Somehow this game does not get me nostalgic for old Mario games at all. I don't know why, it just doesn't.
That said, I really enjoy this game, and it's got me coming back.
I can see how some people would complain that this game is too hard, and others that it is too easy, but to me they got the difficulty just right. At first, certain parts of World 1 were kicking my butt. But before too long I got the hang of it, and I have had a whole lot of fun with it. Some stages can still seem difficult, but not too difficult. And at first, it seemed impossible to find secret exits. That's a good thing. I do wish that finding all the star coins was a bit more challenging though, it may only take you one heavy day of playing.
I think this actually has less classic mario enemies than Super Princess Peach has. Guess that was because they were trying to keep this game fairly simple.
The one part of this game that I think they could have done better is the music - none of the tunes really seem catchy to me. But the enemies and Fire Flowers sure seem to think the tunes are catchy - sometimes I let enemies live just so I can watch them dance to the music.
If you find that you don't like the koopa shell that Mario can wear, then this game is a little low on power-ups. But that's a minor gripe.
I think this game will keep me coming back for quite a while.

What can I say? If Nintendo had made a fourth game in the Super Mario Bros. series for the Original Nintendo Entertainment Center, this would be it. That's the best way I can describe it. Think of all the fun you had playing SMB 1-3 and you can get just an idea of what the New SMB is.
This game brings me back to the days when I used to run into Toys'R'Us (way before the internet days) and spend 8 months allowance on a NES game. I absolutely could NOT believe it when I popped the cartridge into my DS Lite. It was like a time warp but with new levels, new characters, and new features.
If you liked SMB 1-3 even a LITTLE, you'll LOVE this game. BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT!
My ONLY complaint is that its TOO darn short! I wish they would have added on another 8 levels! I could play this game forever. Really!
I have an XBox 360 with 9 games - complete with a High Definition TV set. I have everything from sports games to first person shooters, racers to role playing games. What do I play the most? The New Super Mario Bros. on my DS Lite.
Sure, the XBox, PS2, 360, etc. all have better graphics - but when it comes to SHEER FUN, Nintendo has always been King of the Hill. I only regret not getting an original DS when they FIRST came out - just thinking about all the hours of fun I've missed.
If you're even JUST THINKING about buying this game, trust me - you will NOT regret it!
Three Cheers to Nintendo and I cannot WAIT until the Wii comes out later this year!

This is the best Super Mario action/adventure game in thirteen years! Not since Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins (1993) on the ancient Game Boy has a Mario game been this totally satisfying.
"Are you crazy?!" is what some of you must be thinking.
However, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (1995) in my opinion was more a Yoshi game that just borrowed Mario elements into its game play.
Super Mario 64 (1996) and Super Mario Sunshine (2001) offered revolutionary 3D graphics and inventive quests, but the fun factor was lacking. Those games were more search and find games. This game returns to its roots. You know ... the flag pole jumping, goomba stomping, fire ball throwing, and turtle shell kicking action we all love about this classic hero!
For the first time in ages, Nintendo has gotten it right. The New Super Mario Brothers is one of the finest games of this decade. You must play it!

This was just the sort of game I was waiting for to lure me into finally purchasing a DS(although I waited for the US release of the DS Lite, for good measure) after some rather lackluster launch titles, in my opinion.
I haven't seen an original side-scrolling Mario game since Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and I have to admit I had high expectations for this game. So were they met? Absolutely! Although it is a rather modernized sort of Mario game despite the inclusion of many retro elements(like flag poles), it still holds the same sort of magic that the NES and SNES titles did.
Gameplay - 9/10: The physics and controls are flawless as they were before, my only complaint is swimming: it seems far more difficult to control Mario/Luigi underwater in this title compared to other titles, and you'll find yourself blundering right into Cheep-Cheeps in underwater stages. Oh, and also if you're holdingan object(Jumper, Koopa Shell)and you take damage, you drop it. In no other game has a Mario Brother ever 'fumbled' an item when hit.
Level Originality/Layout - 9/10: As for diversity, the levels are brilliant. Stages like riding a giant Wiggler or taking a floating platform the entire stage add great mixes and new twists to the norm. The reason I didn't score this a perfect 10 is because it seems that most of the levels are too short, especially fortresses and castles, some of which can be cleared in under a minute.
Enemies - 9/10: New Super Mario Bros. features a hoard of both new foes and returning favorites. The game has so many enemies spanning the history of Mario games, as well as new faces, that it seems almost excessive as to how many there are. So you may ask: why didn't I score it a 10? While it's true that there are many, many kinds of enemies, sadly, most of them are confined to only one or two stages in the entire game. The rest of the time you just see the same Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Cheep-Cheeps over and over and over again. It seems such a waste for enemies to be so repetitive when there were so many in the game to work with. The bosses are awesome, save for the fact that the mid-boss fights against Bowser Jr. were all pretty much the same with only subtle differences(such as fighting him on different enviornments). Why couldn't they have included the Koopalings?
Power-Ups - 7/10: After being overlooked since Super Mario Bros. 3, the Fire Flower finally holds rank as an uber power-up. But, unfortunately, that's just about the only notable power-up. Mega Mushrooms are rare, and usually only obtainable from the Mega Mushroom Houses on the map. And if you have a power-up when you use it(Fire power, Blue Koopa Shell, etc.), it returns you to Super Mario(Big) when the effect wears-off. As for the Blue Koopa Shell and Mini Mushroom, their uses are very limited, and I really only used either to unlock secret exits or get Star Coins. The Blue Koopa Shell is interesting, but I find that in most cases it's as dangerous to you as it is to enemies, as you can easily go flying off bottomless pits while 'rolling'. This is also the first Mario game in a long time to exclude a flying power-up such as Raccoon Mario, Caped Mario, etc.
Music - 5/10: The remixes and re-done versions of classic music such as the Starman theme and Super Mario Bros. 3 boss music are exceptional. Unfortunately, the new tracks created solely for the game are somewhat irritating to listen to, and extremely repetitive. Not catchy like other games were. On a side note though, it is rather amusing how Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and other enemies make actions during certain points in a music's play.
Overall Rating - 9/10: This is a great game for Mario fans or those looking into the franchise. Even with some quirks, they're easy to overlook when compared to the pros versus the cons. If you have a DS, I'd say this is a must-have for your DS game library.
Easy to beat, hard to complete.

