Now I have to say that the graphics are great throughout the game. The only downside is that I must have been watching cinema for like 45 minutes straight, you even were asked to save between cinemas cause it was so long! The times you do play though are very difficult and challenging which is whta I love. Overall, it is a great buy if like that much cinema(even more than FFX!). The battle system is something new with using up to three attacks per turn and using AWGS(big robots) to help you out. I just think this game was concentrated alot more on graphics and cinema than gameplay.

I have been waiting for another "Xenogame" for 5 years. I had pretty high expectations of this game. Now that I have the hang of the game I have have to say THIS GAME IS AWESOME. It is complicated, I like that, I don't know about you. The only complaints I have is that it is a very long time between save points, and the cut-scenes sometimes take near an hour. The battle system is great, the dungeouns are HUGE with many braching paths. This game can easily take up 80 hours or more. In the game you actually start to care about the characters and what happen to them. If your willing to spend alot of time playing, than this is the game for you.
Go Get This GAME!!!!

Speaking as an advid fan of rpgs, i can say that Xenosaga definitely ranks as one of my favorites of all time. I am the type of gamer who usually starts a game and does not finish it due to a lack of interest. I have not finished a Final Fantasy since 7 and it is not from a lack of playing. In the last 2 weeks i have logged in over 30 hours of Xenosaga; which when taking into account the sheer amount of work i have to do for school..is a lot! This game is phenomenal. I am an anime fan as well, and the themes, animation , and story behind this game give such the feel of playing an anime that all fans of the genre need to pick it up!
When playing an rpg the biggest factors for me are story, characters, and playing system. The story for this game is phenomenal and very entralling. Many reviews have stated how "it plays like a movie, 30 minute cut scenes, blah blah blah" but they are missing the point. The 30 minute cut scenes are great and very rewarding especially after a huge boss battle. They serve to forward the story(a must in rpgs) and it gives the player a rest from fighting so many battles. The characters in this game are also very unique and amazing. If you do not believe me, play this game for 4 hours; meet Ziggurat 8 and if you are not sold, i do not know what to tell you in terms of character. The fighting system in this game is very addicting as well. I found myself leveling my characters up to increase their attacks to defeat bosses a lot, its a very rewarding experience when the gnosis fall to your feet : )
This game also has some great minigames! The xenocard game within(a ccg based on the xenosaga universe within the game) is also very addicting!!! You get to play the game and earn more packs of cards to play more of the game. I've logged about 8 hours into this sidequest.
All in all, if you love RPGS, anime , or just a great story go buy this game!!!!!

Well how do I start, I guess the best thing to say is that this game is trully the Final Fantasy 10 killer, it has everything you could possibly want in it. Lets start with the graphics, all I can say is WOW. Everything is down to the very last detail. The battle system is one of the most creative systems I've ever used. and ive played tons of RPGs. You get to normal attacks per round for 4 ap, but if u guard or use an item instead or even choose to do just one attack, ure next turn with that character is 6 ap which allows u to do your character's specific tech attacks. awh inspiring graphics on that one. To go along with the fighting are your hands AGWS or Anti-Gnosis Weapon Systems that are mechs, armed to the bone with machine guns, laser weapons, swords, fully customizable fighting machines that are at your disposal. Now to the main course, THE STORY. From the very beginning you're tossed into the turmoil of the girl named shion as she and her team of techs try and create the ultimate anti-gnosis weapon also known as Kos Mos. As the game progresses u learn more about the mysterious artifact known as the Zohar, and the struggle to find out its location. Unlike most FF games, Xenosaga has some deep topics and is serious at time while others its laughing and having a good time, it makes u think, and than makes you think again! When the characters are happy, ure happy, when the character are hurt or in pain, u feel it. Bit by bit you are slowly absorbed into their world, and with all the cut-scenes you feel like you're living it. A must have for all RPG and Sci Fi fans. Der Wille zur Macht, THE WILL TO POWER, will u take that power and go out and buy this game and join in on the epic story and adventure of a life time, or will you ignore it and miss everything?? the power is in your hands..........
Fantastic Game!

