More of the same....

While the first Knights of the Old republic kept me interested, this one seemed to fall short of my expectations. This game used almost the exact same formula as the previous. The same basic game mechanics are there, you run around and make decisions that guide you to either the Light or the Dark side of the force, and your team is influenced by your alignment. Different options are available based on these decisions and how you build your character up. It took almost half the game for the story line to peak to a point where I was able to keep my interest. I played as a Jedi throughout, and for me the ending was incredibly disappointing. The end villain was long-winded and boring in their final speech. While the ending leaves the series open to a third installment, I'm not sure I would really care if one was made after this one. If your a die hard Star Wars fan or a really big fan of the first KOTOR, then I would recommend you look into this one, otherwise I would say skip it.

Better gameplay, disappointing storyline

Having loved the first game, I was tremendously excited to play the sequel, though expecting it to never be able to live up to the original. Therefore, I was happily surprised to find the game play and all the little nuances better than the original (and the references to the prequel and its characters very entertaining), but as the game went on I found myself more and more confused on the storyline. There were too many people to try to gain influence with, no underlying storyline that wasn't disjointed (with scenes thrown in amongst many other stories), and I was SO disappointed when I reached the end (today), and it just stopped, leaving so many hanging subplots and storylines. Apparently the game developers thought that having the final enemy telling the distant futures of all the allies was sufficient enough to leave you wondering what happened in the immediate future, but it was just a disappointment. Someone else has said in their review that the best part of the original game was the storyline, and all the wonderful subplots, and they're correct, and that's where this game falls amazingly short of the original.
Bottom line: play it for the fantastic game play, but don't worry about trying to get too close or involved with the other characters.

Game Has Huge Freeze Problems

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 4

Beware if you purchase this game - myself, along with numerous others, have had problems with the game freezing up without warning at various times. All you have to do is go to a search engine, type in "KOTOR II" and "freeze" and about 20 sites will appear referencing complaints.

Also, for anyone that played the first version of this game, this is basically the same thing with a new story. Very little has been added to the actual gameplay, although over the course of 3 years you'd expect more improvement. Overall its a below average effort.

The Sith Lords is my game of the year and now my favorite Xbox game. The original Kotor is still a favorite of mine. If you can relate, even a little...just go out and buy this game.

The ONLY things that are not great about this game are technical issues. I've experianced frequent framrate issues during the game along with some freezing during saving and a damaged save. If anyone has a problem with this game other than tech issues, they probably are just not fans of the source material.

Pros
+ Fantastic story
+ new item and upgrade system allows you to sell or breakdown items to build new upgrades such as lightsaber lenses, vibrosword grips, grenades, stims, etc.
+ sound is even better than the original
+ new lightsaber moves and "forms"
+ overall gameplay has been upgraded substantially from original game

+/- dialog loops can help some people understand or decide how they want to end a conversation. Sometimes it can be plain annoying and take away from immersive feeling you get while playing this game

Cons
- frequent framrate problems, "lagging"
- some freezing during loads

Not as much fun as the first time

I find myself playing this game less and less.
I loved the first game and played it all the way through (a rare oddity for me) and did so as quickly as my schedule allows. I didn't play another game while playing KOTOR.
The sequel starts out with a boring quest and is not near as drawing or of course original as the last. I expected to play this game nonstop like the first, it's definitely a dissapointment.
I recommend purchasers wait another year so the original is out of their minds. Maybe then they can enjoy the sequel as by then it may feel like a change of pace.

Can't compare with the first

I'm sure Obsidian put a ton of time into this title, but apparently not enough. Sure, they had a lot to live up to, but it's a shame the title couldn't stay with the original company. The engine is familiar and just fine. The graphics are about on a par with KOTOR I. It as annoying, though, that when you change armor on some of the characters, it doesn't change their appearance. There are a variety of other bugs, storylines that lead nowhere, tedious, unnecessary, and at times odd dialogue options, an uneven and at times uninteresting story (far less engaging than the first game), plotlines that are not picked up, love interest subplots that aren't fleshed out, and a lame ending in which one of the characters, whose reliability is suspect at this point, gives a rundown in dialogue of what happens to the rest of your crew. Some visuals there would have been nice, but at this point, the disappointment is piled high enough, it really doesn't matter. The obvious foes look cool, but their characters aren't fleshed out half as much as it would take to make them interesting. Some of the early interludes provide a sense of foreboding, which never plays out. The voice talent ranges from fair to poor, with some of the actors sounding like OC cast members that wandered into the Star Wars universe by accident. I kind of enjoyed some of the easy parts, thinking it would be a kind of calm before the storm, but the storm never came. Way to many kinks to be ironed out in this one. Remember the cool little surprises like dressing up as a Tusken Raider? Nothing like that here. They slightly tweaked the pazaak and swoop races, but if you've got a bad script, those technical details won't matter much (something Lucas himself seems to have forgotten in the new trilogy). It's not a horrible game, and fun in parts, but mostly just running off the fumes of the first. Here's hoping Bioware comes back to helm Knights of the Old Republic III.

