First Game of This Type to Keep My Interest

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

I have always played the puzzle type games (Tetris etc.) but decided to try this game with the new DS system. I became addicted....I love it. This is the first Mario game I have played so can't compare it to other Mario games but I have played such games as Shrek and Lord of the Rings and find the Mario game more fun and easier to play.

I am older (57) so don't have the skills of some of the younger users but enjoyed sharing it with my nephew as we compared gameplay. He always beat me of course....:-)

A Mario fan dissappointed and bored with this one.....

First off I am 23 years old and I'm using the kid's review since i have never purchased anything off Amazon.

I am a huge Mario fan. I've loved every Mario I've ever played, except for Super Mario Sunshine. New Super Mario Bros. really got me excited when I first seen it come out. I bought a Nintendo DS just so i could own and play this game. After playing it for a few hours i got bored with it and i was starting to get really disappointed. But i thought, i am only halfway through world 2 so ill give it more time.

I got through the whole game, except for the two hidden worlds, and i was so disappointed. First off, this game is SOOO easy! The levels only take a few minutes, if that. There is no real challenge, and all the old puzzles and such are in this game. That may be great for nostalgic purposes, but this is a NEW game, hence NEW Super Mario Bros. This game is basically a Super Mario World 2:Yoshi's Island and Super Mario 3 hybrid, with Mario 64 like play in 2-D. The levels throughout the game offer pretty much no diversity. I loved diverse worlds of Super Mario 3, but in this game i really didnt care that i was in a desert world or water world, it was all the same bullcrap.

A few of the added stuff to this game just seems stupid. For example, Mario's triple jump can be used maybe twice in this game. They dont give you enough room to pull this jump off in any of the levels! I dont think i even had enough room to pull off a double jump. The wall jumping is different from what you have seen in SM64 or Sunshine. You dont just jump to the wall and immediately kick back up. You have to jump, let yourself skid down the wall, then jump. It wasnt too bad, but it was rather annoying sometimes. Another complaint is the huge mushroom that this game has added. There is no real fun in using this mushroom! When you get it, you of course get as big as the screen, then you run through the level clearing everything and everyone out of your path, then 8 to 10 seconds later you shrink back up to small mario. You then get a few 1 UPs depending on how much damage you did. This was fun the first time i got the mushroom, which happens like 5 seconds into the very first level(LAME!!!), but after a few more times, i completely ignored them when they came up.

Another big thing that i love in Mario games, again except for Sunshine, is the music. This game has a very limited amount of music that it uses. The first level music is what you will hear probably 85 % of the game!! I hate that tune, and it shows just how little time they spent coming up with new tunes. I think this is another big reason that this game got real old after awhile for me.

I know i said before that this game is easy, but you have no idea if you are a nintendo veteran like me. I know this game will be a little more challenging to new comers and kids, but it is a total letdown to the older and experienced crowd. Just like many Mario games, there are 2 castles in each world, one halfway, and one at the end. The halfway castle always has Bowser Jr. as it's boss! What the F***?! This made me so mad. He does the same moves pretty much each time, with maybe one little change(sides of the floor will be missing, etc). All you have to do is stomp on him 3 times and he is done. Or you can powerstomp him twice, or throw freakin fireballs at him and beat him in half a second! Just wayyyyy to easy! Come on Nintendo, this stratagy has been milked to death and every game it is easier and easier. I remember Mario 3 had these tactics, but it was still kinda hard because the boss would have spiratic moves. The moves Bowser Jr. uses can be anticipated way ahead of time. He runs and slips, and if you stomp on him you while he is on his back, you will hit his spikes and die, assuming you are small mario of course.

For the main world bosses, they are not really any harder than Bowser Jr. They are more dynamic and take a bit more stratagy, but any experienced Mario gamer will know what to do right away. The Tank boss is probably the hardest boss in the game. The final boss is also ok, but it still needs to be a challenge.

As a whole, this game is basically the same old song and dance. You go around collecting coins for 1UPs and you now have 3 big coins you collect so you can unlock new paths, mushroom houses, and 1UP houses along the road. All of these are not necessary and it is really no reward in collecting these things.

