Smooth as glass

Since others have complained about problems getting their system to run realMyst, I just want to say that it runs beautifully on my computer. The movement is so clean that it almost seems as if I go places just by thinking about them. All of the music and beauty are still there, without the annoying shift from one still scene to another that was the only real drawback of the original Myst....

dark and hard to use

The illusion of motion, the passing clouds, the rising sun, the rain and storms were great, but God help anyone who does not know where to go or what to do in this game to begin with.

I have a new dell dimensions computer that meets or exceeds the system requirements of this game but I found it very difficult to move around and especially difficult to see necessary details. In the generator room for example, where you need to set 59 volts for the rocket ship,I could not read the numbers on the dials. If I had not kept notes from the previous version I would never have been able to set the voltage. The worst part, however was trying to set the sound tone settings on the rocket ship control panel. After setting the lever, I could not test the notes without inadvertently changing the setting. Additionally, I never knew whether I left them in the right place or not and could not tell without pulling the main lever to test them all. I finally gave up after half an hour of trying to launch the rocket ship, a task I have done numerous times without problem in the old Myst. I also found the whole game very dark and impossible to find buttons, handles, and interesting objects that I know to be there.Even after setting the contrast and lightness controls on the monitor I had a hard time finding my way around.

I bought this game to have fun and explore Myst with a fresh vision, but I found it too difficult to use and frustrating to play overall. I do not recommend this game for anyone who does not know this game intimately to begin with.

This game was a lot of fun but a little short compared to the other Myst games. Riven is perhaps the best of the Myst series but I have yet to play Revelation. You can buy this game new and cheaper just about anywhere. And if you still have no luck, try Ebay. This game also works for Windows XP!!! Some people have had a little trouble with it but just make sure you download the patch which can be found at ubisoft.com. I played RealMyst on XP with no trouble. Good luck and ENJOY!

Delightful!

I bought Real Myst a few days ago and have been thoroughly enjoying it. Myst island is a delight. Standing on the beach watching the sunset over the heaving waves is a perfect stress-buster. I enjoyed the ambiance of night and the crickets chirping among the trees. I also chased the pair of butterflies all over the island (who's there to see me =) ). SPOILER- for those who've read the books there's an extra treat. Among the trees behind the cabin is the grave of Atrus' grandmother, accented with those little blue flowers that mean so much to him. I'm looking forward to exploring all the ages. Of course, the game isn't perfect. Moving about is jerky, rather like being drunk! The save/reload screen is difficult to use a mouse in though that might just be my computer. Despite these and other faults, those that loved the original Myst will enjoy this - if they're willing to burn the money needed to bring them up to the game's steep system requirements.

EXCELLENT REMAKE OF THE ORIGINAL!

For those of us who have played the original Myst and Riven, realMyst will be a nice refresher while waiting for Myst III: Exile. The puzzles are the same but the 3-D effects are awesome. There is a new "age" at the end of the game that is more of a tease than anything else, but still fun! KEEP IN MIND THAT THE BOX CLEARLY STATES THAT YOU MUST HAVE AN NVIDIA GRAPHICS CARD!!! If you don't, you will certainly have some problems. I was fortunate and already had one and the game ran flawlessly. Looking forward to Myst III in April 2001!

See MYST the way it should be

MYST was a pioneer game that was ahead of its time in many ways, and which has never really been duplicated in anything outside of its sequels. It imerses you in a rich, detailed, beautiful, and intellectually stimulating world that grabs hold and won't let you go. When my husband and I first played MYST, we did not do anything else from the time we were hooked until the time we solved the game. We ate in front of the computer, slept only a little, and in general ignored the rest of the world, because the puzzles were calling. (We were grad students at the time, and no one really missed us for a few days, luckily.)

MYST's only real drawback was the technology of the day - it's hard to be an immersive environment when the game is composed of static pictures, no matter how lovely. RealMYST returns to the original game and brings to it the ability to move in a continuous fashion and pan 360 degrees, breaking the last barrier between the game and reality.

This game stands the test of time and continues to be beautiful, impressive, and thrillingly challenging even 10 years after its debut. How many other computer games can say that?

Phenominal Graphics (with the right PC)

I bought this game with very high expectations of the graphics. Like the Editor's Review states, the 3D engine did put quite a strain on the rendering, making it crawl through the scenery. But at the time, I had a 500Mhz PC with 64Mgs ram and onboard vga. Knowing the game had more potential, I quickly decided to build a new PC. Now I run RealMYST on a 1Ghz with 256Mgs ram and Gforce2 card w/32Mgs. The difference is breathtaking. Lifelike scenery, precise control and movement around objects, and virtually no problem with controlling levers and buttons in the interactive environment. Anyone considering buying RealMYST should look at what they will be running it on. In my opinion, the cost of the better hardware is worth the expense, especially with the video card.

The best way to experience Myst

realMYST is the same game as Myst, in that the puzzles are the same; however, it is a much different experience. The realtime 3D makes the ages seem much more real, and alive. If you're playing realMYST at 12:00 am with all of the lights in the room turned off, and a good pair of headphones, then you might for a moment, truly believe that you are there. It will take a very powerful computer to achieve this state of nirvana; however, if you have a powerful enough computer, then this is definitely the way to experience Myst. Even if you have already played Myst, then it is still worth getting realMYST.

RealMyst like a pop-up version of a picture book...

Real Myst was made by Mattel Media in place of Cyan, the original company. The graphics and textures are reduced and more pixelated from the original Myst. The navigation system gave me an alternate headache/near motion sickness (Bonamine, where are you?!?). The only true redeeming feature in my estimation was the realtime weather on Myst and the Stoneship age. You can sit and watch dawn turn to day, dusk and then night, watch the fog roll in from the sea and the sun slowly sink behind the watery horizon. Other than that it was the same old Myst, only with more freedom of movement.

I preferred Myst III: Exile as the graphics were far more detailled and the 360-degree navigation was easier on my eyes than the 3D keyboard-driven controls of RealMyst. One other feature that made the game worthwhile was the new age at the end of the game. This age was short, true, but drastically unlike any Myst age seen before or after (including in the new game Myst Exile). Diehard fans of Myst will want to check this out, but the system requirements are high for what this is, and it will run very slowly on older systems providing your 3D graphics card will support it. IMHO I would recommend buying the new Myst: Exile in place of RealMyst. There are five new ages to explore in Exile, only one very short age in RealMyst. Think of RealMyst as a pop-up book remade from a picture book.

Even if you've played the origonal MYST, I strongly recommend the updated version realMYST. You can pan around in this version for a better view of your surroundings. For the visual effects alone, it is worth it. If you haven't played any of the MYST games before, you're really in for a treat. The main attration to the MYST games for me is the total lack of blood and gore: you don't kill and chop off body parts to win the game.
