All "Steam"ed up...

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 8

Well, I've been playing CS for such a long time now and thought hey, CS:CZ is out. And hearing all those reviews about it, I decided to get the game. I started with Deleted Scenes first, and somehow, it never was half the fun CS is, or Half Life was. But all in all, Deleted Scenes was OK, if not too much fun. (Makes sense they were "Deleted") Then came the trouble, I launched CZ and thought hey, let's go online. I happen to be on a 56k line, by the way, because that is all they have here.
I was told to install Steam and then it started downloading the latest update for CZ. And after an agonizing half an hour wait, I wait to play the game, and I get a message saying Steam was going to copy all my existing HL, OpFor, and CS/CS:CZ and all those other installs into its folder. I had to wait another agonizing one hour for it to complete.
I get offline after a couple of rounds, disconnect and then try running Deleted Scenes, BAM! No Show! Apparently, I can't play the game in Offline mode. After checking so many websites for a resolution and being unable to find one, I resolved myself to skipping Deleted Scenes and using it just for online gaming, which just defeats the purpose for which I bought this game.
I can understand piracy and all, but this is like trying to kill an ant with a nuclear bomb.
I am so much disappointed, and I would really love it if we could just go back to the normal play that existed before without making us customers tear out our hair in frustration. Sierra, are you listening?

What a Disappointment

Counter-Strike is with no doubt one of the best online games ever made, but Condition Zero is just an insult. They repackage the same game into a pretty box, gave it a nice name, and made us wait for over three years. With this, they took advantage of a number of loyal customers like my self, who were expecting the best game ever.
VERY BAD VALVE!

I will think twice before I buy another game from Valve.

Save your bucks for a better game

I got CS: CZ with some degree of trepidation because I had the sneaking suspicion that it would really suck. Guess what, it does. There are not enough changes to the game to warrant paying $40 bucks for a repackaging of the multiplayer game that has been out for a long time. Very few new additions to the game, the new textures look worse than the old textures! Most of the levels are reused levels from the original multiplayer game. The only significant addition to the game is bots, which are actually pretty good(hmm, 3 years to add some good bots to an already great game??). So, if your internet connection is very good and you can't play Counterstrike on the internet, get this game. Otherwise, there are much better single player games out there such as Halo and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE COUNTER-STRIKE

Good Game - Bad Restrictions

CS:CZ is actually two games. Condition Zero is team play using the built in bots. There are 5 tour of duties, each with 3 different maps. Most of which are from the original Counter Strike, but with added graphics. There are 3 levels of difficulty, easy, normal, and hard. Each tour of duty has map goals that must be completed before you can secure that map. Goals range from obtaining a certain number of kills, to rescueing hostages, to completing the round in under a certain time limit, or a combination of all. My opinion is that the enemy bots seem to always be better than your own team.

The other game is Condition Zero - Deleted Scenes. This is more like the original Half Life. There is a puzzle that has to be solved to complete the level. Its not as fast paced as the first game, at least not in the beginning ( I havent played it all the way through yet).

My biggest complaint about the game has nothing to do with the game itself. It has to do with the games dependence on Valves STEAM client (www.steampowered.com). Currently, the only way to receive patches and updates is by installing the STEAM client. If you do, you will have to play your game through STEAM, which creates a complete copy of your czero directory (wasting hard drive space). It will not save your games to the original directory. If the STEAM network cannot be reached then you will not be able to play the game unless you play using the original CD. And of course you will have to start over because all of the saved games will be in the STEAM folder instead of the original czero folder. I understand that STEAM is designed to eliminate piracy. But as usual, it ruins the game players experience by forcing unnecessary restrictions.

If you have a broadband connection and you don't mind being dependent on STEAM for your online gaming and updates then I recommend buying the game. If you would rather play on a LAN or mostly in single player mode, and want the option to download patches, I suggest waiting until the CS:CZ people get the message and start offering the updates for download before you buy this game.

I give the stand alone game 4 stars - 5 stars with the updates only available through STEAM - I give STEAM 1 star, its a good idea implemented incorrectly.

You've been here and done it already

Let's face it...Counter Strike fans will give this game high ratings no matter what. True die hard CS players like myself laugh at the weak attempt that was made in Condition Zero.

If you have played Counter Strike, you will be disappointed. If you have dial-up or cannot access the internet...I still cannot recommend this game unless the price goes below $20.

Save your money, buy Unreal Tournament 2004 and download some of the weapons mods and conversion mods available for free. The enemy AI is mind bendingly awesome and will humble you quickly.
Plus, you get a more dynamic game that constantly changes and is very dynamic.

Condition Zero is stale, repetitive, the enemy AI is predictable, the objectives are stupid - example, you must rescue 5 hostages and kill a terrorist with the sniper rifle. Ok fine...but see how hard it is to rescue 5 hostages when your computer AI teammates keep killing the terrorists and finishing the level before you can rescue any hostages at all! I had to let the terrorists kill my guys on purpose just to get around this problem!

Ok, I've been with Counter-Strike the generation since it first hit stores and became retail a few years back. Ever since I have been playing the game mostly through my week and my growing life. I stopped playing it last week because of all the new Sierra HL series coming out. I recommend this game, You will get allot of action the only problem with the original CS is that allot of hackers are around now and will totally get on your nerves if you dont get on the right servers so make sure you enter a VAC server or a CAL.CFG server for better results while trying to go into and server and get away from those hackers 3-4 years of playing Counter-Strike and finally a newer version i can't wait !!!

I am a huge CS fan but...

(1)Cheating is such a problem that if you want to play this game then hopefully the single player mod will be good or else just play it on a LAN with friends. The internet on-line games are rife with cheating. Sometimes more than 50% of the players are using aimbot and wallhack and even the anti-cheating software is no good against them. Be prepared to be slaughtered if you do not cheat.

(2)Valve have done nothing to curb this problem and they have even managed to get the code for HL2 leaked so cheating is going to be rife again.

(3)They keep pushing the dates forward by 6 months or more which makes fans very unhappy.

Anyway bottom line is the single player is all this going to be worth. The multiplaying arena is full of cheating and I would certainly NOT pay for a game that can not combat cheating. It should stay free until they can resolve the cheating exploits once and for all. Cheating ruins this game. It is like getting scores of 0 kills 52 deaths and the guy doing it all is like 60 kills 1 death. Is that worth your money?

deleted scenes excellent,the rest sucks

the deleted scenes were a huge improvement over the original counterstrike.why couldn't they make the rest of the game like that?in the online version, or regular single or multiplayer mode, the characters move like robots.very fake-like.when you shoot them, they do the same stupid thing, hang there for a minute and fall down.the original version is much more lifelike, the reason i loved this game in the first place.plus there is no way to search for a local sever in "steam". so you can't play on a computer to computer network.had high expectations and was really let down.

I already got, but not that great

i got my condition-zero on miRC and the game wasn't all that great. i only played the ritual missions and it sucked! not even good, the realism sucks and the fun was boring. i say this is the worst counter strike sequel ever made. if you want the game just download a program called miRC and download it for 1.9gb and save your money folks, its not the worth it. try call of duty or something. sorry for ruining your hopes
