I know I will get blasted for this

The only reason this game gets one star instead of two is because of the hype. I hate hype, especially when it pushes a product so undeserving as this. I realize many people, ESPECIALLY people new to computers and this genre of game, like Half-Life. I also know that most of the experienced gamers and computer nerds I know don't like this game. Could there be something to this?

First of all, the A.I. in this game is no better than Quake II or almost any other FPS. It has been praised by many magazines, including PC Gamer. But the fact is, the A.I. is still A.I. and therefore is still dumb. And I have a feeling it is not going to get smarter for years.

Second, the atmosphere in Half-Life is too cheerful. Now, I'm not saying it's happy, but when you are playing it, you just get that feeling that these aliens don't really hate you. Most of this is do to the brightness of the game, but the rest is just due to the monsters themselves. Id Software had this aspect of the game nailed down perfectly in Quake I, which is now what I compare all single player games to.

Anyway, I have said what I think, and no doubt I will return to this site in a few days to find 2 of 73 people found this review to be helpful. If you want to buy into the hype, get Half-Life. If not, save your money, because a quality single player FPS will be released... eventually.

A landmark; 'nuff said

It says something about a video game when you don't consider it a game so much as an experience. Half-Life qualifies as one of those games.
If you don't believe me, pop in the Half-Life CD. Play the first level, which doesn't even possess any gunplay. Listen to the story. Hooked yet? Believe me, you will be.
The graphics are excellent, the sound is well-defined, the story is compelling, and the action is intense. In Half-Life, almost every enemy character - be it a headcrab, soldier, or other monstrosity - has its own unique ability. By the time you reach soldiers in the game, you are used to dealing with one-note aliens. When the soldiers start using teamwork and intelligence to flush you out, your playing style will have to altar drastically to survive.
That element alone is what makes the Half-Life single player experience special. However, the exemplary multi-player mode only adds to the fun, and adds that office space diversion feel. My personal favorite character in the multi-player mode (which comes complete with internet link-up and all your usual nifty LAN options) is the Heavy Weapons Guy, which involves absolutely no finesse and less strategy to dominate other players.
Simply put, a must-have.

Popularity does not imply quality, people...

Even when this game first came out, it was fairly mediocre. Let's move on, shall we? There are many, many games that topple Half Life and Counter Strike released since 1998.

Contrary to what the Amazon editorial had to say about this game, Half Life is not the bloodiest (Soldier of Fortune), is not the smartest (No One Lives Forever), and is not the scariest (System Shock 2 or Clive Barker's Undying).

Half Life is a hypefest.

Don't buy this for anyone you want to spend time with!

This must be an intriguing game... ever since I bought it for my 38-yr old husband, I haven't had access to him or the computer.

Still Is the best game Evar

Many of you know this game, from the publicity it got from Counterstrike. Many of you counterstrike player's might not know of this game. But you should, this game back when it was released (1998) was ahead of its time, it introduced the puzzle element it FPS games, the cinematic feeling you got when you play the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist working at the Black Mesa Anomalous Materials Research Center. If you haven't yet bought this game or haven't yet even tried it. It is definately a game you should have on your shelve at home. I have been seeing reviews right here on this sight saying that the graphics are dated, well duh... they are the game is 5 years old, and still kicking, with a multiplayer gaming community that is larger than Quake 3, Unreal Tournament 2003, & Battlefield 1942 combined. And is still growing. This game is a part of history, if you want to be involved in this history than I suggest you buy this game. This game has by far the most modifications out for it than any other game out there, with striving mod community's such as SvenCoop, Natural Selection, Science & Industry, & the yet to be released Half-life Rally.

I also noticed some reviewers saying the game is really buggy, or people cheat alot. That is true the game can be buggy at times, and people do cheat, but there is no way of avoiding that in any game. VALVe has tried their hardest to stop the cheating with their VALVe anit-cheat technology. They have also released many patches, from the start to fix most of the bugs.

I end my spiel right here saying please buy this game and come join the ever growing community of Half-life. Who knows maybe I'll see one of you in-game. If you do see me, dont mind to say hi, most people that play are nice.

