works on Vista but required lots of experimentation and Googling

Just bought this game used (thanks goodwillbooks!). I eventually got it working under Vista 32-bit, but I had to use windows NT compatibility mode (win 95, 98, 2000, and XP compatibility modes did not work even though those are the operating systems this game is made for).

The graphics are great and work well on a modern computer. It's 2008 now; most complaints are from 2000/2001. Some people find this version harder to control due to the 3D graphics, so if you've never played Myst before, you may want to buy the 10th anniversary edition instead. If you have played Myst before and enjoyed it, then you'll probably enjoy revisiting the Ages in 3D.

Good luck finding a cheap copy!

Being an avid Myst fan, I stuck to my original Windows 95 version because I liked the original and didn't need fancy graphics. I recently decided to look into the other versions, since they were aged and probably not much to buy.

While Myst Masterpiece Edition is available cheaply, this version of Myst isn't. The game was discontinued shortly after it was released, since it required huge processor requirements at the time.

Unfortunately, that leaves the copies that were sold as "Collectors Items", which is why you see the hefty price tag.

I saw it selling for 30-40 on eBay, but haven't seen it any cheaper.

There is a demo that works for XP available, you just get to play the Stoneship age, but seeing how wonderful the game looks there you're probably going to want to get the real deal!

A Blast

This is one of the best games I have ever played! It is so much better than the Myst Masterpiece Edition. I recomend people who don't have Myst yet to get this instead of the Myst Masterpiece Edition. They will probably like it better. Thank you Cyan for making such an amazing game!

See MYST the way it should be

MYST was a pioneer game that was ahead of its time in many ways, and which has never really been duplicated in anything outside of its sequels. It imerses you in a rich, detailed, beautiful, and intellectually stimulating world that grabs hold and won't let you go. When my husband and I first played MYST, we did not do anything else from the time we were hooked until the time we solved the game. We ate in front of the computer, slept only a little, and in general ignored the rest of the world, because the puzzles were calling. (We were grad students at the time, and no one really missed us for a few days, luckily.)

MYST's only real drawback was the technology of the day - it's hard to be an immersive environment when the game is composed of static pictures, no matter how lovely. RealMYST returns to the original game and brings to it the ability to move in a continuous fashion and pan 360 degrees, breaking the last barrier between the game and reality.

This game stands the test of time and continues to be beautiful, impressive, and thrillingly challenging even 10 years after its debut. How many other computer games can say that?

BUYING TIP!!!

This game was a lot of fun but a little short compared to the other Myst games. Riven is perhaps the best of the Myst series but I have yet to play Revelation. You can buy this game new and cheaper just about anywhere. And if you still have no luck, try Ebay. This game also works for Windows XP!!! Some people have had a little trouble with it but just make sure you download the patch which can be found at ubisoft.com. I played RealMyst on XP with no trouble. Good luck and ENJOY!

Very cool game!

Not as good as the other two, but definitely worth playing. The Rime age is AMAZING. It makes the whole thing worth playing. The Selenetic Age is another of my favorites. I was also a little disappointed because almost nothing happens at the end, but, thank goodness, there's a sequel. VERY nice graphics.

A nice way to revisit MYST.

You can see all of the other reviews for the details. What I'll tell you is that if you didn't like MYST, there is no reason realMYST will change your mind. Despite a SERIOUS makeover, it's the same game.
realMYST is for those of us who liked the original and want to revisit the game in a new way. The original Myst runs terribly on my newer machine. So even when I feel like playing it, even if to only walk around on the islands, it becoms a pain.
This new version runs great. So if you have a machine that can handle it (by now you prob. do)and liked MYST, I would suggest you get this game .

Good, but not as good as the other 2

I started the Myst games with Exile, and worked my way down to Myst, Real Myst.
I won't tell you the story, (you've probably heard it from all the other reviews anyway) because discovering the story, and whats going on is half the fun!
But i have to tell you that i love, and i mean love Riven and Exile, and i thought that RealMyst would be awesome, but i couldn't help but be dissapointed. Its not the full 3d format, some people would call that annoying, but i don't think its that bad, but its just that the ages aren't half as incredible as in Riven and Exile, and the game in general is just not as good as the sequels. Maybe its just because i basicaly knew the storyline before i played it. But whatever it was i just didn't find it as good as the others.
And by the way to returning Myst fans, the new Rime age is a big dissapointment, its so small!
Anyway, its worth the price, but just letting you know that its not all that.
And if you haven't played a myst game DON'T READ THE STORYLINE! Discovering the story detective like is half the fun. And that goes for all myst games.

Even if you've played the origonal MYST, I strongly recommend the updated version realMYST. You can pan around in this version for a better view of your surroundings. For the visual effects alone, it is worth it. If you haven't played any of the MYST games before, you're really in for a treat. The main attration to the MYST games for me is the total lack of blood and gore: you don't kill and chop off body parts to win the game.
