I'm sure that you've read all of these reviews saying "Counter-strike is the best game ever!!!! BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!" and such, but fail to tell you of the many flaws that Counter-Strike has, so here are a few flaws to showcase for Valve or Sierra's attempt to milk more money out of a 1-2 year old product:
1. Net code and the engine: Think you're safe if you go behind a corner? Not on your lagged enemies screen you're not. While this does make the game a bit fair, what's bad is the fact that people can lag themselves to exploit this.
The lag compensation is flaky, as sometimes you'll have a sniper rifle and you'll be sitting absolutely still and your crosshairs will be on an enemies' head, and then you shoot and it misses.
The Half-life is extremely inefficent, meaning you'll get low framerates considering the small number of polygons on screen. This is more noticeable if someone starts bogging down the game with smoke grenades.
2. Visual flaws: Think you got a headshot because you saw the blood burst or the hit to the helmet? WRONG! Bullets in Counter-strike tend to hit in a different place then where you see them hit.
In the case of some guns, it appears as if you are reloading the same clip back into the gun. Considering they had months to fix this...
3. Gameplay flaws: The bounding boxes of the player models are distorted. This reduces the chances of you hitting someone's head if shoot at what you see is their head.
Some guns are so inaccurate that it'll make you think you bought a defective gun (something I call the broken barrel effect)...
Counter-strike features a money system in where it awards you for rescuing hostages, killing an opposing team member, for being on the winning/losing team, etc. and you use this money to buy bigger weapons and such. Often, this just allows the winning team to win even more instead of giving the losing team a chance or keeping it even...
There are 22 weapons in Counter-strike, however, some are near useless. The two semi-automatic sniper rifles are supposed to have an advantage in firing rate... however the recoil is so severe that you have to wait a second to fire again. Add to the fact that you have to be a sitting duck (literally) to use the guns due to the broken barrel effect, and well, you would probably be better off using the knife.
Some weapons are severely over-powered as well. The AI Arctic Warfare/Magnum kills in one shot to your small toe when many other weapons can only tickle you to death, enough said. The Desert Eagle, which is extremely cheap, can not only act as a sniper rifle in the hands of an expert, but can shoot accurate in the air, as well as kill in 3-4 bullets (even with armor) excluding headshots.
Pricing of weapons is horrible. The M249, the most expensive weapon in the game, has been toned down so severely that pistols are more effective than it is.
4. The players: While you can try to use strategy in this game... most of the time people won't listen to you and will block you so you can't escape the swarm of enemies with MP5s while you're sniping or flashbang you while you're rushing in to plant the bomb.
Some servers have friendly fire turned on, which means your teammates can accidently shoot you, which really isn't a bad thing. However the number of endless jerks that PURPOSELY kill you when you're on their team is.
In all fairness, this mod is definitely above average... however considering that you can download this for free and get Half-Life: Opposing Force, the Adrenaline Pack, or just plain Half-Life for very cheap (probably in the bargain bin by now), it's definitely not worth purchasing this.
A waste!

I don't know why Sierra really bother to repack Half-Life in yet ANOTHER version! What else are they going to do? A Halflife Pack with Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, and Action all in one? This is a waste! A waste of time and money, for Sierra and the consumers! I'm only talking about the product, Counter-Strike is actually not a bad mod, since about 90% of the Half-Life gaming community plays it, there is no room for other mods. This is bad for the people that are tired of Counterstrike and are looking for something new.
Buying Half-Life by itself is cheaper, you can download Counterstrike for free anyway.

Boring game. Half-Life is a modified version of Quake 2, and very lame modification of the Quake 2 game engine. CS is just as lame and boring as Half-Life. Don't believe the B.S. statistics about the number of players. Half-Life based online games must register with GameSpy, thus all servers are registered. Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament register with GameSpy OR other master servers, therefore the GameSpy statistics are skewed.
If you want a fast action game, play Capture the Flag or Rocket Arena under Unreal Tournament or Quake 3. The fast action and impressive graphics will blow you away.

