This game is F-U-N! But you can only save when you beat a certain level, and where is the place where you buy mushrooms with your coins like in the original Super Mario Bros.? I was a little disappointed, but its fun, dont get me wrong! But I was expecting a little more from Nintendo. So if you beat like 4 levels, but die on the next one, you will have to do all the levels over again from the last point that it lets you save. So that could get you really frustrated. I reccomend you buy it, because it is fun, but you might get a little mad over it!

When i saw the ad for this game i knew it would rock, and some of it did. I bought this game a month after it was released and I was really happy to own a fourth Mario Bros game. Here are my Pros and Cons.
Pros.
1. Graphics are perfect
2. Kept the old charm
3. Story is always the same but with Bowser Jr.
4. Items and villans are new and old
5. a good challenge
Cons
1. Can't save unless you buy a Toad house or finish a Boss or get a new world
2. Can't be Luigi (only in VS mode)
3. Needs more minigames
4. Hard to unlock stuff (they give no hints)
5. Overdid the music sometimes
I know there's alot but other than that if you just got your Nintendo DS lite get this game!
Great Game with many possibilities

I had to write a review for this game specifically because it is the only game everyone in my family plays, including my 60 year old mom.
The main game plays similiar to the original side-scroller mario, with a few additions familiar to Mario 64: Slamming down on your butt to destroy blocks below you, and wall jumping to hop from wall to wall to reach new heights. The main goal is simple: Get to the end of each level, and save princess. Each level has 3 large coins for you to find to unlock alternate paths and shops, and many levels feature secret paths to reach shortcuts and alternate areas.
The only flaw in this is that replayability is lower than I expected (one of the few reasons to replay levels is just to get the large coins you missed), lives are VERY easy to come across (everyone i know with this game has obtained 99 lives, the maximum), and bosses seemed particularly easy, especially the final fight. Most bosses you can eliminate in seconds if you have flower power as well. For these reasons I gave the game a 4 overall instead of a 5.
One of the features that draws many people to this game is its mini-games. There are many fun minigames, including a whack-a-mole, poker, card matching, bomb color sorting, tile-flipping puzzles, and the list goes on. The minigames feature 2-4 player multiplayer using wireless download play as well, some games only playable with 2+ people. These can be very addicting by themselves.
There is also a 2-person multiplayer mode available for the side-scroller game, where players fight to obtain stars from the environment and each other in a side-scrolling (and looping) level of their choice. This can be fun, but usually gets old pretty fast. The minigames are the more popular multiplayer feature.
I would still definately recommend this game to any DS owner, or at least borrow it from a friend to play the single player, since you only need one game in the end to play multiplayer.

I can't even begin to rave about how awesome this game is!! It brings my back to my childhood, playing the original Mario on the original Nintendo. Even after beating it several times, I still go back to the beginning and play all over again. Bright, detailed graphics and fantastic fun!! Highly recommended!

I was fairly excited when my mom picked this game up recently along with Tetris DS. I didn't quite get to it right away between Tetris and my brothers but a few weeks ago I finally got around to playing it. I thought it was decent but I kept getting the feeling that something wasn't right.
Well, I then went over to my friend's house and funnily enough he happened to have the original Super Mario for the GBA. The new one for the DS was more or less supposed to be basically a completely redone version of the original.
True, it has the same feeling of the original, but at the same time it's really different. It's got the physics of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, which make landing on small platforms and reaching higher areas becomes incredibly easy. This is different than the original in such a way that, for example, in World 4-2 (of the original) there is a small platform that you need to jump on to advance, but its so small its really easy to fall and die.
The Mega Mushroom just adds to how easy the game typically is, since you just destroy the level before you and get rewarded for it with extra lives. And the fire flower makes even the final boss(es) look pathetic.
The sound was a fair letdown, I must admit. I really would've liked to see some more remixed versions of the original music (like they used in Tetris DS). Though, it was a bit amusing to watch the many enemies and items jump up or turn for a moment whenever you hear a little "bamp-bamp" in the middle of the song.
Overall I was fairly disappointed, but I still acknowledge the fact that it was a good game and so I give it a solid 4 stars in both fun and overall. Have fun and, as always, keep gaming!
P.S. To play as Luigi instead of Mario, hold L+R while you're choosing what you want to do in the main menu. It adds a bit more fun to the game ;)
Definitely New, Not So Interactive...

