Usability quirks & crashes hamper fun, addictive play

For ideas and overall gameplay, this game is great. It's easy to get started and easy to understand the basics. The sound is not only great, but appropriate to events in the game. Getting feedback on amusement park customers is easy, and the information is useful. The whole economic model is easy to understand and adjust. The visuals are great, and the way that park employees are manipulated is well designed.
But, I found some usability quirks that made gameplay frustrating, and random crashes made it so I didn't want to return to play. It's not always clear where and how to run paths to attractions. Worse, if there's just one tree on a square where you want to set an attraction, it won't go down there. (Not like SimCity, which takes trees out automatically when you build). Trying to build a custom roller coaster was a trial, one I never completed. To make changes, you go back an un-build from the end, which can be tedious if you've built quite a bit already. Finally, I started getting random crashes, which would just dump me out of the game. Enough that I stopped playing (even though I was mostly haveing a good time).
I love simulation games (I've played all the SimCities, plus Sim Copter, SimTower, Railroad Tycoon, and more), and trying to design and build my own roller coaster was a trip. Better testing and a bit more attention to good design would make this an A+ game.
What, no violence?

The Emperor loves his violence. Games without the satisfying spray of bodily fluids and the rumble of entire city blocks don't usually satiate his dark urges.
Why is it then that this game is addictive?
Another reviewer mentioned flexibility and creativity, these are the key aspects of RCT and its follow-ons. Plus it's just plain amusing.
Feel the power of creating a coaster with an excitement rating of 7.5, intensity of 7 and a nausea rating of 4.
AAHHHHHHH the evil glee.
Buy this game and Loopy Landscapes. Play it with your kids, then pack them off and play it alone. Play it on your laptop on the plane and demand they come up with a PocketPC version.
After all, it's been the in the top 10 of pest selling PC games for over a year. Millions can't be wrong.
Hey, wait a minute! All those deer hunting games were in the top 10 too.
Hmmmmmm. Insidious.
Tons of Fun!

Moments out of the box this software-sim was loads of fun. Our family played it for hours and hours day after Christmas. Highly addictive! We found out it was easy to use without any difficulty. Safe for kids! So realistic you manage/operate the theme park at your fingertips. Building from the variety of thrill rides and decorative shops is the fun part. Imagined building your own coasters and you want to try it yourself without waiting in those long lines. If you're rollercoaster fan like us..this CD-rom game is the one for keeps!
Buy it! You won't regret it!

I bought this for my 13 year old, who was not happy (it was not on his list). In the three weeks since, it has become his favorite game, and now he has his friends coming over to play as well. Great playing value - over the vacation, they have spent 2 hours plus per day with it, and are still thrilled! As am I.
The Best Computer Game in Years!

If your looking for a non-violent (except for the puking), visually stunning, addictive, extremely fun and satisfying game, you have to buy RollerCoaster Tycoon. From the moment my friends and I took it out of the box, it has literally been played everyday since. Everyone that I introduce it too instantly loves it and gets so mad when someone else is on the computer and they can't play it! It really is alot like SimCity in it's approach, but then it has so much to offer, it makes SimCity quite boring. The graphics are great, the sound effects are very life-like and you really do get excited when you first open your custom-made park! To watch the guests arrive and have fun on the rides you've designed, adds more to the pleasure and excitement. For beginners it is a bit difficult and designing a roller-coaster from scratch is HARD, but once you get the hang of it, the fun is to see just how thrilling and scary a ride you can make. The game is packed with all sorts of extras, i.e. scenery, water fountains, shops and stalls, even a huge assortment of landscaping to make it picture perfect. You can't go wrong buying this. It is a blast! My friends and I thank Chris Sawyer for creating such a great game.
This is a Great Game!

I am 9 years old. I really liked this game. It was actually my little brother's, but he never played it. At first, we couldn't figure it out, but then I did figure it out, and I started playing it on my little brother's computer, where it was installed. I reallly liked it, so my dad installed it on my computer. I don't recommend it for younger kids because it would be too complicated for them. It is pretty realistic, people bring different amounts of money, there are food and drink stands, and bathrooms, and you have to get loans to start building your park that you can pay back later. You have to hire people to work in your park. The people throw up ALL THE TIME, you can build lots of different kinds of rides, they even blow up sometimes and kill the people. You can also move the people around. Another way to kill the people is to put them in water and make them drown. You have to build paths for the people to walk on. You can even move the ground up and down. There is a limit to how high and how low you can make things, though. The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't make your park extremely big. This is a fun game to play over and over again.
PS from Conrad's mom: The Kids Review link does not work, so I am allowing Conrad to post this as an adult.
I play hours on end.....

This is one of my favorite games. I enjoy the realistic features. The rides/stalls, such as:
Food Stalls
Roller Coasters (of course!)
Merry Go Rounds
Ferris Wheels
Ballon Stalls
Information Booths (that sell umbrellas and maps)
Water Rides
Just to name a few.
You get different weather as the year goes on, and the umbrellas make lots of money when it rains. Rain is a little bit of a downside, because then people don't want to go on certain rides when it rains.
Also you have 4 kinds of workers:
Handymen-who clean up when people throw up (yes, people throw up after going on intense rides), clean up litter, water flower beds, empty trash cans, and mow grass.
Mechanics-who fix rides (rides do break down),and inspect rides to make sure they don't break down or explode because that is dangerous to guests, who die if your rides explode.
Security guards-who watch for vandalizim
Entertainers-who make your guests want to stay and keep them happy. They can be panda bears, tigers, or elephants.
Also, my younger sister's teacher kept this game in their class room at school, because it taught them how to spend money on important things, loans, etc.
It's a wonderful game and if I could have a SimsCity game or this game I would choose this one.
Completely Addicting

This game is so much fun. There is so much to do in the park that I haven't even gotten out of tutorial mode yet! It's fun trying to build your own rollercoasters and watch the other rides go. The detail in the game is outstanding. If you like going to amusement parks, then you'll love this game.