KOTOR2 is a great rpg but lacks in some areas

KOTOR was one of the best rpgs ever made. With the release of KOTOR2: Sith Lords, Obsidian tried to recreate the magic that Bioware had created with the original. This is where they succeeded on some things but failed miserably on others. For one, the epic storyline from the first game was better fleshed out and was just better overall. After playing through this game, it took me roughly 33-35 hours to complete, i was disappointed not only with the ending but with the dumb mistakes the story writers and programers made. Play it through on light side and you will see what i mean (and darkside to some extent), which brings me to my other big complaint that playing through as a darkside character really doesnt change much this time around. The first game really felt like the decisions you made effected everything and made the game seem different, but KOTOR2 does a poor job of this and just seems rushed. The graphical improvements are laughable as it is clear that they just used the work bioware had done and created a storyline from that. All of that being said, the game was still great fun. While the storyline lacked and at the end a few things made no sense, it kept me interested and playing throughout. There really arent many rpgs on the xbox and there are even fewer playable ones, so that takes kotor2 from a lackluster sequel to a must play for rpg fans and xbox owners. The addition of the influence system (which you can either embrace or ignore altogether) was a decent addition although i had hoped it would effect the overall storyline a bit more. The new force powers are cool but playing through with the lightside with a jedi guardian, i only used force push, heal, and destroy droid. The stances might as well have been nonexistent as well. KOTOR2 is a fun game and would be a great addition to any xbox owners library but i cant help but feel that if bioware would have made the game the quality would have been much higher.

very fun, but not the best story-line...

KOTOR II has tons of action and adventure!

The game let's you explore parts of many planets(One of my favorite features), but not very much of the planets...
You also explore a few ships in the game.

The game starts you off with an optional level.
You play as a droid that's trying to fix the ship enough so it cn land on the Peragus mining faculty. But, as I said, that level is optional... I would have to recomoend skiping it... It's rather boring... The most fun I got out of that level was the part where it teaches you to fight by shooting some mines.

The next level allows your self-made character to roam about Peragus...
You meet your first two party characters there. Atton, a man who has many simillarities to Han Solo, and Kreia, an old woman who, I think, used to be Bastilla...Not sure though... I do know that she was a Sith Lord, Darth Tyrana, or something...

Anyway...

After you get of Peragus,
The real fun starts!
Your character finds out that he/she is the only known Jedi left... Even though he/she was exiled many years before, following Revan to war... Taht means that the Sith want you dead, and who knows what the Republic wants with you?!?

Throughout the game, you meet other charaters...

Mira, a bounty hunter-chick with a big hairy wookie (Hannhar)on her back, trying to kill her.

Disciple, a former Jedi, who innoyed me very much... My friends and I called him Prince charming everytime we saw him... He looks and sounds just like Charming from Shrek II...!

Bao-Dur, A Zabrak who used to serve your character in the Mandalorian wars... He calls your charater General... He also has a robotic arm that's good for opening force feilds... And he has a little droid that looks like a tinny floating mine!

Visas, a Sith-apprentice who, after you deafet her, surrenders and begs you to kill her... Kreia doesnt like her very much...
You let her live, and she'll tell you of her people... But not much of her master, who wants to kill you...

GO-TO, a very powerful man who joins your team trasnsmitting his voice through a droid... He says that if you don't help save the Republic, he'll blow the droid up... He says that the droids bomb is large enough to whipe-out you, your friends, and half of the planet your on...

Mandalore, the leader of the Mandalorians... I think he used to be Canderous...Kreia seemed to be hinting that at the end...
He is a very powerful character to have! The only catch is that you have to go to all the planets looking for stray Mandalorians...

I read somewhere that if you play a guy, Dicsiple doesn't join your party, but a girl called Handmaiden does instead...

I think that's all the characters...

Anyways...

The game is fairly good...
But, it doesnt stand up to KOTOR I...
I would recomend buying it!
It's a great game, really!

Cheer up!

Yes, this game does have some issues. I for one was dissapointed at first. I mean how does a game that got perfect ratings from every thing that reviewed it(KOTOR 1) produce a sequal like this? From what I hear though is that obsidian was rushed in it's development of KOTOR 2 which is the reason for all the plot holes and bad ending.
This game is an extremely fun game. New feats, and new force powers make you want more. If you don't pay any attention to the story then you will love this game...which would be difficult. It still does have bad graphics and a few system flaws, but these are not all thar bad.
This is my review short and to the point. The only reason I think this game got a 3 and a half review is becuase it is completely overshadowed by KOTOR 1 which got everything right. I have faith in obsidian for another one!

Light or Dark???

This is the best Star Wars game ever! First off, don't let anybody tell
you the secrets of the game. You don't want it's excellent plot spoiled.
I have almost beaten the game and I beat KOTOR several times over. I favor the light side, but after all the suggestions to play it both ways,
I would have 2 profiles, one light and one dark. Being either light or dark side, there are many different variations to the game. Also, the names of the characters and planets sound like George Lucas approved them. The game developers did a good job of making each planet unique. With quite a few new additions since the first one, such as influencing your party members, having lots more control over the storyline and characters, class mastery and secret force powers, this game is a big improvement over the first one.

The graphics are more more vivid and realistic than KOTOR and include characteristic details, but some portraits are used lots more than once, but not for party members.

Aside from the big plot, I find most side quests to be worthwile. Often, side quests earn you valuble items. There are more items in this second game than the first one. You'll probably end up with more items than you can use, so I suggest selling some. (but not lightsaber parts-you can never have too many lightsabers!) This is one of those games that is awesome once you get into it, but it takes a long time to get into the main plot. Even if you are new to RPG's, this game is suitable because it builds in difficulty. Overall, this game ranks 10 out of 10 stars!
