This game is too good to go away!

Half-Life seems to have been around forever, but it's still as popular as it was when it first graced us with a frenzy of action. Nothing against Quake, Doom, and Duke, but Valve really upped the ante for FPS games.

Quake is just a shoot fest, that doesn't offer much enjoyment in the single player mode outside of practice for multiplayer. Half-Life however, involves problem solving and a knack for pressing the F6 key on a regular basis. (quick save) This is the only game I have that can spook me. I get so into the stage, sneaking around and all, when a baddie pops out, I've been known to develop a nervous tick.

The greatness of this game is only partially realized in single player mode. Multiplayer is where Half-Life truly shines. With different levels that the singleplayer mode and a slew of downloadable mods, this is the best multiplayer thing going. Counterstrike, TFC, player skins, weapons, bots, etc... make this game seem to never run out of new things to do.

Nothing beats mulitplayer on a LAN with this game. My roommates and I have wasted many an hour blowing each other up, and setting up traps to crossbow people in. If you like a good single player game, love multiplayer action, and don't have this yet... What cave have you been livin' in? Get with it man!

Game of the Year is an understatement.......

When I saw this game sitting on the shelf and it had "Game of the Year" written on the box I thought..."How good could it be??" So instead of researching it like I normally would have....I went out on a leap of faith and decided to go ahead and try this game out. Like the title says "Game of the Year is an understatement..." This game is a visual stunner as well as strategy wise. It is one of if not the best first person shooter available.....This game is absolutely amazing. If you're someone who likes to play first person shooter games then the developer of this game had you in mind while writing it...because it is absolutely amazing. Multiplay is awesome as well....even if you don't like first person shooters, you should give this one a try......it's GREAT!

This is the best game I have ever played!!

I gave Half-Life 5 stars because its the kind of game people want to play. Its not one of these 2 hour games that are boring, its more like a game that takes about a week if you know what your doing. Its also very realistic, like the guns and other stuff. When I just turn a corner in the game, im afraid what will happen to me, because it feels like your really are Gorden Freeman. My dad doesn't like video games, but when I showed him Half-Life, he just sat in my chair and started playing it. It also has a great storyline. I have played Half-Life and Half-Life Opossing Force, and from what I have seen, they can probably make about 15 Half-Lifes, just in the same story line, Like in Half-Life, your Gorden Freeman, in Opossing Force, our tthe military, in Blue Shift, your the securty gaurds, and they can make more like the snipers trying to kill the military, the scientists, the aliens, and alot more. If you see this game in a store, or has heard about it from somebody, I suggest you buy it. Alot of people are missing out in the best game of the year!

More than that...

I had heard alot of praise for Half-Life, but not being much of a fan of FPS, I never paid much attention. But, after a while, I finally borrowed it from a friend.

And was blown away...

The story is simple. You take the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist at the Black Mesa Compound. You're involved in some pretty heavy experiments, when one goes wrong. Pretty soon you find yourself weilding shotguns, pistols, (crowbars), and even alien weapons battling your way through legions of alien soldiers, and even US Marines, who want you dead. All the way to the final battle with this creature who would've given Kefka a run for his money (Final Fantasy VI)!

The graphics aren't the best, but they don't need to be. Gameplay, and replayability more than makes up for it.

When I finally beat Nihilanth (I think that's how it's spelled) I took a deep breath, and journeyed here to see what others have said about this truly wonderful game.

And I agree. Half-Life deserves way more than five measly stars.

In my opinion, from a company that hasn't released a good game since King's Quest, Sierra and Valve have done a good, nay, a great job.

can you say...sequel...

Without a doubt, the greatest action game ever.

I was not a big fan of action games before I bought Half-Life. Almost immediately after starting it up for the very first time I fell in love with this game. It is simply the best. Better than all the rest. You play the role of scientist, Gordon Freeman, who works at a secret testing facility called Black Mesa. As the story unfolds aliens, and eventually the military, invade the Black Mesa facility. It is up to you, and a few of your surviving scientist compadres to rid the complex of the unwelcomed visitors and escape with your life.

There are many different weapons at your dispose and a bunch of aliens and military enemies to gun down. My favorite being the headcrabs. The game is also quite suspenseful, and startled me on more than one occasion. Team Fortess Classic that ships with the Game of the Year Edition is good if you have high speed internet access. If not, you probably won't use it. The Black Mesa complex is also VERY nice in design. It is quite a sight to walk across a board, get halfway across, look down, and see nothing but a 500 foot ravine below you.

