Delta Force: Black Hawk Down

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 6 / 6

"Delta Force: Black Hawk Down" is what you get if you take "Medal of Honor: Allied Assault" and set it in 1993 Somalia, but it's not quite as good as that may sound, thanks to some annoying flaws in the game's design. Does that mean it's not a good game? Not by a long shot - it's an enjoyable first person shooter, and rises above some of the mediocre genre efforts that have been released within the past few months (see "Unreal II: The Awakening," for example). The game may not live up to its potential, but it's a solid effort that's worth a look.

If you watched Ridley Scott's fantastic film, "Black Hawk Down," then you already know the historical premise for this computer game adaptation (although most of the game details missions prior to the events of the movie). Mission after mission, you'll find yourself battling militants in shanty African cities and towns, completing a series of objectives before you are permitted to advance to the next level, or couple of levels, as not all missions must be played in sequence, refreshingly enough. You will also get to pick which weapons you take into said mission prior to play, which is nice - although you'll find yourself sticking to your favorite set of weapons and rarely using the others that are offered. When all of this is done, you enter the midst of combat, and then the action begins.

You will rarely go it alone in "Black Hawk Down," but don't expect a lot of help, even so. Your squad mates are little more than set decoration, and while they do add to the sense that you are but one soldier in a large campaign, they are usually no help at all in firefights. They shoot at their enemies, sure, but they almost always miss. At least their senseless behavior won't get in your way most of the time, since they depend upon you, and, thankfully, you can pretty much let them do their own thing (though, sometimes, if too many of them die, a mission can end prematurely). Your enemies are equally mindless, and generally employ one of two unrealistic tactics: they either stand in place and shoot at you, or charge you head-on while opening fire. They never really take cover or fire in short, controlled bursts, and though their aim is considerably better than those of your teammates, they still could have used some training. Fortunately, shooting them is rather fun, as they react fairly realistically to gunshot wounds (though in another nod to the unrealistic, there is very little blood and gore). Gunplay is far more satisfying here than it was in "Unreal II," for example, and despite a lack of variety in enemy encounters, it's pretty good stuff, and worth the price of admission.

Like "Allied Assault," "Black Hawk Down" is a heavily scripted game, which is a mark in its favor. In perhaps one of the best missions in the game, you'll be called upon to clear a garage of militant presence, only to find a horde of militia members swarming upon the place moments later. They even drive a jeep through the wall and open fire from a 50 caliber mounted machine gun! Fun stuff. Some missions may be a little too heavily scripted, though - when you're aboard a Bradley combat vehicle manning the turrets, you had better memorize the pattern of incoming RPGs, or else you'll never make it through the level. It's all about trial and error. Some helicopter missions are remarkably frustrating as well, thanks to this fact. A strange, limited save system compounds this problem. Don't expect unlimited saves.

While it is perhaps realistic that the game's environments all look very much alike, it's not the most fun from a gamer's perspective. Granted, half the game goes by before it begins to annoy, but eventually you can't help but mutter to yourself, "Wow, this looks pretty much exactly like the last level I finished." Compounding the issue are enemies who pretty much all resemble one another and fight in exactly the same manner. Fortunately the mission objectives are different enough each time that it shouldn't leave you completely disenchanted with the product.

Yes, "Black Hawk Down" has its share of problems, but it's still a good game. If you're a fan of "Allied Assault," or real world first person shooters in general, then by all means give this one a try.

Final Score: B-

I played the demo for Delta force and it was one of the most awesome shooting games for p.c. I ever played, and that was just the demo! You have a full arsenal of weapons that a real dealta force operative would have, and plus you can climb in choppers and use the mini guns or in the humvees and use the 50 cal. Also, you can operate grenade launchers and pretty much any gun you see lying aruond. You can also walk on any rooftop that you can get to via chopper or jumping. Ita also like in real life, like getting shot in the head will imedeatly will kill you, where getting shot in the leg bring your health down a little bit and you also move slower or don't run as fast. Same thing whith the arm except you won't load clipps as fast as you normally would. I highly recomend this game to anyone

Hi, first of all this is one of the best games that NovaLogic has broght out!! I resently got the demo game(and evan that I would have givern 5 star!!!)that convinced me to buy it. I think the best thing is that the missions are all as good as each other and u controll a team yourself, unfortunately it dosen't come out in the UK till March 24 2003 but it is hard to get in the US because it is sooooo popular so pre-order it NOW.It is similar to Delta Force Land Warrior in a way because of the settings. If u are a Delta Force fan then check out gamespot.com to see all the latest: reviews, downloads, screensavers and more!! Hope this review was helpful !!!!