I cant tell you how disappointed I am in this game. It kills me to score this game the way i did. I am even being very generous by giving it what i did. I absolutely love Mario games, but this one was a slap in the face for me! I really think that this was just hyped up and everyone bought into it. You can see from IGN.com and other people's on here that it is a good game. But i really want to know if some people deep down were a bit disappointed and in their love for Nintendo and Mario, gave this game praise that really wasnt deserving. I love the NES-N64 days of mario, but in all honesty, I want new Mario experiences. This one could have been alot better.

If i were to grade this game on a scale of 100, this game would recieve a 55. In my college grading scale, 60 is the least for passing, according to the syllabus, but they will pass you with a 55. So, i say this game fails, but ill pass it on.

a tip or two...

It's a great game, but i just want to point out that you can be Luigi in the "campaign" by holding down L and R and then pressing A to select a saved game. ALso, to unlock worlds 4 and 7 you must beat the final level of worlds 2 and 5 with mini mario

best game i have ever played

this is definatly the best game i have ever palyed on the ds. it is like the old one ecxept for the graphics which are 50 times better on the ds. i highly recomend this game. there is only one thing i dont like. you cant save at any level. you have to play through like 5 levels before you can save. i still love the game though. it is the best of all of the games that i own.

It's not just the same ol' same ol' Mario. There are A TON of mini games included in this little cartridge. They're all very entertaining. My first experience with NDS was in fact one of the mini games in this game, Wackamole, and I absolutely loved it.

Also the multiplayer features a type of game where you have to collect a set number of stars before your opponent. I play it every sunday with a little girl in my church and we both love it :)

God I Miss Mario

It's been a really long time since we've seen Mario in his 2D roots. I remember back in the good ol' days when 8-bit graphics were king, save points were a rarity, MIDI tunes were the bomb, and games that froze could be fixed (temporarily) by literally blowing the dust out of them; those were the glory days of video games. Although things are fun now, and with the next gen systems including the Wii on the way, nothing nowadays equates to that feeling that you had when playing old school 2D sidescrollers. Mario 64 was a blast, don't get me wrong, but this is how Mario became a video game household name.

GAME CONCEPT: Back to the basics folks; this is the good ol' "sidescrolling, get to the end of the level while stomping on goombas before the time runs out, finding secret warp pipes, and trying to get the timer's last digit to read 6 when you get to the finish flag" Mario. Think of the feel of all of the Mario All Star games (1, 3, and World, anyway) rolled into one, but with a lot more horsepower behind it. Essentially, it plays like Mario 1 and 3, with the overworld level selection similar to 3. Each world has multiple levels, and each with a tower where you will fight Baby Bowser, and a castle to mark the end of the World where you will fight different bosses. The super mushroom and fire flower have returned for powerups, along with a few new ones as well. The one item that most people who have been keeping an eye on this game have noticed, and are aware of by now, is the Mega Mushroom, which grows Mario to the size of the screen and you can obliterate pretty much anything in your path, warp pipes and blocks included. There is also the Mini Mushroom, which allows you to navigate pathways that are too small for even normal Mario. These are actually required to find some of the secrets in the levels. Finally, there is Shell Mario, where he'll don a costume similar to the Hammer Brother outfit from Mario 3, but his maneuver is to roll into a shell (a la' a stomped and then kicked shell) and take out anything in your way. One nice feature is the ability to save items, like you could in Mario World, if you were already maxed out on power, but rather than pulling into the screen after getting hit, you have to manually bring them in by touching the item's icon on the touch screen.

At face value, the levels are very similar to the ones found in Mario 3. However, to keep up with the times, there are a lot of secrets stored in each stage, so hardcore gamers who can't help but complete every possible thing in the game will be pleased. One of the secrets that is common to every level are the Star Coins. Each level has 3 of these coins that you can collect, which is optional, but definitely adds to the replay value. Rather than being there for the potential for a 1-up, as the Yoshi Coins were in Mario World, these coins will allow you to unlock different pathways in the overworld maps, allowing you to take alternate pathways to get to the World's end level castle, or to other levels that are isolated from the main path. These items are similar to Yoshi coins in their placement, and you will need to use your head as well as have a keen eye to find them. The good thing is that when you collect one (and you haven't died afterwards in that level) you never have to find that one again, so the frustration factor is kept to a minimum. Another thing that keeps the levels going is the hidden exits, which aren't totally new to Mario games, but they are really well hidden this time around, and this always gives gamers reason to come back for more.

