Battlefield 2 Low Down

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 15 / 15
Date: April 26, 2006
Author: Amazon User

A candid game that I must admit has excellent online play that can equally compete with the grand daddy of FPS's on PC; Counterstrike. It even does a nice job at going head to head with Halo 2 but it still has some things to be desired.

PRO's

+Fantastic Graphics
+Good Controls
+Diverse Campaign mode
+Thrilling Online play
+Easy to learn controls

CON's

-Not many game variants availible online
-Varying load times that can take quite awhile
-Uneven teams constantly
-Daunting maps that give one side the leading edge
-Vehicle controls are clunky
-Air vehicles control difficultly and near impossible to destroy online.

battlefield 2 Modern Combat is a fantastic fps! The AI is decent not the best but it is still good. The graphics well let's just say that i felt the bullet go into me by a sniper. though some levels are very frustrating. The level design is great you really feel like your there. The ranking system is also very rewarding. So you don't feel unrecognized after a mission. There are plenty of vehicles tanks, jeeps, helicopter ect. The multiplayer is great! BattleField 2 Modern Combat is a great military shooter and a must buy for a 360 owner.

Enough action to make your jaw drop

Battlefield 2 is an intense action game that is different everytime you play it. Trust me, every time you play this game online you will see things that will make your eyes bug out of their skull. The action is so fast and furious on occasion that it might be a bit much for the faint of heart. You'll jump out of helicopters high in the sky just as they are blown up by ground to air missiles. You will narrowly avoid enemy airstrikes that obliterate everything and evereyone at your base. Bodies fly through the air and smack up against the side of a building like rag dolls after getting shelled at close range by a tank. Jeeps will run over mines and blast apart in the air, flying right over you.

And that's not even scratching the surface of the scenarios that you will witness. I think that's the one thing about this game that makes it a worthy purchase. You won't get bored playing with 23 other people online, that's for sure. When the bodies start flying, you'll be laughing hysterically.

The single player campaign is kind of ho-hum and not really all that engaging. The graphics are fantastic, even if you're not playing on an HD setup. There's a level called "The Black Gold" which is absolutely stunning in how beautiful the graphics are and could very well be the best looking level in the game. The sound in this game is pretty intense. When you have tanks blasting away, choppers firing from all directions, explosions everywhere and constant gunfire going on all at once, it can be overwhelming but still loads of fun.

The server reliability is a little bit sketchy for online play and I have been dropped from a few rooms on a couple of occasions. Sometimes, I haven't been able to log on at all but that's a very rare thing. Also, it's true about two levels in the game being overselected by players (you can vote for whatever level you'd like to play next in between rounds and the popular vote usually goes for either "Bridge Too Far" or "Backstab") but there are ways around it like selecting levels through the pre-game filter.

Last but not least, the achievement points in this game take some work to obtain. No free ride getting those I can assure you but the challenge is worth it.

Awesome FPS

This game is awesome! The story mode is better than the PC version but it isn't as good as GRAW. The graphics are awesome and much better than the drab graphics of the previous console versions. Enviroments provide the right atmosphere for each mission. Character models look great. One of the best features of this game is on previous consoles , which is the swap with other characters feature which doesn't make the game extremely hard. Using vehicles isn't hard at all, just move the analog stick and there you go. Some missions can be hard, but no matter how hard they are there is definetly a way to get past it, for example the third mission where you are a sniper, you have to snipe every living thing and i'm definetly not the best sniper, so this mission was hard for me but I beat it. This game truly redefines the genre of FPS and is one of the best shooters on Xbox360.

Demo represents the game pretty well, actually

I believe most of the reviews here have already said what needs to be said about this game. I'm only adding my $0.02 because there is a lot of false information in one of the reviews. You don't have to like the game, in the least, but you should really learn more about the game before slamming it prematurely.

Yeah, BridgeTooFar and Backstab are popular maps. And while their intense popularity has declined since BF2's X360 launch, you will still run into those 2 maps more than most others.... unless you use the server filters EA provides in the game and just completely avoid those maps. You can select any gametype and map you want to play in BF2. Select CTF or Conquest mode, select the map you want to play, filter, select a server from the search results and go. And if you never want to play the same map twice in a row, just select a server with "all maps" as the map rotation method and not "vote". Each and every game session will load up a new map and no one can vote for a specific map. And if the rotation comes around to a map you just can't stand playing, just hop out, search again, and join another session. It's just that easy.

