I just wish the CD requirement wasn't there!

So far, the only problem I have with this game is that Microsoft requires you to have the CD(s) physically in the drive(s) while you're playing it, even if you did a full install. I'm lucky I already had two disk drives; it wouldn't go when I tried to play with just the blue (main?) disk in my CD drive. I had to put the green (secondary?) disk in my DVD drive. If my experience is the same for everyone, someone with only one disk drive would be screwed!

According to Microsoft's support site, all the Zoo Tycoon versions require that you have the CD(s) in your drive(s) during play, as do many other Microsoft games. I know why they require it (piracy), and considering all the other great things about this game, it's probably not that big a deal. Call me a whiner! It just annoys me that I have to keep taking the CDs in and out all the time. Besides, can you say scratches and pings in the disks? I hate not being able to keep my program CDs pristine in their pockets after installation.

Anyway, the CD requirement is my big beef. If you don't have two drives in your PC, don't get this game till you do -- you probably won't be able to play it without the second drive!

A failure of a zoo tycoon

How can this game possibly be fun? There are far more cons than pros. Let's start with the only 2 pros:

-Informative about animals and educational

-Many objects and animals to choose from to add to your zoo, inside the exhibits and out

Now, let's take a look at these cons:

-Everytime you look, an animal has a problem. Just because of one problem, they'll go all 'depressed'. How pathetic.

-Everything you do is wrong. 'Your zoo has no money.' 'Dromedary camel is not happy.' 'Guests do not seem to like your zoo.' I tried and tried again, but you'd have to be a proffesional at age 15 or above to actually have fun. This should be rated T for teen, just because it's so hard.

-Game provides few tips to help you. The next time someone tells you, "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what to give to an animal, and what not to!" You truthfully can reply, "Yes it does!"

-Guests come right when the zoo opens, so you have to mad-dash around the zoo to create exhibits. What does this game like to do, rush you instead of letting you have fun?

-EVERY animal must be happy, or ALL the guests will be angry.

-The guests aren't as interested in dinosaurs as you'd think they would be. Come on, a dinosaur. Do you see that everyday? Are the guests EVER satisfied?

Nope. So don't buy this, save your money, time, and patience, because you'll forever lose it with this game. It's just like going to school: It's just educational, and there is no fun involved, so you'll probably forget all the things you've learned because you had no fun in learning it.

Great Game!

This is the best game I have ever played! I play it every day! It is so much fun to make cages for the animals you bought! Buy this and you won't regret it!

Be careful, it's addicting...

This is an excellent program. Combining the first three releases, Zoo Tycoon, Dinosaur Digs, and Marine Mania, the Complete Collection has created a program that amazes me every day. My [young]son is completely hooked. Not that this program is designed for a 5 year old - you must pay attention to so many details (believe me the designers at Microsoft certainly seem to have!) - even Santa has been included! My son has learned so much about the habitats of his favorite animals, and when he goes to bed, I get to continue my zoo, which is located...on the moon! Great program, wonderful details. Highly recommended!

A Must Buy

I bugged my dad into getting this after I got all the trial versions, and it was AMAZING! Not only can you adopt animals, but you can also adopt dionsaurs and other prehistoric andimals and marine animals. There are a lot of fansites with downloads for this game (example: http://www.zklounge.com) that users created! People obviously put a lot of time to create these animals and they also create hacks (things that make the game just a LITTLE easier; ex. unlocking things at the very begining at the game) and objects. The only reason I rated this 4 stars is for some unknown reason, the game crashed and now I can only use disc 1 :-(. (But it's STILL fun!)

Zoo Tycoon is an amazing game. You can build a zoo with some of your favorite animals such as, tigers, lions, and bears! You can also play senarios and do alot more! If you like going to zoos then why not manage a zoo? Your zoo could be one of the best zoos ever! Just be careful... dont let the animals loose or you will loose alot of guests and the zoo will go hectic! Good luck playin Zoo Tycoon! Remember: Do what you want!

The best game ever!

After the first few times, this game was easy and a snap to play. If you really want to, you can see lions shake people, and you actually learn a lot. It's a very cool game. If anyone says anything bad about this game, that's because they played it wrong and didn't read the instructions. It's really cool seeing the baby animals swimming around. The shows are really fun to do. Even the tutorials are fun.

Somewhat of a disappointment

A very good game. Educational. My one and only disappointment is that it can be very difficult and timeconsuming to get the exibits just right. I think that takes a lot away from the game. I am half-way through the game and am now stuck because I can't get one of my exibits to where my animals are happy. I have tried everything. I started playing about 8 months ago and can't bring myself to get back to it.

My two boys ages 12 and 10 have enjoyed playing Zoo Tycoon. I don't feel as if they are completely wasting their time with this game as they are learning how to set up a zoo. Very educational.

I ordered this game from Amazon and it arrived in time for Labor Day weekend. I played for 13 straight hours. Worked on my Zoo all day. And then started a new Zoo.

I finally got the hang of setting up the Marine Exhibit tanks and show tanks. Lots of nifty show toys for the dolphins and orcas.

Lots of gift shops, snack stands, restaurants, and special exhibits like the Primate exhibit. The special exhibits are a bonus, cause you just buy them, less work and maintenance than the Zoo pens, of course, not as much fun to create either.

The animals have happiness meters. If you make them happy enough, they'll start having babies. Some of them get out of hand, like the Manta Rays and Flamingoes. You can sell the babies, too, some of the animals get sad faces when you sell their baby.

The dinosaur exhibit was hard work to make them happy, whew. They start out as eggs, then they have a teenager phase, then in a third stage, become fully grown adults. They have a tendency to trample trees in their penn down to rubble, then start complaining about the rubble. Gotta keep those dinosaurs happy! If they escape, they'll start eating your zoo visitors.

A couple of my flamingoes escaped and wandered into the saltwater croc penn, that was a close call.

The Zoo visitors have meters, too. You can see if they're happy, hungry, tired, or thirsty.

I had a lot of work to do yesterday, but I spent the WHOLE day playing Zoo Tycoon. If you need a totally engrossing game to take your mind off your worries, this a great game for it.

Good luck with your Zoo!

addendum:
Well, after several weekends of playing ZT, I learned some tricks.

The buildings like 'Tropical Aquarium' let you change the exhibit theme, click on it, then click the middle button on the right side menu. The pricier exhibits raise the plus ratings for adults and children. The options become available after you fund research.

The 'boat rental shack' has a few different boat types. The swan boats cost more to upkeep, but it's more fun to watch them.

I was in the building tab looking at fountains. All of a sudden a Halloween pumpkin showed up to use in a display for zoo visitors. It disappeared very quick, so, nab it as soon as you see it.

Regards,
Elf Princess
