It started off well

I played this game from beta up until May of 2003. You'd think that after being in retail for 7 months that things would have been going great. Unfortunately the opposite holds true. With every patch added the chat system became worse and worse. The lag (from reports of those in my guild) was astonishingly bad. The devs whacked us with the 'nerf' bat under the guise of 'balancing' so many times that my level 50 mage was a complete waste of time.

I have watched the boards for patch notes and the like to see if the game was going to get better and it's not. The implementation of useless items/skills is making everything worse.

I so hoped I would play this game for years. However, it has been ruined and the fan base has deserted. What a shame.

Awsome game

This game is stunning. The game has a few balance issues but are being corrected. I will say that people who object to this game in previous reviews have no clue. The game is a blast and I can't stop playing it. There are plenty of people playing it and the most fun is fellowing on Linvak. It is very difficult to survive there.

I recommend buying this game ASAP.

Beautiful, Fun, Interesting, Mysterious, Amazing.....

I have played Asherons Call 1 for 2 years and after my wonderful experience with it I bought Asherons Call 2. After several hours of playing it I was lost, confused, and didn't know much about the game. When I asked the admin for help they helped me very quickly and helpfully and I was having fun.

This game is very different from AC1, it has different graphics, different gameplay, and different items. Many of the towns have no NPCs and that would make you think they are deserted but now with item crafting there really is no need for NPCs, most towns if not all have many different workshops and forges and each one has around 10 people standing next to it, usually trading and crafting.

Many people say that this game has no storyline but yes it does have a story, it has a great story. The story is layed out in a BIG quest made up of vaults. Vaults are mysterious dungeons that unlock the secrets of what happened to Dereth. There are over 20 vaults and when you complete each vault it unlocks a little cinematic clip. I haven't completed every vault yet but im on my 6th one and it's great.

The music in Asherons Call 2 is amazing. Its not battle music like in Dark Age of Camelot but instead it's soothing music that makes you feel like you are in dreamland..... until a giant Tyrant kills you. The sounds are also amazing, from the sound of monsters to the sound of a Tumerok(one of the three races in Asherons Call 2) playing a drum, its all good.

The crafting system is very easy and powerful. You can make dyes, make armor, make weapons, make tools, and make some other stuff. Usually crafted items are much better than looted items. Almost everyone crafts and many of those people are very nice and would gladly craft you an item if you are new.

The combat system is like the Dark Age of Camelot combat system but a bit better. The way you raise skills is awesome, it's like the skill tree in Diablo 2 but you can also untrain skills so it can be impossible for you to be gimped. The skills are all equally balanced despite what other people say. The three races which are Human, Lugian, and Tumerok are also equally balanced.

The graphics are of course amazing even on low quality.... so enough said about that. The bugs and glitches are about the same as in Dark Age of Camelot now so enough said about that also.

There are 2 types of player versus player combat. The first one is Free For All which is the one like in Asherons Call and Everquest. The other type of player versus player is Kingdom vs. Kingdom which is basically like RvR from Dark Age of Camelot but the Kingdoms aren't based on location, they are not based on race or class, and there are no level requirements to go out on the battlefield and compete in massive team combat. Kingdoms also battle for wealth such as minerals and stuff.

One of the most exciting things about AC2 that make you keep coming back for more are the monthly patches, also known as episodes. Each monthly patch changes the bad things and adds good things, they can change the whole game into how the majority of players like it just like they changed AC1. The episodes also add new quests, vaults, items, monsters, etc.

I hope my review helps and I hope it changes your mind about this game.

Confessions of a beta tester

Okey, I'm also beta testing this game.. I've also both beta'd and played Dark Ages of Camelot, I've done a little Everquest and AC1, and also beta'd the new westwood MMORG 'Earth and Beyond'.

I guess the first question anyone is going to ask is 'So, how does this game differ from any of the others out there?', and the good news is that it DOES differ - and I think favourably so.

Unlike the other games there are no NPC's, not one.. if you see something moving it's either a monster you can kill, or a real person. This does feel kinda wierd at first, but you get used to it :).
Instead the back story is revealed by cutscenes revealed as you complete vaults (Vaults are different from dungeons in that you get no XP from the monsters in them except the big bad, but you'll get phat loot or a cutscene at the end instead).
If you need weapons or armor, then you can either pick stuff up from monster drops, you can make your own (the monster drops providing materials you can use for this, or alternaivly you can go mine stuff), or you can buy it from another player.

Skill wise it's much more dynamic and varied than either of E&B and DAOC, there are skill trees akin to Diablo where you can go down different paths, put different amounts of points into each skill, etc.. this should help make each char more unique

Oh, yeah.. and graphically? It's the only game thus far that has made me climb a hill or mountain -just- to look at the view, all I can say is 'wow!'.

Sure, the game has it's bad points.. some of the balance stuff needs tweaking for example, the quests more varied perhaps.. It likes a chunky machine to do the best detail rates, -but- it's still early days.. DAOC's taken over a year to get to where it is today don't forget.

My feeling is that AC2 has a heck of a strong foundation and even if not bought today should be one you watch out for in the coming months.

the most beautiful MMP available to date

No doubt about it here, the graphics of this game are far and away the most beautiful the MMP community has ever seen. I somehow managed to get into the beta on this and if like me your typically intimidated and don't know what to do in MMPs this is a great game to start with. Choices are very clear and its very difficult to create a character you can't use. Did I mention the graphics are amazing? There are people griping about having to turn down the graphics to run everything smoothly, but from what the developers said as hardware gets better the game will look even better, so 2 years from now when people are still playing this game will still look cutting edge!

Aside from primo graphics, this game has fantastic gameplay. Turbine has proven itself unique with its monthly content updates, which makes for a constant new game experience. The open endedness of the engine makes for exciting future possibilities.

The combat model is new and fun, the Kingdom vs. Kingdom experience is very interesting, and the craft system is the best I've seen.

I'm very much looking forward to its release!

Expecting a lot of fun

The game is bilt "around" mouth patches, everything will be very easy to "modulate" for devellopers. So even if the "base" seems a little poor, i expect a lot of fun in AC2

fun game, lots of promise

Turbine and MS have hit a home run with AC2. It's already very stable and fun in beta, and we can expect lots of content, quests, and good ol' monster killing in the months to come. Asherons Call 2 will be a new game every month.

Good but is it new

I played AC2 beta after playing Asherons Call, Dark Age of Camelot and Anarchy On-Line. I was expected a lot of new expierences. The graphics were brilliant and yes you can build new towns/buildings. But alas apart from that nothing much has really changed. It is still the point and click combat of the previous menchioned game, so nothing new there. So it cuts down the thrill of the combat which you find in first person shooters. It's more money that AC1 and most people I know have said they will not bother with AC2 and go back to Asherons Call due to it costing less, for pretty much the same experience. But I recogmend looking at a game called Plantet side if you are into on-line gameing and are looking for something with a bit more that point and click.
