Sometimes fun but usually dark, monotonous, repetitive, and frustrating

I've read through some of the other reviews and most of the criticisms are spot-on. The graphics are amazing but the whole game is so dark that you can only play it at night or in a darkened room. The flashlight is just plain annoying--if you had to use it just every once in a great while (and there are very few pitch-black rooms in the game; a few more would have made it more interesting) it would have been much better. Yes, the dim lighting, yes, the endless hallways, yes, the elevators, yes, the PDA's, yes the monster-on-the-other-side-of-the-door or popping out of a hidden panel in the wall, yes the goodies-hidden-under-the-stairs--they all get just so repetitive that it all gets a bit predictable and boring.
Paradoxically, the game is both too hard and too easy. The hard part is that the monsters are all so fast, and so mean, and so relentless, and they NEVER run out of ammo or have to reload, that you will not make it through most levels without getting killed. You absolutely need the autosave and quicksave, or you wouldn't get anywhere. And that's where the too-easy part comes in: you can save the game at any point along the way, and replay each battle over and over, trying different strategies and different weapons, until you figure out the best way to kill each monster with the smallest loss of health or weaponry.
Fortunately there are some really interesting levels and some truly fun monsters. Unfortunately the really good monsters--especially the mancubi and the Guardian of Hell, which I may have liked simply because I didn't see them over, and over, and over--are, again, just so fast and so powerful and so unrelenting that it's impossible to defeat them without immediately getting killed yourself and having to replay the battle over, and over, and over... that it finally just gets frustrating and tiring. (And I REALLY didn't like the baby-like "cherubs". Shooting them was the only part of the game that truly disturbed me.)
Oddly enough, I discovered that once I had the BFG and the soulcube, the rest of the game was a piece of cake up until the very last battle. And again, I'm resigned to the fact that I'll have to play that battle over and over, just to be finished with the damned thing.
Finally, some philosophical points: what are all those monsters DOING? How did the imp get behind that wall panel, and has he been waiting there for me all that time? Do they get bored? And why do they all seem to be hoarding armor, ammo, and medkits? I know, it's just a game, but these monsters seem to spend a lot of their time hiding--maybe they should have been given something to be hiding FROM, and I don't mean me. And another thing: why are all the zombies men but all the lost souls seemingly female, when there were apparently so few women in the base?

Good game, still same old Doom, blood and gore shoot'em up action. Graphics are beyond amazing. Installation problems, and some in game bugs keep this from getting a great review. Other then that this game is still a must have!
Looks very good

This game looks extremely nice. Its geared towards the Single player more than past ID games have been. But dont let the other fool on here cry and moan about how much hardware you need to buy to play this game, just check out hardocp.com for the DOOM 3 benchmarks, straight from ID software on the current top of the line cards, as well as the radeon 9800 series and nvidia 5950 series card. This game supposedly will play extremely well on your system, barring minimum requirements, which according to ID software can run on even Geforce 3 cards, and Athlon 1.5 mhz cpu's fairly well. Carmack has catered as much as possible to those with older systems and a lower budget. He even stated that those with Overclocked cards might see a performance hit due to the way processes are handled. THis game looks sweet, but not so much for those multiplayer gamers like myself. However it has been a long time coming, and I for one will gladly pick up DOOM 3 before HL2, after all, who do you trust, proven benchmarks on an unfinished game, or the people who are so pathetic at computer security they allowed their source code to be stolen.
My money is on ID software, their track record is legendary, while Valve cant even protect their own computers, much less do anything other than what CAPCOM does, keep spewing the same game over and over and over again with nifty new names. This game will smoke on most systems, but those of us who pay to be on the top of the food chain hardware wise, are the true gamers, and we are the ones to profit the most from the new game engine in terms of gameplay. Everyone else is just a wannabe.
Great game but requires the best PC to run

I am excited about this game but when i got it today I barely could run on my P4 1.5 ghz. Turns out you have to have a hella fast computer and top of the line video card to run this game. I just don't have that kind of money to upgrade. Don't waste your money on this game if you don't have the hardware.
a bit disappointing....almost lame

I just bought this game, yes it has been out a couple of years, but ya know, lol.
I am a fan of the original doom but I got to agree on major issues with this game.
The engine is fantastic, in fact id say its almost all engine, the storyline is terrible and redundant, science experiment gone wrong opens portal to hell. yeah basically the same idea as the first two games but doom is a rare game that has evolved past a storyline. However, I am one of those who appreciate a deep storyline.
Most enjoy this series for a wide range of levels, demons, and hokey stuff thrown in. I havent found much of that....
My biggest complaints are it is so damn dark I cant see what Im shooting at, and you have to walk around with a flashlight all the time which is a major drag. Even with the flashlight I cant see who is shooting at me or where its coming from until they are on top of you. Even with cheats etc, I cant get the lighting sufficient to where I can be comfortable and see...
I suppose this is the point of this game, the darkness creeps you out I guess. personally I think its lame and shows a real lack of creativity.
The monsters, in the original game I loved spotting the rare and unique mosters....the cyber demon of course was my all time favorite from the original doom series.
So far all I see is a re-hash of all the same old bad guys....no new ones....I suppose it is interesting to see the new and improved badies yet I cant help but feel disappointed by the lack of new enemies.
the weapons are major disappointment, since all you get is once again is old but improved weapons. MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT!
on a side note, the BFG and plasma are kind of cool especially the BFG.
However the only new weapon is the soul cube. and its lame.
Overall, this game isnt what I thought it was going to be and is strongly in my lame meter.
I bought this game because its been at least a year or more since a new decent title has appeared on the PC and sadly lucasarts appears to be carrying the load.
Im glad I only paid $20 for the game or id feel seriously ripped off.
Hopefully someone will make a decent game with its engine, which is the only positive thing i can say about this game.
What Junk!

