Good Graphics But Slow...

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 9 / 13

realMYST is an update to the original Myst back in the early to mid 90's. This time, you get a full screen of graphics that you can freely move in. No keyboard commands are needed; everything is mouse driven. This is a big plus in the days of mastering several keys to play a good game. The graphics have been updated and they are gorgeous. You can now look at the side of a building or behind something you never got to see. The sounds have also been updated to an extent. Much of the music is updated, but many sounds remain, which is OK. The videos inside the books with the missing pages are the same and the message to Catherine is really not as good (graphics wise) as the original. My only complaint is that all of the free movement is very slow. Now, I have a Celeron 400, but I also have a Voodoo4 32MB graphics card, and it screams on games like Elite Force. But realMYST is choppy and slow. However, this can be overlooked, because revisiting the sites of MYST in real 3D is a joy.

Excellent Game!! Very Impressive

This is am Excellent Rendition of an already great game. Some of the earlier reviews indicate difficulty in controlling the manipulation of objects. This would not be a problem if they just RTFM. The instructions show how the mouse cursor changes when it is pointed toward an object that is able to be used.

The game play might be a bit slow on older machines but if you have a new machine there should be no problem. Be Sure to read the System Requirements before buying.

The game is identical to the original except for the added Rime age and the 3-D control

The new Rime age is small but is a sort of "bridge" to the sequel, Riven. That is all I can say without calling this a spoiler.

The game has 3-D action identical to the first person shooter games except No shooting. This game is suitable for all audiences the only problem like with the original Myst game is a mild depiction of implied narcotics abuse. (Just a drawer filled with pills and syringes)

If you are are a Myst fan, whether die-hard or just average, This game is for you.

If you are not a Myst fan but a fan of FPS games, This may be for you.

Overall, This is a great game although it may be a bit difficult to control on older machines.

Try the demo- controls & speed are fine; gfx gorgeous!

I've only downloaded the 46MB demo from GameSpot so far- haven't played the real game- but if the game plays like the demo, the control and speed issues mentioned in the review are not a problem at all. I won't really try rating the game itself, but this is my estimate.

I would suggest that others try downloading the demo (if you can handle 46megabyte download :-) ) , and see for yourself.

As noted in another review, even with no manual I quickly figured out that the "hand" pointer icon changes (thumb disappears, or hand opens) when it is over an object you can manipulate. I never ran into movement problems while trying to manipulate objects, and I didn't seem to hit time problems, I moved pretty quickly through the world & the puzzles. I never had problems turning either. I moved pretty easily w/ the mouse over narrow stairs and walkways etc. (glad Myst doesn't let you fall off & die, like other games!) Only difficulty was sometimes getting caught on the wrong stairs when both up&down were right next to each other etc. but I just backed out and walked more carefully, went fine.

You can also control the brightness (key, for exploring tunnels, dark rooms, and outside at night!!) , with Ctrl-Shift-+ & - (numeric pad + - keys.) Otherwise, it is very dark and difficult to see key items sometimes!!

I have a PIII-800 system, 256MB ram, nVidia-TNT2-pro gfx card, and the graphics were completely smooth and fast even in 1024x768x16bit. They were beautiful! Waves move, raindrops fall (in stereo surround sound), lightning strikes & lights up the roiling clouds, fish swim by underwater, etc.- gorgeous! Use it an expensive screensaver if you don't like the game :-) The Myst world is so beautiful (and beautifully rendered here!), the 3D engine is great as it lets you turn and explore and just sight-see, as the game deserves. I also like just moving through the world like a FPS game- eg walking w/ constant movement- as opposed to the "click & turn/move" interface of the old game.

I'm looking forward to buying this game, or maybe MystIII:exile, since they share the same 3D engine. I never got around to finish ing the first Myst on my old 040 Mac, these graphics & 3D movement breathe new life into it!

A nice way to revisit MYST.

You can see all of the other reviews for the details. What I'll tell you is that if you didn't like MYST, there is no reason realMYST will change your mind. Despite a SERIOUS makeover, it's the same game.
realMYST is for those of us who liked the original and want to revisit the game in a new way. The original Myst runs terribly on my newer machine. So even when I feel like playing it, even if to only walk around on the islands, it becoms a pain.
This new version runs great. So if you have a machine that can handle it (by now you prob. do)and liked MYST, I would suggest you get this game .

Word. This game rules all humanity. Buy it. The graphics rule and I think the puzzles are very cool. They are very realistic. They require common sense. Or at least the lack of utter stupidity. Just buy it. You will love it more than life itself. On second thought, if you buy it, it will become your life. It is that realistic. You will find yourself trying to click to walk forward in the real world. I am actually addicted to realMYST.