this is the worst experience i've ever had with any piece of software i've ever bought. I can't really comment on the game, because i've only gotten to play it for 5 minutes. When you first connect, you have to wait for the list of 8,000 or more servers to load, which takes 15 minutes on my cable modem. You have the quickstart option, which is supposed to take you to the best available game without loading the servers, but every time i try to connect that way, it takes twice as long to find a game that will keep me connected.
So, when the server list loads, you have an ungodly number of servers to choose from with names like |xP04k|--clan-we0wnzU. ok.. whatever.. so i try to connect... everything seems to be working.. it says its scanning my hard drive for cheats.. ok.. now it's downloading a map that i don't have already.. ok.. that takes 5 minutes to complete.. ok.. now it's processing a beavis and butthead wav file.. hmm.. do i really want to hear that? well... i would like to play this game, so i wait it out.. another five minutes go by and.. finally, i get connected.. i can see the other people playing what looks to be a rather intense game.. and it asks me what team i want to be on: Counter Terrorist Forces, Terrorist Forces, or Auto Select. I choose Counter Terrorist. Ok.. looking good.. no, wait.. it's asking me what team i want to be on again.. Ok.. i choose Terrorist this time. Ok.. this is it.. i finally get to play.. uhh.. no wait.. it's asking me what team i want to be on again. hmm.. let's try Auto Select. a few seconds of uncertainty.. and yep.. its asking me what team i want to be on again.. Ok.. this time it's going to work i know it. I confidently click on Counter Terrorist and.. finally.. i get to the next screen.. where it gives me choices on what breed of Counter Terrorist i want to be. I pick the first one, because, being a newbie, i'm unfamiliar with the intricacies of how the game works... so.. looks like i'm connected.. they're in the middle of a round, so i have to wait until the next round starts, but i'm in spectator mode.. i get to move around like a phantom and watch everything... ok.. Terrorists win.. now i finally get to play! Ok.. it's asking me what team i want to be on.. hmm.. maybe its just because its a new round. I click on Counter Terrorists.. It worked.. now i choose the class of Counter Terrorist.. Yep.. it finally worked! i can see my team, and a little animation of myself cocking my gun! so, i follow my team down a hill and through a door.. and... black screen.. then i go back to the server info screen, and at the very bottom it says: player kicked by console.
after i throw my keyboard across the room, i plug it back in, and exit the game.
Think this is an isolated incident? it isn't. this is the same thing that happens every single time i've tried to play this game.
i asked for some advice on a half-life forum, and the nice people there suggested that i was a "lamer n00b" or something like that, and the one real response i got said it was probably my computer. that isn't likely since every game i've ever bought plays just fine, and this game is older than most of the ones i've played. and besides that, half-life, and all the other half-life mods work fine for me. Counter Strike is the only one that gives me problems.
but, they say there are 500,000 people playing this game at any given time. So it must be working for somebody. If you're feeling lucky, why not give it a go. it might work for you.
it sure looks fun.

Why would anybody pay money for this when you can buy HALF-LIFE for 20 bucks and download it for free along with hundreds of other mods. TFC and DoD are much better anyway. Save yourself the money and buy Half-Life instead.

If you love laggy connectivity, game crashes, having to watch and wait for the start of another game when you die, downloading 19mb (!) patches just to get the game to run (which BTW, Sierra doesn't even bother hosting on their web site), then Half-Life Counterstrike is for you. Buggier than a picnic and, forget about trying to play it on a dial-up connection.
On the other hand, if you're looking for the best first person military style shooter out there, I highly recommend Delta Force Land Warrior. While DFLW's graphics may not be quite as crisp as HLCS, there is no comparison in all other departments.
HaHaHaHa I'm surprised they call this a game

Well lets just get a few things clear on why this game [stinks]. First of all when you get it you will find out you have to download about 6 hours of updates! Well after I did that I went to play a multiplayer game and quickly found out the graphics well arn't "up to code" we'll say. This game would be great if you barley want any realism at all, as in you can spray out bullets on full auto and have no accuracy problems. To top it all off once you wait 30 minutes to get in a game, you can hardly hold a connection for 5 minutes before you have got a message Surver has been lost or something like that. If you want a good shooting game and a GREAT multiplayer gam buy Rouge Spear, which is much more realistic!
Great Game, But I'll Get to the One Star

Counter-Strike is a spectacular mod for a spectacular game. Half-Life, though somewhat outdated now, is still one of the best FPS games ever made. The gameplay is superb, and the mods that have spawned from the game are great in their own right. Counter-Strike is one of those great mods. Counter-Stike is so great, that Sierra decided to sell a retail version of the game. This is why I am giving this only one star, in spite of the spectacularness of the game. Go to pretty much any website where games can be downloaded, and you can get this game, provided you have Half-Life, for free. Yes for free. The file however, is fairly large, but even so, it is probably worse to buy a game you can get for free than it is to leave a slow internet connection on all night so you can get this game. Basically, this game is great, and though it is worth the price, it is still available for free, so that price isn't worth it.