Okay, the graphics are good -- what little you can see. The damn game is TOO dark! Pitch black dark! The game should be shadowy, spooky, but not pitch black where I can't enjoy the graphics!
The game play is dull, dull, dull. The way the monsters just sort of dissolve in a lame bloody mess when you destroy them. This doesn't compare to the awesomeness of Soldier of Fortune 2 when you kill an opponent. All you do is run around, shoot something, get health kits, ammo, armor, that's it. And find a key and switch or hidden passage or two.
The plot is a rip off of the movie Total Recall -- a decent homage to a good film -- but trite nonetheless. The game makes no sense in many parts. You can shoot someone in the foot with a pistol once and they fly across the room like a pinball bouncing off bumpers.
Too dark, too dull, not much fun. What a waste. We waited all this time for this?

I am faily new to PC games having been a dedicated console gamer for the last 15 years; just built 3 gaming machines 1-P4 3.2ghz and 2- P4 3ghz with ATI 9800 video cards etc (like to have lan parties nightly with my son and his friends.) Doom frame rates ok at high quality on 1024 X 768; occasionally slows down when you pan fast, but really dissapointed in the game plot, darkness and unimpressive endless hallways. When compared to FarCry the game really lacks:
1. Smart AI for bad guys,
2. Movable objects that you can blow up,
3. Open areas with lots of guys to kill,
4. Ammunition (always in short supply),
5. Scare factor (zero after first couple of Zombies magically appear),
6. Great humvees and boats to drive around while shooting.
But it is not all negative; they did get the 5.1 surround sound right so that the sound moves around you as you turn. This just is not enough to make it worth 50 bucks to anyone but dedicated Doom players.
Save your money on this one; get Farcry and/or UT2004; both excellant games with good replay value via lan or single player. Lets just hope that Half Life 2 lives up to it name since Doom 3 sure did not.

Make no mistake, Doom 3 is a shooter. You run around and shoot things, go to a new area and shoot more things.
What other reviewers don't mention is that this game has ATMOSPHERE. Turn the sound loud, set up a 5.1 surround system if you can; the audio in this game is unbelievable. The bass made my house vibrate. Zombies and imps will creep up behind you and attack, making you jump out of your skin. Distant sounds, screams, the hums of machinery, all make you seem like your hearing things, until something jumps out and starts wailing on you. The shotgun sergeants will run up to you, mumbling incoherently, before opening fire. All this intentionally done to scare the living daylights out of you.
The visuals are amazing as all reviews have indicated, so I don't need to add anything here.
Doom 3 is what id wanted Doom to be in 1993. However, VGA and 320x200 just doesn't scare you like Doom 3 does.

This game is the most atrocious piece of garbage that I've played since, well, I guess I can't remember a game as bad as this. The graphics, although impressive, can never be seen as the majority of the game is spent navigating tight corridors with a flashlight. The gameplay is terrible, as the 'surprise' attacks are as predictable as a Leprechaun film. Furthermore, the game only achieves a decent framerate on the most advanced system - if you bought your computer less than two months ago just give up now. I played it on a 3.5Ghz intel HT and still had to turn all the display options to the lowest setting.
It's amazing that games this bad are even published given the enormous list of superb FPS available (i.e. Halo, Half-life, and Serious Sam).

Soooo disappointing. Over 10 years to get here from Doom 1? Same weapons (but more boring), virtually the same monsters. For sure, the AI is much better, and there is better level planning so there's less wandering around trying to find the next action step (but not none). However, that's about it.
The point of Doom is playability, and FUN. Prettier monsters do not equal fun.
While getting disoriented after each blow may be more realistic, its annoying and not fun. Let's not forget -- if complete realism were achieved, the game would suck as much as actually getting trapped in a Mars base with all hell breaking loose (i.e., no fun). Plus, the computer inherently limits your scope of vision. So, its annoying (and almost insulting in some strange way) to have to get all dizzy and discombobulated because the nerdy software geeks think its "cool" to be more "realistic." (It kinda feels like being lectured on "what it would really be like" to get smacked). Of course, if it were realistic, it would be a lot easier to time the throwing of grenades, and they wouldn't hit the closing door so damn often. Also, in real life, I have a little something called "peripheral vision." Plus, I rarely get caught up and stuck passing too close to the scenery.
I have only played the single player version so far, but at this point I would like my money back. Please tell me the multiplayer is that much better so its worth something.