There are a few minor flaws in the game however. One being in Gordon's trip to the alien planet. Unless you have a a high end machine (Pentium III 700mhz or higher) it may be a bit slow, or choppy. Also, there are not the many different skin types of NPC's. Probably around 4 or 5. Finally, the end of the game some people may find a little weak. Or, the optimistic person may view it as leaving the game open for the expansion pack (Half-Life: Opposing Force) That's basically all my complaints. They are very minor however, and I recommend this game without reservation to anyone interested in computer gaming.

best.game.ever.

half life has a good story, and awesome graphics. its not some stupid kill-everything-that-moves game and resourcefullness and a keen eye are necessary to find broken paths and secrets. HARD! badguys are fast and powerful. My favorite feature- how intense and creepy it is! crawling down a shaft you can hear rodents and footsteps , and if its dark a flashlight casts an incredible effect in corners; you enter a vent and, not thinkinking about light, a monster snaps out of the dark and scares the crap out of you!

Hands down, best fps of our time.

I don't care what you say, this is the best First Person Shooter of its time. If anyone ever gives this game less than five stars, its because they just bought the game and they think the games engine is a little dated. Ignore them, they probably didn't know that the game came out in 1998, and back then, it was ahead of its time.

If you want a game that doesn't have you searching for bobbing weapons and powerups in the middle of a room, and an almost cinematic feel to it, by all means buy this game. Real life weapons are included in this game, such as the Glock 22, .357 Magnum, MP5 Navy with a built in grenade launcher, and lots more.

Upon buying this game, you will not only get the Half-Life game, but access to hundreds of mods on the internet. All kinds of mods exist, and a lot of them are very addicting in fun. Some are meant to be serious, but others will make you laugh out loud. But Counter-Strike is the best one of all. Buy this game. Have fun with it. Enjoy it.

Half-Life Heresy

Most critics insist that Half-Life is the best game ever, but I must disagree. I will say that it has perhaps the best gameplay of any shooter, but it does have its drawbacks.

One of the best traits of half-life is that although it has much the same gameplay as any other shooter, it seems to have done it exceptionally well. Like most shooters you walk, run, climb, jump, crawl, and shoot, of course, but in Half-life it's so utterly engaging. I'm not sure why, but I believe the great gameplay is a result of the intuitive nature of the puzzles and combat. You can look around and say: "Ah ha! That's the way." And in most cases you are right giving you a satisfying feeling of knowing that you used your brain well. However, as another reviewer noted, in some cases you get nailed with a "gotcha," you die, and it's time to gawk at the ol' loading screen. Nevertheless, it's not that hard after you play the game for a while, and who doesn't want a challenge?

The weapons are average and include the standard machine gun, shotgun, and pistols along with grenades and other weapons you pick up along the way. You can also use guns set on turrets. All your weapons pack a punch, and you shouldn't be dissatisfied with any of them.

Enemies include monsters and "grunts." They're decent looking, and the grunts have good AI. Some of the "boss" monsters need to be killed with special weapons that you fire from pressing a button on a wall. It's very satisfying to see one of the big monsters finally go down.

The sound is exceptional except for the voices of the NPCs. I'm not sure why their voices are distorted. It might be a bug.

Speaking of bugs, this edition of Half-life has a bug that causes you to stick to some of the lifts which can be very annoying. Sierra should have fixed this bug by now. I used cheat codes to get around this problem, however.

As for cheat codes, use them! As difficult as this game can be, you can finish it using these codes, but try the game without them at first, of course.

What really drags this game down is the graphics. Although they aren't poor, they aren't that great either. In some of the levels the design is so plain and smooth I feel like I'm in a tin can. This problem gets in the way of Half-Life being a truly great game.

To sum it up, I'd say Half-Life is a good, solid shooter. It can be so absorbing, but it won't wow you either. And such an opinion will get me in trouble with all those rabid Half-Life fans, no doubt!

HAlf-Life is one of the most engenious games ever thought up. It combines the shoot-em up gorey scenes with the ingenuity of a deciceve puzzle. scene after scene of high paced action and mind teasers will make the player go on for ever. my father once played all night without sleep- and still didn't win.

This game rules. I don't think I've ever had so much fun beating things with a crowbar. This game is also scary. What makes it scary is the perspective. In all the Resident Evils out there, the enemies lunge, jump, or shoot at a few thousand pixels on the screen. In Half-Life, they're after YOU. I have fond memories of crawling through a pitch black air shaft, my flashlight energy all but gone, 40% health, and having a bug-thing with claws jump at you from around the corner. Not for the feint of heart, but worth every penny.