...which is ok. I think if they made this game fully controlled by the stylus and touchpad it would make it a bit wacky. Sort of like Mario 64 DS. And like Mario Kart, you have the 2nd screen as your map. But you can also use it to use items whenever you like and also jump from area to area whenever you want.
That's really the jist of this game when it comes to NEW features.
Someone wrote "loosely based" off the old 2D side scroller Marios, but actually this is very much based off them entirely. The only difference is that the environments and characters are in full 3D yet still side scrolling view. Which is a nice touch watching the 3D models move around like that. Other then that it's a nice update to the old classics.
Especially big Mario which you never do get much to play with thanks to the use of a giant mushroom. And vice versa a mini mushroom that causes Mario to shrink (and the only way to access the other levels by defeating the enemy bosses as Mini Mario). There's also a new shell costume of which Mario dons, but can quickly get out of control if you run to fast and he spins all over.
All in all it's a very fun game, entertaining, but not very hard, which is good for the young folks but those reminiscent of the old days know how hard it was to beat a Mario game back then, and this was surprisingly easy.
Luckily the game is packed with mulitplayer features and mini games to add to the value and they do. Not all are entirely fun, but the majority do make use of the touchpad and make up for not using it much throughout the game. Playing 2 player will always be fun of course, unfortunately it's not WIFI so you have to be within range of someone else with the game.
Good When Playing

I loved the game and the side scrolling was a nostalgic step back in time for me. The game play was difficult at times. Honestly, I beat the a game in less than 2 weeks (with a grad student schedule and immunology test in the middle). Finishing everything completely (all levels and all star coins) was a challenge in and of itself. But it reminded me of the GTA series because after you beat the game there is really nothing to do anymore in the mushroom kingdom.
The minigames are amazing time wasters. I find myself playing them when waiting 5 minutes for other people etc. I have had limited experience with the multiplayer, but it was VERY fun of you have a friend with a DS.
Best feeling- seeing the 3 stars next to my saved game and getting to level 176 of the 'where's waldo' minigame.

hi.
I share a DS with my brother (boo hoo) and this was the first game we got. We both love it. The game length is great, and so is the music. I LOVE the mini games.
My brother has the old mario game for nintendo 64, and we still play that sometimes.
Anybody would fall in love with this game, as it is addicting. Once I start playing, I can't stop until my brother snatches it out of my hands!
Great game for any age. I wonder waht Yoshi's Island 2 is like?????
A little too simple for me

I'm not a big fan of platformers. I used to love them when I was little, but now I enjoy deeper games - games with complex stories, gameplay, and requiring 10+ hours to finish.
New Super Mario Bros is not anything like those games. It takes maybe two hours to beat your first time through, but that's if you fly through it. To get more out of it, you have to play each level over and over, collecting the 3 coins hidden in each world. I only replay games if the gameplay is incredibly fun, and that's just not the case here.
It's the same game as the first 3 Super Mario games...minus the awesome additions that made those fun. There's no flying in this game, no frog suits or racoon suits. There's just fireflowers (which show up FAR too much), stars, and 3 types of mushrooms. 4 types, counting the 1-Up mushroom.
"THREE types of mushrooms?!?" you gasp. Yes. There's the normal mushroom we've known and loved since the NES days. Then there's 2 new types: Mega Mushrooms and Mini Mushrooms. Mega mushrooms turn you into a giant that stomps everything on screen. Very fun, but it only lasts FOR A FEW SECONDS. Mini mushrooms turn you into a tiny dot-like Mario that runs on water and jumps far. But there's maybe a handful of times when the "running on water" trick comes in handy (actually, I NEVER used it), and the only other advantage is that you can access tiny warp pipes and tunnels that the developers have placed for you. Kind of...not too fun.
So. There's no real joy in the toys you're given to play with, so what about the gameplay?
The game is mostly played using the buttons, not the stylus - for which I'm very, very greatful. You only use the stylus to tap the item in your inventory (you're allowed to carry one) - it then flashes and drops onto the real gameplay screen for you to use. The controls are fine, of course.
It's just that the gameplay is far, far too easy. I never recieved a "Game Over" once. You can easily wrack up so many 1-Ups that you never worry about your lives again - WITHOUT EVEN TRYING. It's like they shovel 1-Up mushrooms down your throat for the whole game.
And you'll barely use any of them. There's a few tricky situations, and some of the coins can be in pretty challenging places, but the vast majority of the game is smooth sailing. And if you somehow have trouble - they SHOVEL fireflowers down your throat in this game. They spring up so often, it's like "Fire Mario" (or whatever) is "Normal Mario" for this game.
The multiplayer section of the game is pretty fun, and you don't need another copy of the game to play them! It just downloads onto your friend's DS. Very nice. The mini games especially are a blast to play with someone else. The standard "Mario vs. Luigi" game is all right - you run around small levels trying to grab more stars than the other player. I just liked the minigames better.
One more thing - the DS can barely do 3D. Yet the developers decided it'd be cool to make 3D character models and enemies instead of just keeping everything 2D. Sure, the box art looks cool, but in the actual game you're dealing with blocky, blurred 3D models against a nice 2D backdrop. They did that to make it appeal to the 3D audience of today, but I wish they hadn't.
Overall - it's a good game, and like I said earlier - I don't like platformers. So if I got through it and somewhat enjoyed it, then if you're a platforming fan you'll probably love it.
