I was quite impressed with the visuals of Yoshi's Story. But don't let Yoshi's superb graphics fool you. This is one of the easiest Nintendo 64 games available. There are twenty-four levels in all; each level requiring you to collect thirty pieces of fruit. Now this could be a challenging concept, except fruit pops up everywhere and flying Shy Guys practically shove it down your throat. Enemies generally are too stupid to be a real threat, and gaining more life is as easy as turning the system on. Controls are so refined to the point where it's almost impossible to screw up. -- In other words, Yoshi's Story is a game set more for younger audiences. It's too easy to be a real challenge to experienced gamers. However, Yoshi is one of the few Nintendo 64 titles reminiscence to old, 2D platforms. It's always proven a last, easy resort when everything else has become too frustrating. Kids will love this one. Older gamers may, too, but will never admit to it.

the game has great graphics, and good gameplay, good characters, and great levels. But, this game is not quite for people 11 years old and up. The game is a great game for little kids, its one of those non-violent, friendly games. Even the boss, that thing could hardly scare anything. So, if you have little kids(3-8) buy the game for them, they'll love it, especially since its short and difficult looking, that way, when your kids finish the game, they'll think they can master anything! Plus, it has good kid music and friendly cute looking worlds, and all those cute yoshis make such cute noices. I bought the game being the "good nintendo fan", also, if you collect nintendo character games(mario, zelda, donkey kong, etc.) you can't miss this one.
The game's okay

Ok, when Yoshi's Story was first annouced to be released for N64, I was very excited and it became one the my most anticipated N64 games. Was it because I like kiddy games? No. Back when I was playing the Super NES, there's a great game called Yoshi's Island. Yoshi's Island has 60+ levels, lots of different enemies, lots of interesting levels. It was so good that I played the whole game at least three times. Now Yoshi's Story is actually a SEQUEL to Yoshi's Island. I had expected much better levels, and hours upon hours of fun. But after I finally got the game, I was very disappointed. Yoshi's Story only has 24 levels in all and there's no bonus levels to play if you get a high score and the levels are too easy. You only beat 6 levels to beat the game. Yoshi's Island took me about 3 weeks to beat and Yoshi's Story only took me 2 hours! If you played Yoshi's Island and loved it, DO NOT expect Yoshi's Story to be like Yoshi's Island because it's no where as good as the SNES masterpiece. Unless you are an Yoshi fan and have to have this game, then get it. Otherwise just rent it and if you actually liked it then consider buying it.

This is a great game for small children. I was looking for something aimed at younger kids and this is perfect. My daughter has trouble with more difficult games and loses interest, but she loves Yoshi's story! I definately recommend it for younger children, but it is a bit boring for older kids and adults.
Cute and fun

These Yoshis are so cute. You pick what color Yoshi you want and then go through different levels eating fruits and avoiding dangers. I thought at first all there was to it was to eat 30 fruits and the level is over, not much of a challenge, then I realized you get more points according to what you eat... and the game saves your points automatically, with your name, so my son and I competed to get the best score, both on the entire story mode and on the trial page. Every level you complete ends up as a "sticker" on the trial page, so you can go straight to your favorite level if you like and try to beat the best score.
Yoshi's Story: sniffing out the truth

