It's like an addicting drug...

Counter-Strike has successfully taken all of my spare time away. I dream about it at times...yeah, scary. But the truth of the matter is that previous posts are way too true. The game is way too addictive and can cause marital problems, or it could help a marriage if you both play. If you don't want to buy it it is a free download at ... but getting it on CD may be alot faster since the game is about 80+ MB. Plus you get all the other good online games. You won't be playing much of those however, I promise. Counter-Strike is all you will ever need in an online shooter. I even gave up my Ultima Online subscription, I just can't stop playing this game. It's true teamplay and none of that mindless deathmatch garbage. BUY IT! or download it, just get it.

Simple & straightforward yet chock full of strategy! Sure u could download it for free somewhere but if u are like me & on a dial-up connection go ahead & shell out the few bucks!!

I don't normally play on-line or action games, but when I saw this I just sat down and started playing. IT was awesome.
Everyone should try it at least once.

I love Half-Life. This game is so much fun and was groundbreaking when it first hit the shelves. It got so many awards, including many Game of the Year awards to boast about. Counter-Strike, although it really doesn't have to do with the original Half-Life story, is great. This is really a one-of-a-kind game that has yet to be beat. You simply can't touch it. The game, with its modes of play varying from escape (Terrorists evading the counter-terrorists, basically a classic deathmatch) to the more complex such as hostage and assassination modes, provides a unique experience while being incredibly fun. If you have the high-definition realization pack and a nice graphics card running at a resolution of at least 1024x768, this game looks pretty good. Although the game has one minor shortcoming (Some of the weapons don't have real names and the models are flawed slightly), there is really nothing to complain about unless you want to nitpick. There are always servers running all sorts of maps on the internet, so you can always find a game. Be sure you have a broadband connection, though, because dialup doesn't do this game justice. This game is a MUST for a LAN party. Overall, this is a very, very fun game that is very open-ended and never plays the same twice. Even if you get owned by the hardcore gamers or you school the newbies, this is a very fun game that never grows boring.

I truly believe Counter-Strike is one of the greatest games ever made. With millions of people to play with, thousands of maps, great guns, complicated gameplay, and perfect controls.

This game will last you a long time. It takes awhile to become good at so there is always more to learn. Teamplay is great, the fun factor is amazing, and it is just a fun experience. However some people aren't to sportsman like and insist on using hacks which allow them to have advantages, hacks are not allowed in CS and you shouldn't use them. Others will just be jerks to you and say how much you suck or push you around.. If they don't respect you, don't respect them. There are other things people do which are just cheap such as spawn-killing on AWP maps.. which basically means you die before you get the chance to fight.

Counter-Strike (and most 3d online games) will not bare well if you have either a slow connection (56K or below) or an old computer. Tweaking to low settings will solve this, but it can only do so much. on my 2 year old computer I experience a lot of lag It is 500MHZ, 256MB, geforce4 MX420 (PCI) computer, and I am on DSL. Now If I play on a server with more than 10 players I have a lot of trouble with lag (slowdown). IF you know your computer is old and you don't want to spend more money on this game maybe you shouldn't buy counter-strike. You may find out that you want or need $$$ worth of computer parts to improve your game. when I had 56k I would hear sounds repeated over and over and freeze, next thing I was dead.The fact that people with newer computers and high speed connections have an advantage is kind of upsetting, but hey.

Tips for new players:
-as a new player (newb,newbie, noob, nub,n00b,n00bie) you will receive insults about being new to the game and it may discourage you, just keep trying.. Practice makes perfect.

-do not hold down on your fire button. many guns will shoot out of control if you don't shoot in small bursts of fire. It will increase your accuracy an damage.

-Aim for the chest or head. It kills a lot faster then shooting someone in the leg.

-Start off with 1 or 2 guns. It will make you good if you get to know one single gun.. I recommend the M4 and AK47 as they are great for long and close distance and do great damage quickly. However they are hard to control a gun such as the MP5 may be better suited for you seeing as your are new.. the gun wont fly everywhere when you hold down fire and it costs little, the damage is poor so aim for the head and chest. Other players should tell you about how to use guns.

-Use your ears. Headphones are a lot better then speakers. many people don't realize how many players use ears as a guide. It allows you to hear enemy's coming from all directions and identify them. knowing where your enemy is before they know where you are is very helpful.

-buy the kevlar or kevlar/helmet.. It will give you more time to live

-Practice, more important then anything. you will not get good if you don't try.

-dont play on servers for newbs. You wont improve much.

-If you are having lag and don't know what to do about it go online and find info on it.. Counter-strike.net has a good tech forum.. You can prevent a lot of slowdown with a few minor changes.

You would think that all my complaints would give a lower rating, but the fact remains that counter-strike is one of the best games out there.. Even being unfriendly to newbs, hacking, power hungry, and just being cheap can't take that away, these issues only occur sometimes anyway. Well worth the download or buy.

I always hear these things, mainly of the point that it's unrealistic, noone uses teamwork, people are too preoccupied with their stats, etc, etc. THAT may be true on many public servers, though there are quite a few that aren't filled with morons, and actually have people who play in a teamlike fashion, and complete their objective over killing off the enemy in the time given. I am one of those people who actually go for the objective. And actually, i am an admin at a server, and if a terrorist is last, and is camping out the round, then i will slay him and warn him to stay on task.
Onto another point- many people claim this to be so unrealistic, it may be true on points like the M249 being a slow shooter, very cumbersome, and has too good aim for standing up, and the fact that you die from 2 shots in the toe with the AWP- those are all unrealistic points, BUT if you think about it, how much fun would it be to have to unload 5 clips and a half to killt he enemy? *COUGH HALO COUGH* yes, i just insulted halo, because the enemies are too damn strong, it drives me crazy, along with the multiplayer being so annoying that you shoot the enemy with 3 shots from a sniper to kill...
And my final point is that there are people who aren't just preoccupied with their stats, there are servers dedicated to having fun- Yes, fun, on a counterstrike. They will have a whole slew of crazy maps, ways to make it even more insane, and things such as that. If you are interested in that try custom map servers.

ALL-IN-ALL
This game is at a peak of perfection- not even mentioning the huge amounts of customization involved in this game, from weapons to player models.

This game or mod should I say is great, got addicted right away. Fun on both sides, enact hostage takeovers, storm and defuse bombs, assassnaite or protect the V.I.P and more. Of course if you have Half Life already, just download it from cscentral.com . This game is worth the money. I have become a fan of this game like everyone else. Its completely worth buying it.