Disgrace? or Rememberance?

First let me say the following -
I made a review on the PS2 game called Conflict Desert Storm.
and here I am again to review "DF-BHD".
I am a veteran and I will say that I am in the company of many "heros" and those heros are the men and women who have served this country to defend the very same opinions, which are shared in this forum about a game which had caused great debate.

Any veteran who has served, will "relate" and understand the "pros and cons" of games being made by real life experiences.

I think game programers have made an honest attempt to let the public experince what "WE" the veterans of previous wars have experienced, simliar to those movie directors who also make an "Honest" attempt in recreating events which veterans have experenced.
For many in the general public, many will not be able to serve and this gives them a chance to "respect and acknowledge" the sacrifices made by "America's Heroes".
It also gives them the chance to be a "quiet hero" without giving that "Ultimate Sacrific" which MANY of our Veterans have done so before me.
I believe that games done well, in this aspect, not only assist the public in understanding what the veterans went through and experinced.
War is Horrible and not to be taken lightly. Ever!

I understand that NOT many will agree with movie directors or game programers, but isn't it funny that Novalogic used "special ops" personnel for "advice" on this game?
To make sure they "got it right"?
and right they did....
How can Mark Bowen, the author of "Black Hawk Down" say a game shouldn't have been made?
Did he disagree when they wanted to make his book into a movie?
He also made sure they "got it right"?
and did they?....

and now the game review --

I will say this, this game is outstanding!
It has several elements in which makes the action "take you in" and then you become a part of what IS frightening and surreal.
This is what war is actually about, for they are both.

You have to use tactics and thought to guide your TEAM across several levels and to complete a mission.
You have full usage of Military equipment and use them to protect and defend your TEAM, UN, and various Military units, as well as civilans.

The graphics are outstanding and are fluid,I exprienced no
"pops or lags" or "breaks" in game play.
Blackhawks, little birds, and Hummers are well drawn and shaded.
Surrounding landscapes and weather, are right on the money.
When you look up and fire at windows and the sun is in the line of fire, it does get in your eyes, and effects your actions.

The SEFX's were superb and life like.
If you have a sound system like I do, 5.1 digital surround for a computer, you will rock!!

The AI, enemy and TEAM are outstanding, similair to MOH:AA. Only better.
Radio traffic and ambient noise added to the enivornment of battle.

The music soundtrack adds well to the game play and fits RIGHT IN!!

The game controls are easy and quickly adaptable.
A game card section is added in the box, to be placed over the keys to assist you in finding the right controls and what toggles what in the game.
Also included, is a booklet which explains the actions for which our Rangers and 10th Mountain served and experienced in Somolia, as well as a timeline for the events.
This "litle bit" of history adds to the respect given to these personnel who were there.

I will be honest, I have not played the previous DF games, for I only played the Demo version of this game, with all it faults, because it was just that, a Demo.
I was still hooked and once I purchased the REAL DEAL, I was NOT disappointed, nor will you.

I would recommend this game to all those who wish to play it.
This Veteran doesn't mind real life combat created or made into games.
As long as they are done well and can have a "respect" to those who have served.
Games which are authentic and not "Hollywood BS" styled are the games which I shall review, and I shall give you gamers a "REAL Opinion" of a military game.

So, "Saddle up and move out" and prepare for a gaming experience you will not soon forget.

Nevermind the negative reviews, they havent played the updated demo, this game is excellent and I dont understand how this would be disrespectful to anyone. Is MOHAA disrespectful to all WWII veterans?