The touch screen is rarely used in the game itself, only to be used for pulling in the item from your saved item box, and selecting a different World from the main map screen. Other than that, it really only serves the purpose of the level's map, so you can see how far along you are, and what Star Coins you have collected in the level. It is used extensively in the minigames, however. A note on the mini-games that come with the game...they are pretty much pulled straight from Mario 64 DS. Nothing new there.

GRAPHICS: 2D Mario has never looked this good; obviously since it's been so long since a 2D Mario, but since all the characters are 3D models on the stage, rather than sprites, the animation is far more fluid. I have yet to see the game's frame rate drop at all.

SOUND: Many of the basic sounds, like the jump and the coins and the fireballs, seem to be pulled directly from the first Super Mario Bros. Definite nostalgia factor with that, and a definite plus in my book. If you finish a level and hit the pole at the right time so you get fireworks, it will play the Super Mario Bros end level theme that we all know and love (it sounds direct too, not a remake of it...ah, that brings back memories). Some more recent sounds show as well, such as Mario 64's Feather Hat music for the Invicibility Star. The music is typical Mario fare; catchy, but not obnoxious.

CONTROLS: Another thing I miss about Mario games are the simple controls. You should know what to do within the first three seconds of the game. The only new things that you should really be aware of is the triple jump (dash and jump three times), the butt-stomp (press down while in the air), and the wall jump (hold the direction of the wall you're on, and press jump). Just a note, I felt that the wall jump was kind of odd at first, because I've played almost all Metroid games to death, and the wall jump in those games required you to push AWAY from the wall you were on, not towards it. If you think that will be a problem, you'll get over it quickly. I did.

OVERALL: This is a must own, no question. If you're thinking about it, just get it. Rarely do I feel that way about games unless I read other reviews first, but being the Mario fan that I am, I just had to pick it up for old times sake. I'm glad I did, and you'll be glad you did.

A Classic Game Dumbed Down

I am seriously in shock at the rave reviews this game has been getting. I was originally not intending to get this game; not because I don't like Mario games (I loved the SNES version), but I was planning on buying another DS game. However, the reviews swayed me, and I picked this up.

What a mistake.

I do admit, I didn't watch a ton of videos on this game, like I usually do with most video game purchases. I figured I could rely on Nintendo to recreate a classic in portable form. Sadly, I was wrong. This game takes everything that was great about the classic Mario Brothers, and destroys it. The levels are all EXACTLY THE SAME with different colors. There are about 3 or 4 levels total that they just recolored (and changed the model of the enemy but they are the same). Not only that, but the few levels that there are are extremely easy, dumbed down, and short.
The "boss" is also a joke. There's no strategy, just jump on him like he's a koopa. 3 times. Every time you face him. Big freakin' woop.

Someone's going to be getting this game very cheap, as it is not worth my time. Don't waste you money on this game, go for Mario 64 DS or MarioKart DS, those games are well worth their cost.

The most fun game for DS so far

I bought this and Prey(for PC) in the same week. I played Prey only half through and haven't touched it for a while. I played Mario a lot more, I beat it and still trying to get more star coins and all the secret exits.
Its that fun!

Mario is looking great for his age.

I got home after getting this and was so excited to play it. I started and saw that there were only so many worlds and got worried. I thought this is going to be so easy and i'll finish it by tomorrow. Well I didn't it gets harder as you move along and I have 2 saves now one I just see how fast I can get through the game and the other I try to get all 3 stars. This game is so fun and if you like mario or games like it you will love this game. I have 4 games for ds. Mario and Luigi Partners in Time, Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Brothers,Wario Ware Inc. and madden 2005 so mario is keeping me loving the DS. Now if only new original games would come out from sony I wouldn't feel like I wasted my cash on a PSP.

Great game, well worth it because it even includes several other games too

Aside from the main game, is cartridge also includes several other mini games that are surprisingly fun and playable. It's worth the money for that alone, as these mini games are actually quite fun! There are action games, casino games, puzzle games, etc. As far as I'm concerned, this is a must have game if you have a Nintendo DS or DS Lite.