When you first start playing BF2 online, you are *not* playing against everyone else. You cannot play against those who has significantly ranked up until you rank up yourself. You start off playing against those at lower ranks and you will even be blocked from joining sessions your friends are in if they are ranked higher and you're just starting out. This will keep you from playing against those who have had the game for many months ahead of you. And that's just the ranked servers. You can ALWAYS play on an non-ranked server. Those servers are for folks just starting out, those who don't care about ranking up and just want to have fun, and anyone needing a break from the ranked servers. Sure, you could run into a person here or there who has been playing for a lot longer than you on an unranked server, but most folks on those servers are laid back and/or new to the game. Either way, the game is fun and you're definitely not thrown to the wolves as soon as you get online.

I would also like to throw in that my friends and I playing BF2 online have wives, children, and responsible jobs. Anyone who thinks that only those with gaming skills are unloved, pasty basement-dwellers is just looking for an excuse to explain away why they suck at online games. Just play the game and relax. You can go for more competition on the ranked servers or chill on the non-ranked. You can charge toward the enemy full on, hang back and snipe, protect a flag, ride around in a Hummer, man the 120mm gun in a tank, etc. BF2 will allow you to play how you want. Protecting flags and sniping can get you just as many points as taking on the other team head on. And if you're playing on a non-ranked server, you probably won't care about points, anyway (not to mention the fact that the ranked servers make it very easy to rank up for the first 4-5 ranks).

I have had 3 or 4 disconnects while playing BF2 on the 360, but that has been over many months now and I'm used to that happening much more often in online PC games. I personally don't mind the infrequent disconnects when considering that BF2 for the 360 is the smoothest shooter I have ever played online (PC, Xbox, or 360). Very rarely do I see lag and even then, it's usually only for a second. I've seen massive lag kill many an online game, shooter or MMORPG, and BF2 looks and runs like a champ on the 360. If you're having major lag issues with this game, you need to talk to your ISP (and make sure your router is Xbox Live compatible- you can find a full list of XBL compatible routers at xbox.com). I play with guys all over the country and I've never heard anyone complain about frequent lag or disconnects in BF2.

The campaign is not much more than training for the online game. It will give you missions that force you to use all of the various weapons and vehicles. This is one of the best ways to learn how to master BF2. I played the campaign for a few missions to get used to the controls and then jumped online. That worked out pretty well. Then you can go back to the campaign when you need a break from the online game and learn new tricks (the campaign is a good place to learn how to fly the helicopters in BF2, for example). As far as not respawning, you don't need to. When you get killed in the offline game, you just switch to the closest soldier on your team. If you're wounded, you can heal up or just manually switch to another soldier using the "hot swap" feature, only available in the offline game (you just point to another soldier and hit the Y button). Again, that easy. The offline game is really only difficult when you get to the last mission. That one was somewhat brutal, but I did a happy dance for a few minutes when I finally beat it, so it was definitely rewarding (and you'll get a decent chunk of achievement points).

If you throw your sucker in the dirt every time someone shoots you online, maybe you should avoid BF2. Otherwise, BF2 is a very fun, addicting game that has something for (almost) everyone. You can make the game difficult and frustrating if you want, or you can be smart about it and enjoy all the game has to offer.

Review of Demo Only

I played the demo of this available on the marketplace all weekend. I thought it was cool, but deleted it. Then I found myself thinking about it all day and just redownloaded it again even though I have GRAW. I have to say that this game is better than GRAW at least the demo is. The map is as large, but it is more realistic with much more variety. I got so tired of GRAWs maps so quickly--mostly because the strategy is the same on all of them. At least with HALO 2 you could use different strats on different maps.

The ability to use different vehicles including parachuting out of the helicopter is awesome, because as a sniper you can get in some extremely covert places and just
take people out all over the map from one place (i.e. in the demo owning the roof on the 12 story building is crucial for at least 2 "territories" locations and helps with all of them).

I'm not a big fan of the movement while running yet, but it isn't real bad, just more inertia than I'm used to with games like GRAW and Halo.