Best Delta Force Ever Made

This by far is the best Delta Force ever made. I have only played the demo but the last two in the series were most definately duds. The graphics eclipse all of the other games. The trees actually sway when the helicopter goes by! The explosions look real and shrapnel comes out of the explosion, like the REAL thing. I have played all the Delta Force games and this ranks near the top with the first Delta Force. The person who said the game was a disgrace to all the people who died in Somalia, is wrong. Is Medal of Honor a disgrace to the people who died in World War II. These games are honoring the people more than disgracing them. Overall, if your looking for a fun first person shooter with great graphics and fun to play this is it!

First of all I have never played a Novalogic FPS besides BHD,so wheather they are good or not i don't know.
But i do know a good game when i play it and W0W, this is a good game.

The Pros:

+Very Good Graphics
+Lots of Shorter 15-20 min missions as oposed to a few loooooooong missions (Coughmedalofhonorcough):
+A good mix of Historical and hypothotical missions including the tragic but ultimatly sucsesful Oct 3rd 1993 raid in wich 19 american service men lost there lives:
+Medivac Helicopters will touch down to pick up a criticly wounded member of your squad, this however only happens in a very select few missions but when they do come it is very cool:
+You can man the awsome 50 Cal. gun on humvees, and the mind blowing 6000 RPM mini gun on black hawk helicoters:
+Multi-player is fun and includes the classic game modes including but not limited to, Capture the flag, team death match, and every man for him self death match (the latter of wich is my favorite)and i only have a 56K modem w0w:
+Easy to execute team commands and room take-downs.(The flash bangs and grenades in BHD have yet to be parelled by any FPS on the market):
+A large array of weoponry to chose from before a mission ranging from the standard M-16 To the all out full auto SAW to the long range M-21 sniper rife, plus a standard ussue of frag and flash bang grenades:
+The stelthy night mission with the silenced MP-5 is a BLAST!:

I could go on and on whith the Pros but this would be more like a commercial than a review if i din't point out the downfalls of this game.Sooooooo here they come.

The Cons:

-Limited saves.WHY??? WHY??? WHY??? save limits range from two to nine saves per mission which really is not enough on the mission where you run the Mogidishu mile.
-Events are heavily scripted.
-Music,hmmmmm there is something to be desired here, sometimes it's okay and somtimes it's downright awful, turn off the game music get the movie sound track and just play that instead:

-The manual could have been alot better,it is filled with more historicl data than key commands or tactics(I still don't know how to launch the grenade from my M-16)
-Some missions have a default weponry load-out so you can't chose what you want to take with you on a mission, but luckily this is rare and is not much of a problem.

in conclusion,This game isn't perfect but no game is,don't listen to all the negitive reviews, this is well worth the $$$,go out and buy this game, you will not be sorry.

4 1/2 Stars

thx :-)

I was somewhat disappointed with LAND WARRIORS and didn't even buy TASK FORCE DAGGER. But I downloaded the demo yesterday and am so far addicted. It is brutal. Most Delta Force games start off with a long walk to an outdoors target and then a long range firefight against stupid enemies. But BLACK HAWK is different. You start off in a Little Bird helicopter. Skinnies are shooting from the ground, and you have to take out several with RPGs before you can land. The action is fast... you have to start shooting right away, and there is a marked improvement in weapon sounds and modeling over the previous games. And unlike the other Delta games, your computerized teammates actually help you. In the first mission, you have to storm an overrun UN compound. Your teammates follow you and will even save your neck sometimes. The action is jarring and chaotic, with enemies firing at you from multiple directions at once. They even use rockets.

However, you need a fast pc to run this. I have a Pentium 4 1.5 gig with 640 megs and a 64 meg card, and I had to set it a lower resolution to get it to run without lagging. But maybe Novalogic has come up with a game to rival the vaunted "Rainbow Six" series.

All in all, I am impressed so far and will definitely buy the full version when it comes out next month.

great improvement

I played the multiplayer beta test and this game reaaaaaally improved and evolved over Task Force . It remembers me in some way MOH:AA , some things look similar : the way you carry your gun , the sniper rifle's scope , etc. I loved how you can fly on a chopper and sweep your enemies from the sky . Well , you have to try the beta to know what this game is and whats not , but , overall , this game is...GREAT !