As you may have read, the general consensus is that Yoshi's Story is a fine 2D platformer for children to play, but offers little challenge for the rest of the market. I strongly disagree with this.
I have been an avid gamesplayer for nigh on 11 years, from the NES (Famicom) right through to the N64. I own virtually every Mario/Yoshi title, and Yoshi's Story is my favourite to date.
True, if a player just plunders through the game, it can be finished within an hour, two at most. But dedicated gamers will find themselves caught in the real groove. The hook in this game is to NURUTRE your Yoshi.
Different fruits are favoured/disfavoured by each Yoshi. A casual gamer who just wants another straightforward platformer will find such mushy sentiment ludicrous and down as many of any kind of fruit possible to finish the game. However, a devoted gamer will discover the joy in sniffing out and hunting down their Yoshi's favourite fruit.
All Yoshi's love melons, and to find all 30 in one course, as well as the three hearts needed to unlock each world, AND to discover the secret White and Black Yoshis, PLUS killing every shyguy to make Yoshi's happiness quota higher, not to mention finding power bees, and collecting every coin from every course to unlock a rumoured 'hidden' Yoshi, is a gargantuan task indeed. Of course, there a those who just won't care about all this. But to those few dedicated gamers, who, like me, appreciate the subtler side of computer entertainment, I urge you, BUY THIS GAME!
FYI, I got to the end credits in an hour. A year on, I'm still looking for all the secrets. And this is a gamer whos finished each and every Zelda game (excluding Majora's Mask) within six weeks, tops.
"Disappointing"?? No way!!

I wouldn't have submitted this review, epecially since almost all customer reviewers gave this game an appropriately high rating, but I am shocked, SHOCKED! by the negative "official" review that Amazon has placed at the top of the page. I couldn't disagree more strongly with the snide dismissal of Yoshi's bright and happy world, or the dis of the 2-D like side scrolling action of the game, which recalls classic video games from back in the day.
This is a WONDERFUL game for young and old alike. Needless to say, if your taste in video games runs to first person shooters and blood and gore this probably isn't your cuppa, but I was enraptured by the gorgeous graphics and beautiful music. In terms of graphics, music, and game play, this is the best product that I've seen for the N64. (The music in the early Mario family games produced for the N64 annoyed the heck out of me.) In "Yoshi's Story" Nintendo has recaptured the magic of its best games for the NES and SNES, only using the 64-bit system to its highest potential. True vintage happy smiley Nintendo!

We rented this game one weekend for our 5-year-old and she loved it so much we bought it. It's a game she can actually play and not get killed or kicked out within the first 30 seconds. She likes to have her father and I play the higher levels over and over again so she can watch and learn what to do. A nice feature is being able to play any level you choose without having to go through the lower levels first.

Like others have said, instead of having a true challenge to face, you have to put in the effort to keep yourself interested. This game has less than half of the levels compared to "Yoshi's Island", its predecessor. And the bosses are really easy to beat. But there is more.
This game is really babyish. The whole game is a storybook, and the story itself is about a "super happy tree" with a giant heart that the Yoshi's have to rescue. Then in the levels, Yoshi has to eat 30 fruit (which is really easy), but you have to find 3 smiling hearts and when you beat each world a giant smiling heart pops out. Also the music is really corny. The predecessor of this game, "Yoshi's Island", was action packed, had 54 levels, and it applied to all ages. This game should only be played by kids 7 years old and under. If you are older and you buy it, just be in for a shock when you see all of the "happy hearts".
Another thing-- the art design of the game really stinks. This is becuase the game was supposed to look like a storybook, but the game makers failed miserably. For example, sometimes the backround will look like someone's jeans, the backround of caves looks like newspapers, and the backround of some jungles looks like a couch-- not realistic at all. When you get down to 5 fruits, a box will pop up and it will say "5 more fruits to make the Yoshis grow happier." And when the page turns from world to world, the box says "the page turned and the Yoshis grew happier." I mean, what kind of game would say that? For power, you have a smiling sunflower with petals in the top-left corner. Overall, this is a relly corny game, and in you are above 7, you shouldn't get this game. In this game, Yoshi is made out to look like a babyish cute creature. Hopefully in the future there will be a Yoshi game worth playing. I'd expect more of a Yoshi game. This game was obviously made in a rush-- effort was not put into this game.
Fun for me.

I was happy that a Yoshi game came out so I bought it. Most people don't like the music or gameplay but I do. I think it was kind of neat for the to make the enviorment look like cardboard. It's also nice that you can choose what color Yoshi you want. That's my opinion.