In the age of game guides, there's always more to a game than meets the eye.
New Super Mario Brothers is a wonderfully designed game. The music, the animations, the level designs, and the overall classic Mario feel have been retained. They even left in certain hitches that'll take anyone who lived off the original back to the golden years (all I have to say is that, at the end of one level, there's a turtle walking down the stairs. You know what to do.)
I can promise that, the first time you grab the Mega Mushroom, you're going to laugh out loud as you plow through walls and snap pipes in half.
Getting from beginning to end, for even a halfway seasoned gamer, shouldn't be too difficult. For some, it may be a bit too easy. Saving at a halfway point, which also happens to be right next to a Powerup block and a 1-Up kinda takes away some of the challenge.
The ultimate challenge comes from clearing the game. Getting every star coin and finding every alternate route adds an additional layer of gameplay that should keep people busy long after the final Bowser has been sent to his firey grave.
Keeps you Busy for a Long Time!

I must say, this game was difficult at times, but overall it was extremely entertaining! It was filled with many levels and like my title says: It keeps you Busy! I loved It! Especially the Mini-Games! I tried out the Multiplayer Feature and it's great! When you finish the game completey [When I mean completely I mean you collected every star coin]
There Isn't much to do except playing Mini-Games. Anyways, grab a copy because it's worth it!
Classic gameplay but not really "classic" to me

To be honest, despite the fact that Mario is probably THE most well-known and popular character in Nintendo's repertoire and probably in gamedom period, I always had an inkling towards stuff like Legend of Zelda or Final Fantasy. Like many game franchises, there's enough familiarity and basic gameplay that anyone can pick up but in the end you want to feel like "that was one of the best Marios ever". In that regard, New Super Mario Bros is enjoyable in a way but it's also a bit too familiar and certain things are kind of all over the place.
Story: Oh, do I have to say this? Okay fine, here goes: Princess got kidnapped and Mario has to go save her and in order to do so he has to keep travelling to different worlds to get there. I mean, Mario plots have never been about this so if you're thinking something even remotely in-depth as far as Mario is concerned like its Paper series, check your head.
Graphics: This is where the game shines. While it's still 2D graphics, they're pretty attractive, well-animated and incredibly colorful. The overworld graphics resemble the board game look of Mario Party which gives it a better immersive quality rather than a yellow circle(Super Mario World) or a black square(Mario 3).
Sound/Music: Surprisingly it's kind of forgettable. The music fits the world but it feels somewhat detached as if playing the game makes you tune out what you're hearing. Despite the fact that it's fine in the game,I call this a "stereo" game: I just put on a cd rather than listen to the game itself.
Gameplay: Same as always: jump button, special button such as getting a flower you can shoot fireballs. The one problem is that the special button also acts as a sort of "run" but strangely Mario just feels sluggish which I've never had a problem with in a Mario game. There were times that I died simply because Mario didn't run fast enough to leap a ledge or simply he would just...slip off. I named it "Butterfingers syndrome" when I was young.
The main selling point I guess is that Mario can nab a Large Mushroom and he essentially becomes "Mariozilla" where he just rampages through the level with a meter showing his escalading destruction. It's a neat idea but it either doesn't last long enough or it's just something that's not as fundamental to the gameplay. Think back to when Leafs and Feathers brought about new level exits and secrets but here it's just fun in a "destroy! destroy!" kinda way.
Is it challenging for the young ones? It can be. Couple stages bugged me but whether that was my bad abilities(doubt it) or the game itself(maybe) but it's still one of the better DS games you can find but it's probably not its best.
Almost TOO good :-)

This game is almost too good--my 12 year old has played it almost every single day for as long of a time we will allow her to since she got it. She's been very pleased with it and says it is challenging without being impossible. She is not a big time "gamer", so it may not be challenging for those who are, but is still fun.
As fun as the originals.

I was so happy to see Mario back where he belonged, in side scroller. The new features were great, such as the super sized Mario and the micro mini Mario, and the minigames were great as well. After I beat the regular game, I mainly just kept playing the minigames, which has kept me entertained for months.
Great Game!

I actually bought this game for my girlfriend for times when her work is slow and she's bored. She's found the game very addicting. I played the game game for a little bit too and found it very entertaining. It's set up like the classic Mario games but there are a tone of new things in the game to keep it challenging and fun. It also has single-cartridge wireless multiplayer capabilities which means two people can play against each other with only using one game cartridge. The other person simply goes to the DS Download thing and connects to them. My girlfriend and I tried it out. She whooped me about 98% of the time.
If you're a Mario fan (especially of the classic Mario games) I HIGHLY recomend this game.
