since Doom and Wolf, to me, all of the games have gone downhill other than graphics. And none of them have had a great story other than go in and kill everything that moves. I know this is something that appeals to a lot of players, for me it becomes very boring if that's all there is.
Another aspect which catches my eye: John Carmack has already stated Doom3 will not be very long, while Gabe Newell has stated Half Life 2 will be as long or longer than the orignal Half life (which was pretty darn long to start with). And Multiplayer is still up in the air with both, but it appears Doom3 will SHIP initially with only a 4 player multiplayer, while Half life 2 will be 32+. On top of that HL2 will have Team Fortress 2 (to be talked about after Half life 2 ships according to Gabe Newell), as well as Counter strike 2 no doubt soon to follow, and a ton of things from the Mod community. Doom3 quite frankly, doesn't have a quarter of the kind of mod support the Half Life community has.
So, bottom line, we don't know what each game will bring...we know bits and pieces of the present, and we know the how the past went for each game, so it's going to be in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I think unless Half Life 2 drops the ball completely that it's going to be "the" game to play over the next couple years.
WEAK difficulty method of blindness

This had the potential to be a fair to good game, but the software engineers decided the way to increase difficulty is to blind you. Now, let's be fair. You can make ANY game hard by blinding the player. It's a weak, pathetic substitution for difficulty. It deprives you of the visual fun of a strange world, which makes me suspicious that the 'strange world' is probably not there. The way to cover up lame stunts in an action movie is to shake the camera, add loud noise and in other ways distract you from the action. This is the WHOLE story in DOOM 3. Give this weak-kneed, pathetic follow-up a pass. Save your money. It's crap.
Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

The greatest! Words cannot describe how good this is. Oh, wait, this hasn't come out yet. Maybe I should stop wasting everyone's time with a review for a game I've never played. :(
The Worthiest of Successors to DOOM

I'll put this simply and bluntly: this game is the perfect successor to the original Doom, or more specifically, to Episodes 1 and 2 of Doom. It almost perfectly recreates the same feeling of dread, adrenaline, and horror that made the original so great. It is NOT a successor to Half-Life, Quake, Serious Sam, or any of the other popular FPS game that came out after Doom.
The graphics perfectly suit the atmosphere: cramped, claustrophobic, and unpredictable. For all those who are complaining about the lack of open spaces and the darkness: have all of you forgotten Doom 1 Episodes 1 and 2? I was 10 when I first played Doom back in 1993, and I sure remember it. It was dark, it was cramped, and there were monsters around every corner. Several times I got so scared that I ran out of the room. DOOM 3 recreates that perfectly. You begin to play more cautiously because you are so scared, which only adds to the sense of total immersion the game creates.
Sure, you can get Painkiller (another great game by the way), and blast hundreds of demons with overpowered weapons, but these kills have no consequence. In Doom 3, the enemies are so hard (I am playing on the hardest difficulty), that you will sigh with relief and feel lucky to be alive with every kill. I find myself ducking around corners, hiding under desks to ambush demons, and dashing behind walls to dodge fireballs. The weapons you have are powerful, but fair: a zombie will take several pistol shots to the chest before he goes down. Likewise, a few good bites from a Pinky demon will take you down fast. This is not one of those games where you can soak up tons of damage and move on. Every shot you make counts, and every hit you take hurts.
If you are like me and still frame Doom 1 in your mind as the first and ultimate FPS, you will love this game. It takes you right back to 1993, but with the graphics and ammenities to boot. If you are looking for a more realistic experience a la Far Cry, wait for Half - Life 2. For now, I am going back to Mars to take on the legions of Hell.

I was all excited to get this game as I played the originals and they were great. My computer is the latest pentium 4 with all of the extras and runs the game fine-BUT-I don't understand the GREAT GRAPHICS that is touted for this game unless you are a mole.Dark, dark and more dark.Crank up the brightness and you have dark with washed out dark.I can play this game for about 5 minutes and then -boring-time to crank up Call of Duty or Medal of Honor.Don't waste your money on this, the makers of the game didn't say "turn off your lites and crank up the sound" when you play it for nothing.
Dull, not scary, does not deliver

UPDATE: Found a code to fix the darkness:
ctrl+alt+~ brings down the console
type r_gamma # (0-2) to change the brightness
I set mine to r_gamma 2 and it finally made the game playable.
I own an Alienware Area51. 3.4 Ghz P4, 1GB Ram, ATI Radeon X800 Pro (which runs Far Cry like a dream!). The fact that I have a speed machine did not make the game any more fun. Yeah, it was smooth, but still, NO FUN.
And the sound is not impressive. All the weapons sound weak.
Better games are out there.... (Far Cry!)
Original:
I own it. I've been playing it for two days now and I am highly dissappointed.
The game is too dark (pitch black) in most places, which does not enhance the creepy settings, but makes the game annoying. I'm sure they did a fantastic job with the graphics, but how are we supposed to know - you can't see 3/4 of it!
The shotgun is too slow.
The pistol is a popgun.
The chaingun... blah.
The assault rifle sounds like an air rifle.
Overall, the fun factor is missing completely.
If you want to creep around in the dark, go play Thief: Deadly Shadows, or break out your old copy of AVP or AVP2.

Anyone who think this game is the best ever must:
a) Go for graphics more than content - looks good I'll admit, but the game play in the original Doom is better and more addictive than this and that was how many years ago?! They hope you'll go for image over atual content and, boy, does it seem to be working
b) Enjoy anything with "Doom" in the title - if this heap couldn't rely on the Doom legacy, does anyone really believe it would sell?
c) Enjoy waiting for a long time before anything happens - first person shooter? More like a first person hiking trip (with your Grandma)
d) Be unable to handle anything that requires actual thought - I know it's (supposed to be) a FPS, but am I the only one who gets real bored real quick with this type of completely linear gameplay?
e) Work for the distributer or be related to the makers
Don't waste your money like I did. Find an old copy of one of the first 2 Doom games and play until a decent sequel arrives.

I was really excited... I even bought a new PCIe based system and the ATI X800. The game looks great but after an hour into the game... its just the same thing over and over and over and over. A guy always jumps out of a corner..you walk into a room.. the lights go out. There is no game play here. MultiPlayer bites.. it is SOO SOOO SOOO not worth the $$$ Far Cry is so much better.
Doom but with better graphics.

I was excited to buy this game. I was hoping for Doom but with better graphics. Then I brought it home and installed it. I realized that I was hoping for more than Doom with better graphics... The gameplay is a little frustrating since gaming has evolved since the original Doom, but the creators of DOOM 3 seem to have forgotten this. It is a straight walkthrough game no real variety, it's DO THIS then DO THAT then DO THIS. I mean, just make a movie if that's what you want to do. Give us a little freedom to go about things in our own way. The graphics are incredible, probably even great if your computer still has that "Just paid $4000 for a new computer" smell. But the hardware demands this game places in no way are paid off by the gameplay itself. It reminds me of Doom in that I wanted so desperately to play this game that I shelled out the $1200 for a brand new 486 so it could run it well. Only to play it for a few weeks and get sick of it. Seriously... The best advice I can give is this. Find someone who has the game, and see if they'll let you come over and play if for a few hours. IF you're hooked go buy it. I wish I had thought of that, cause I'd naver have dropped the $50.