Also, the graphics at least in the demo are good, better a little than with GRAW. However, from a long way off, you can see that when someone is running, it looks more like they are just scooting along without their legs moving. Although that probably helps with lag, esp when there is 24 players on at a time, it looks pretty stupid.

Last, it says in the description above that 64 people can play a map at once. Not according to the official website. With the PC version, yes 64 can play, but on Xbox Live only 24. still that beats any game to date.

I think I'll buy this one based on the demo.

Good game but, missing essential parts

Positive Aspects of the Game:

-The graphics are pretty good considering this is almost a year old now. Many were saying that the visuals on the 360 were not really up to par for the hardware installed. They were right to a certain extent, but that is because the developers hadn't much experience with the system yet. It was also one of the earlier FPS for the 360. What I consider realism is how light and the reflection of that light is portrayed in the game among the detail of the surroundings. Weapons seem to have the most detail of anything in the game.
-A new feature at least to me is the ability to actually switch "bodies" from one person to another such as an assault trooper or an engineer. This is also what happens when that particular soldier is killed, but can be done manually while still alive.
-Controls are not terribly complicated and make it pretty easy to get used to the interface.
-You are able to crouch and lie flat on the ground to avoid incoming fire.
-A variety of weapons makes for an amazing experience which never seems to bore. There are sub machine guns, regular machine guns, pistols, rockets, knives, sniper rifles, mines and a slew of others. Some weapons are not just for killing, but for misdirection and/or hitting the enemy before they get to you. The thing that really keeps your weapon choice new and exciting is that there are five different versions of each weapon set. There is assault, sniper, engineer, special ops.
-The game is full of action. You are in a constant firefight against enemy forces and will hardly ever find yourself getting bored. It seems that this was a main concern for the developers.
-Just as with the weapons there are a considerable number of different vehicles--(multiple types of helicopters, a fighter jet, hummer, armored dune buggy, several tanks and even regular drivable cars and trucks) The control on these takes a little more to master than just moving your character around however.
-My favorite part of the game and the redeeming quality which takes this good FPS and makes it great is the online multiplayer games. The best part is the fact that people can join games while they are already in progress with up to 12 people on both teams. There are ranked and unranked games so you can decide how serious you want your opponents to be. Maps are enormous. I can't think of any other way to describe them. An average map is probably a few square miles if scaled. This, in my opinion is ideal if you are a sniper and need places to hide. The maps are also extremely complex and have a considerable amount of topography which also makes for a better game. The most common type of game played is conquest which is akin to Star Wars Battlefront. There are bases in which you have to defend or overtake and once all are taken and held one team gains a victory or the time runs out.
-After a few bullet you die (between 5-10) or one with a sniper rifle. This is a good middle ground between a halo multiplayer where it is an almost cartoonish dozens of bullets before death and a Tom Clancy game where it is 2 or less.
-I purchased mine for under $20 and it is hard to beat the value on this game as of now.

Negative Aspects:

-Most of the game takes place in a wintery snow covered area of Kazakstan, which just gets kind of monotonous. Some of the levels seem like just repeats of earlier levels with different buildings.
-There should also be however a difficulty setting to be able to be adjusted so you can at least get through the game.
-Secondly some of the controls are very counter-intuitive: the jump button is the left bumper. Granted you don't do a whole lot of jumping anytime in the game, but when you do it takes a few times before you remember you have to move your finger up there to bounce. To change weapons you use the right bumper + left joystick which is just plain stupid. You have to hold the right bumper and then a graphic showing the weapons and then with the joystick you select the weapon. It is not only difficult, but there is a much easier way this could have been achieved. Simply use the D-pad as the weapon selector. It would be much quicker and infinitely more obvious to the gamer.
-The huge downside to online multiplayer is that you CANNOT have guests on xbox live. In other words you cannot play with your friends in the same room like on other xbox live games. They have to have their own xbox 360, battlefield 2 game and an xbox live subscription. It looks to me like Microsoft got greedy here and really ruined part of the game for me. The respawn time is a standard 14 seconds as well.
-The radar is essentially useless at close range. Zooming in and out never really helps; normally if there is an enemy within the area of the radar that isn't a large vehicle you're probably already dead if you're looking at it to find the miniscule red dot. I walked up on a person who was sniping and killed him while he was laying flat on the ground--I was 10 feet away. It is also too complex to be a radar anyways. It looks more like a 2-D topographical map and just becomes cluttered very easily.
-A small problem I have with the game is the fact that there is no run and no melee attack. I can understand not being able to run, because you are most likely laden with 40 to 80 pounds of armor and weapons. However not being able to melee is annoying in multiplayer. For example, when you are close to a person and run out of bullets right when you are in the middle of a firefight, shouldn't you be able to hit the person with the end of the weapon? Personally I think what happened is there were already too many controls on the pad. In the single player game-not a big deal, for multiplayer-it is a serious setback.
-Gameplay while very action-packed can get tiresome, especially if you are re-attempting a level multiple times. More importantly I just don't have the desire to get to the next level because of this. You'll get much more value out of the multiplayer game. This said, it is a very good game, but just not enthralling to me. Computer teammates have a hard time doing anything other than dying and no you can't call for backup even when everyone is dead. The game developers determined when and where you'd need reinforcements.

