Star Trek: Starfleet Command II: Orion Pirates Review

Overall, this game was a meduim on the scale. One big plus is that it doesn't require the original Star Trek: Startfleet Command II to run. But, the graphics were poor, and the lack of a substantial storyline had a major inpact. Also, there were many variations on ship classes. It gets confusing, remembering which ship you bought when.
If I had a choice, I would use my money on the next game up, Star Trek: Starfleet Command III. It removes most of the flaws mentioned above, and it has a very good replay value. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to email me at cloudmouse@gmail.com. Thank you!

I played this game ad infnitum; the gameplay and graphics are great, although I wish that the economic model wasn't so stingy with the X-Generation ships. I found that an XCA or XCB was more than a match for just about any battleship. The Romulan, Gorn and Hydran X-ships were the best (the Romulan and Gorn varients tended to copy each other), while I found the ISC to be good in concept, but underpowered, the Mirak and Klingon just okay, the Federation variants a bit hard to master - but well worth the effort - and the Lyran X-varients decidedly inferior. The game tended to crash if you were playing either as a part of the pirate cartels or against them, and if you were playing as the Lyrans and used your ESG's to ram, the game would generate an aural artifact that would continue well after the end of the scenrio. Still, all in all, a better game than SFC II due to the inclusion of the X-Ships.

When I first heard that activision was making a sequel to Armada 1 I was overjoyed. Because though Armada 1 is a great game there are so many things that could be better. The main thing was the graphics. They were good for the time but they could have been better. In Armada 2 the graphics are indeed superior. Also the game field is in full 3D unlike Armada 1 in which it was 3D on a 2D plane. In this version there are 6 playable races instead of the original 4 and each of the 3 campaigns has 10 mission instead of the original 4. I could go on like this all day but I want to play the game! It is well worth the money and I recommend it fully to any Star Trek or RTS gaming fan.

...

It took me about 3 hours to understand that that was it, this WAS the game, and I was not going to get anything else. By that time my eyes were closing and I was falling asleep.

This is what you do in the game - you listen to endless and pointless conversations directing you to do something, you go and do it, and when all of a sudden time comes to shoot, you shoot and run and shoot and run and turn and shoot and run and shoot and run and shoot and turn and run and shoot and run and run and run and shoot and shoot and shoot and turn and run.

This game cannot be called strategic, because you are totally limited in choices, it cannot be called arcade because it is not only slow, there is no word in the language to say how slow it is. ...

A fun wast of time

This game consists of several linked but unrelated puzzle stages with some bref space combat in between. What I mean by linked but unrelated is that while completion and exploration of each of the puzzle stages helps to further the plot, what you do in one stage dose not nessicarly affect what happens in any of the later stages, nor do any of the items that you may happen to pick up transfer from one stage to the next. While it was fun to play a game involving the original cast, and it dose have some replayabity with alternate outcomes and extra points you can pick up, it is not for everybody.

It's a little noisy...

It's a lot of fun except for the noise problem. We aren't able to play this game for more than 20 minutes without the sound going birzerkers! A horrible sound starts that covers all the dialogue. I have tried multiple times to get support from the vendor, but can't get through. If I could find the fix for this problem, I'd rate the game at 5 stars. Maybe it's because it's an old game and we have a new PC.

Reasonable game

After getting this game, I realeased this game was not like the original. It seem that Armada 2 is more for resource gathering than starategy. They game's graphics are quite goodbut, they seemed to concentrate on the gathering of resoruces. Also, many of the ships are higly expendable. In Armada 1 losing a soverign class ship, was a big loss, now you can shrug it off and build more. Also, I didn't like the fact that they limit the amount of officers you can have. I loved to bring in a enoumous armada and wipe out the enemy, but here, it just seems that once you have a certian amount of vessels, you need to stop, I didn't like that. The basic strategy seems to be, get control of all the moons and planets on the map, and then just wait until u can make a fleet of vessels and move into the main base. I have also found that i seem to be losing interest once i begin playing, unlike the original. Also, what the heck happened to the opening movie, it's horrible. I gave this 3stars because after playing it, u slowly start to get into it, but it takes a lot of time., at least it doesn't take forever to install, and it doen't have too many bugs

Make it so....

I played the demo for the past few days and it was very enjoyable. This is the only game of the franchise where you can act like a true Captain and sit back barking orders to your crew. The interface looks good and functions very well. The graphics are crisp and the voices are very well done. I'll have to reserve final judgment until I get the full version (it better not have a lot of bugs!).

After your Captain is killed you (the first officer) is promoted to Captain. It's your job to discover why your beloved captain was killed and solve mysteries along the way. There are plenty of battles included to keep your chief engineer busy, you tactical officer stressed and your new first officer wondering if its not to late for her to transfer off your ship.

The game plays out like a good episode from The Next Generation series.

Note, I'm giving the DEMO 4 Stars.