Not since FFX have I been so excited about a game. Great plot and game play. Can't wait for Episode II. I much better game than .Hack.
The music is also fantasic and is along the quality of FFX.
Purchase the book. It adds a lot to the game because it lists all of the charactors skills, tech attacks, and ether.
Awesome in-depth game

This game brings you so in-depth with the story line and into the characters it is unreal! With videos and movies lasting up too 30 min. The graphics are great and is not far a gamer who does not want to sit down and play and get into the story.
Love it, Hate it, It's still Xeno

We can only hope Namco(somehow) pick's this franchise up again and give's so many people what they so desperately NEED.
Even as this game may have been a bit long-winded, those that knew Xeno, knew it for It's story and the power it brought you.
Could this game have used work? Yes. However, it is still a great first episode and is STILL better than watching that god-awful graphic overdose bonus cinematic disk that came with the LE version of Episode 2.

I had the mixed reviews prior to getting this game, and I tend to side with the higher reviewers. It is like an interactive movie, but that's cool. Save points are in wierd places, but still quite frequent. The whole anti-gnosis concept infiltrating into the futuristic androids is a bit amusing. Am intrieged by this game and its humour and will most likely purchase the other 2 as well.
Best story I've ever experienced, and probably ever will. ** spoiler free review **

Before focusing specifically on Xenosaga Episode 1, I want to make some general comments about the series. Episode 1-3 are all direct sequels off each other and pick up the story right where it left off in the previous episode, so don't plan on starting with episode 2 or 3, or just playing episode 1, if you want the true effect of this series. Think of these games exactly as you would a trilogy of books. Also, it is NOT a sequel of Xenogears, and officially is NOT connected to that game in any way, although there is more than enough that happens throughout the series to create controversy that it is.
This game, and the entire series, is all about the story. While there are plenty of other things that make the games great and fun to play, the engrossing and emotional story is clearly what leaves its mark on people. There is nothing that even comes close to Xenosaga from my experience, and I'm referring to not just video games, but movies and books as well. THE STORY IS THAT GOOD! If that aspect of a game does not hold your interest you may want to pass on this game, and series, however, as there are many cut scenes of length and story elements that could leave someone frustrated if it's not of interest to them.
Graphics (8/10) - Graphics are somewhat dated, and they definitely can't compare with Episode 3's graphics, but for their time they were good. Not something that's a deal breaker by any means, and it's not like you're playing a 16 bit game, but compared to todays standards they are lacking.
Music (10/10) - The muscial score for this game is one of the best I've heard, and in my opinion the best of the series. Amazing music in this game, worthy enough of getting the soundtrack for sure. Some of the tracks are breathtaking.
Battles (9/10) - Complex battle system is refreshing for those that want a challenge and originality, but perhaps could be seen as cumbersome for someone wanting simplicity. Very fun once completely understood, but don't expect to just jump into it without the training option or reading the manual.
Extras (10/10) - Lots of mini games and one in particular of an extreme depth, the Xenocard game. Lots of fun and very intricate. There are also other hidden goodies throughout the game, and more mini games, so plenty to do besides the general game.
Story (10/10) - As stated already, this is definitely the highlight of the game and series. Expect a very mature storyline that touches on everything from philosophy and psychology to the nature of existence and humanity. Many twists and turns through the course of the series, and engrossing and immersive are adjectives that barely do it justice. The story is uplifting and tragic at the same time, and will definitely pull in your emotions. Upon completing episode 1, however, expect a bunch of questions with just a few answers.
Characters (10/10) - I figured this needed a separate category from the story, even though it clearly falls into the story. The characters are so well developed in this series it's amazing, and even the nature of the villains goes beyond simply black and white good and evil. Everyone has a story and a history that plays into their present actions, including the villains. Also, the characters are so endearing that it's almost impossible to not become extremely attached to some of them, especially as one continues to progress through the series. Expect to laugh and cry with them as you go through the journey.
Fun factor (10/10) - Even apart from the story, I found the game very fun. Battles are a bit more complex than your normal rpg, but that was a positive for me. The level design is good and there was a good overall challenge to the game, but not to the point of frustration. Just a fun game, what can I say!
Xenosaga may not be for everyone with it's frequent cut scenes and heavy story elements, but for the niche that it caters to I don't believe anything can even come close to it, including the ever popular Final Fantasy VII. If you are a fan of a solid story and haven't played this yet, you need to do whatever is necessary to get this game in your system as soon as possible!