one reviewer stated that this game is a complete waist of money, WRONG. This game is everything but horrible. The graphics are outstanding-bugs are fixed from x box version-gameplay is somewhat a challenge and the controlles are easy to remember- online play is very decent, but can be improved.

But their are some flaws(the planes)
the planes are imposible to drive, unless you play the same stage over and over-planes are hard to distroy unless you have a rpg or tank shell wich still really doesn't help because you miss more than 1/3 of the time. other wise this game is a great shooter, and strategy game. YOU MUST CONSIDER BUYING THIS GAME.

I highly recommend this game to all that love great shooters like halo-1,2, call of duty 2, and counterstrike.

First off, I got SOOO hooked on this game when Microsoft offered it as a demo on the 360 a few months back. I see way more positives of this game than negatives, but the negatives add up. I think that talking to other players is a necessity with this type of game, and I was psyched to be able to participate in team action - but upon further play, I realized that the online 'chat' or voice feature is flawed and hardly ever works. Especially after the June update for the game -- which will be the LAST update for the game. EA is still charging 59.99 for this game, and when I inquired with EA about the flaws, they directed me to the forums where I read that the developer bailed on this game and will not offer any sort of support after June.... Are you loco? A game that's STILL on the shelves for SIXTY DOLLARS won't be offered future support?? Can You say RIP OFF???!!! Like I first said, this game is way too addictive, but I feel torn between loving the all-out barrage of armament and sick HD graphics and all of these server issues EA is having. Would it be so hard for EA to hand the job over to Microsoft or another company??? I can tell You that players out here are all talking about it(when i can hear them). Especially the Clan teams that rely on the online functions LIKE TALKING!!! I played a clan game for five minutes the other day until I realized that I couldn't talk with the team, then I was gone---- I'm no expert at the game, but I can tell You that a lot of real gamers that dished out the four bills plus 60 for the game are going to be writing way longer ramnling reviews than this one!!! lol! But seriously, come on EA don't provoke a boycott, the baseball gamers have already complained enough about not seeing a 2006 MVP release--- Thanks for the forum to air these things out!!!

Must Have FPS for multiplayer

First off if you even remotely like FPS and have xbox live dont ask just buy. Imagine running around as either SF or combat engineer, sniper, Assault soldier or as a medic, and being able to jump into any vehicle with a team mate and handing it to the 12 others on the opposite team. Youre a sniper you jump into the blackhawk with 3 others your pilot buddy hovers over a high rise building you jump out and airborne onto the top and start having fun, a enemy helo blows three of your buddies up that were riding in a hummv so you whip out your laser guider and lock in on the helo and blow him out of the sky. Just a taste of the fun chaos that is possible with the game. throw in a free download that adds snowmobiles and more maps and your on your way to lots of hours of battlefield madness. The only flaw is when you kill someone the screen zooms in and shows your position ie if your a sniper it will zoom in the building where you shot from, which sucks for the player who likes to be sneaky and go through a lot of trouble to get a good spot, the campaign is good with a nice ranking system similiar to the online one. If youre married dont get it cause you might start negliting the significant other and end up with some divorce papers, remember its all about willpower.