I was surfing the net when I came across a demo for realMYST. I was shocked and excited at the same time... out of nowhere, the game I've been looking forward to ever since it was announced is finally in a playable form. I instantly downloaded it, and was both impressed and disappointed, mainly because of some spots being incredibly choppy, and the demo would freeze up quite often. However, after downloading the 1.2 Patch-up and changing some of the options in the setup, the demo worked perfectly and was everything I was hoping for when I first saw the demo online. One of the stand-out spots in the demo was walking up to the telescope; I don't know why, but it just gave me a haunting feeling I had when I first played the original Myst when it came out back in 1993. I can't wait to get this game... whether it's walking through all of the redesigned ages or experiencing the new ending and new Rime Age, I know this game is going to be one of my favorites.

This third version of Myst is better than the first two by far, because of the graphics, sound, and added world. The graphics are advertised as 3-D, but I think that the graphics are more 4-D, because the time of day changes and everything gets darker periodically. The added world helps explain more about the sequel, Riven, and is shorter than the other original worlds, though still fun. This game is so realistic, I really felt as though I were in the game. The cons are the price and the system requirements. It requires something like 700 MB of disk space, and super graphics cards. Even on my billion-hertz processor, this game is sluggish, but it's really worth it when you play it. You can move around like in a video game, not a choppy-screen thing. It has no violence or swearing in it (though it does have an intense story), but rather requires thinking, unlike many of todays bloody gunfights.

Wow, things have changed!

I have just finished reading the Myst books, and it got me into the mood to play the game again. It was then that I saw this new version of Myst on the shelf of my retail store.

I remember getting Myst when it was first released almost a decade ago, and wow, has it changed! I was a little daunted at first when I saw the super-high system requirements...then again, I felt the same way all those years ago when I saw that it required one of the new-fanged 486 computers to play! So, I slapped down the bux and installed it.

The feeling that I got when I opened the now-polygonic MYST book at the beginning was almost nostalgic, and when I was transported to the Isle of Myst, I thought I was looking at a photograph of a landscape. WOW, the graphics on this thing are the best I've ever seen! The WHOLE game, every room, every object, every WALL TEXTURE, has become three-dimensional. It must've taken a heck of an effort to recreate the Myst world like this, and the effort shows!

Now, with graphics aside, the plot and puzzles are pretty much unchanged since the original Myst. The puzzles actually seemed easier this time around (even the god-awful keyboard puzzle)...but that is probably because I was around 11-12 years old at the time! Of course, even the keyboard puzzle was more interesting to solve when it was three-dimensional.

I gave the original Myst a lower score because I remembered it as being able to be beat in five minutes (and you still can if you know what to do), but this latest recreation of Myst has breathed new life into it, and it has made me realize something: Myst is a classic that, no matter what form it takes, will always remain a classic. If you have the horsepower to handle it, pick up realMYST. After all, it's a rarity to live in the same time that a classic was created in.

The best part was just figuring out the objective of the game! Exploring mysterious ages, finding clues, solving puzzles only to search for MORE answers...I can't wait to play Riven and Exile!

The realMYST 3D graphics are awesome and gameplay utilizes all that my new 900 Mhz, 128 MB PC has to offer. 360 degree viewing capability brings life to a flat screen. After a brief loading period my PC flew through the scenes effortlessly, whether entering, opening, pushing, climbing or walking. Very cool.

Highly recommend for any puzzle-lover in need of challenge...and don't be too proud to look for game hints online.

realMyst is the most REAL 3D game I have ever seen! It takes the old frame by frame Myst game and makes it a free look 3D environment. Rain, snow, lightning, birds, sunrises, sunsets and even starlight! realMyst makes the old game a reality!

With the massive hardware requirements aside, this program IS worth purchasing. I own all the Myst/Riven products and this program is tremendously better than all of them. It also includes a totally new level called the RIME age. It also has weather and lighting effects never before seen in a RPG. (At least I haven't seen any yet!)

It will make you feel like you are REALLY there!

realMyst comes complete on one CD and does not take more than 150 MB of space on the medium installation mode. It requires at least a 3Dfx(R) video card and 64 Megabytes of RAM. A PII 450 is needed to run it properly but is will run on slower PII's with minimal quality loss. (I recomend 128 MB RAM or more, otherwise hard drive memory swaping will make the game performance lag.)

Keep a look out for Myst III - Exile. Myst III is written the a free look 3D environment also and if it's anything like this game it will be worth ordering also.