An aging game, yet still worth the buy!

I just bought the game a few days ago, and I gotta be fair. This game was released in 1998, and it shows the age. The graphics are pretty pixely, there's no vehicle support and the voices sound like a low recording quality MP3.
But amazingly, this is the best game that I've ever played, and I've played a lot of games. This may be an old game, but it's incredibley well designed. Nothing is ever repetive in this game. As soon as you've gotten used to a certain type of enemy, situation, or weapon, the game throws something completly new and exciting at you. For a video game the story is great, the sound (except for the voices) is excellent and I assure that you'll completely forget the poor graphics because you'll be so emerged in the game universe. Before you buy try out the demo and you can see for yourself. Download the demo from a gaming site such as gamespot.com. I hope this helped you.

This game's cool.

I like it how some people just mention what's bad about this game, but never mention what's good in it. Notice that the 1-star reviewers are mostly morons, like this flooding "This game sucks" guy. Also notice that a lot of people complain about the pixelled graphics. Here's a newsflash: You're all retarded and know zero to nothing about computers. How about going to the options and run the game in Direct 3D? How hard is that? Why can't you guys figure this out by yourselves? Is is because you're all stupid? I guess so.

There's also this guy who complained about the "traps". Well, I guess you're some 10 years old who shouldn't play this game in the first place. What a shame. This is by far the stupidest reason I've ever read to hate a game. Oh well. You've also complained about the bugs. I have a tip for you little boy, download the latest patch to prevent these bugs from occuring(Except for maybe one or two bugs here and there. But come on, are you really going to hate this game just for one bug?).

And for all the stupid people who complain about the controls, here's a newsflash: You can customize your own controls in the options. Pretty amazing, isn't it?

Oh and also:

" There is almost no action, its not difficult, the controls are horrible, and its easy. I will never buy another Sierra game in my life."

You could set the difficulty level to "hard", and the game isn't by Seirra, it's made by Valve. Seirra only published it. Way to go in the stupidity there, retard.

"This game bills itself as an action game...well good luck finding any action. I hope you enjoy finding your way around mazes, searching for buttons, climbing insanely long (and easy to fall off) ladders, and fighting the ugre to simply turn this garbage off and delete it from your system."

Someone has mistaken this game for Doom. Oh wells.

I've seen many stupid people on the internet, but the 1-star reviewers of this game take the cake. You're all morons, and if I had any respect for you, I would've just lost it.

The Best Game Ever.

The only people who should give this one or two stars are simply too stupid to play it (Eg, I want brawn, not brain! I couldn't figure our how to beat the first boss, so it must suck.)

Kind of overrated

Probably like a lot of other people, I saw all the rave reviews about this game so I decided to buy it. I paid 20 dollars for this game and I think thats about the most this game is worth. The story line of this game is pretty good and so are the graphics for its time. What is less than perfect are the controls. Your character moves way too fast. Say you are going down the stairs. If you press forward and release, your character will keep on going down the stairs by himself. In tight and tricky areas this perpetual sprinting mode you are in becomes annoying.
This game is comparable to Quake 2 in depth and development but with slightly more details in the graphics. However, the way the screen is rendered, the 3D environment is not as well done as Quake 2. As a result if I play this game with my eyes too close to my monitor, I get motion sickness from the jerkiness from the screen. I never had this problem with any Quake games.
If you enjoyed the Quake 2 series and would like another game of its type to keep you occupied until DOOM 3 comes out give this game a try. Just keep in mind that all those game of the year awards are a bit exaggerated. After my experience with this game however, I do not plan to buy Half-Life 2 when it comes out this year.

Wow!

This was the most fun, intense, and amazing first-person game I have ever played! I would recomend this game to everybody who can "shoot" and who can think. This game does invole some minor thinking but can be solved in a reaonable amount of time. I cannot stress enough how excellent this game is. Plus with the Game of the Year Edition, it comes with Worldcraft 2.0 where you can design and play home-made levels. It's neat but confusing. Some parts can be sickening but most everbody can deal with it. If a younger child wants to play their is a "gore lock" where it cuts out the gore. How much, that I don't know but it's there to be used.
