A lot of people describe this game a mediocre or 'needs some work'. Well, the game received 'some work' from the Developers from Turbine. Lots of it. Classes are almost balanced now, content is coming in in big chunks (EVERY MONTH!), UI changes, crafting system is being updated. Player vs Player is being tweaked etc. etc. This game keeps getting better and better.
I've been playing it since Beta and I've enjoyed every minute (well, almost every minute) of it. The changes made are for the most part good ones. And since there's a 15 day FREE trial (see www.ac2insider.com) you can give it a go without paying. That's actually better than any review, because you can check it out yourself. See you in Dereth!!
It would be fun if...

This game really does have it all. It has a lot of stuff to do and the enviroments are truely a marvel. The thing that takes away from it though, is that no one plays it. This game would be better than WoW if more people played it. It's peak population was like 600!!! Also, it has probably dropped now that WoW is out. Anyway, I would have to recommend WoW instead of this game. It's the same formula only 300,000 people play it. Your choice though, play with 600 people or 300,000 people.
Wow! I expected much more!

Microsoft. I expected way more from this game. After 2 days of online play, I am ready to quit. I met 3 people online! WOW. I got disconnected several times and could not get back on. I thought Microsoft was the big boy on the block! The game stinks.

I'll keep this short. I beta test for AC2, I took part in AC1. The Asheron's Call franchise is absolutely spellbinding. You cannot ask for a better game, if you should even call it a game. You meet real people and establish real, lasting friendships. People have even been married after meeting in AC and love eachother, I know two of them personally. Now, don't think anything negative of AC2 until you try it. Then and only then should you wonder about the quality of this game. I vote it as not just one of the best, but THE best game I've ever known of.
Fantastic But Unexpected For The AC1 Player

First,
The Beta version of this game is jaw droppingly beautiful. There are some ballance and rouch patches that need to be worked out but the servers are stable and the game runs now with no real lag even with stress testing beta events. There are many elements from other MMRPGs in AC2 and if you enjoyed Dark Age of Camelot I think you will enjoy this even more.
The problem I see is the AC1 player community. This is the second generation of their game and they have pent up expectations that frankly are unreasonalbe and unrealistic.
Several AC1 beta testers have mounted a campaign to smear this game out of some sort of vindictive revenge for not having their personal pet peeve from AC1 addressed.
I have read several reviews such as the one rating this game as 1 star because "they did nothing to address kill stealing". Ask yourself if this seems like a rational conclusion about the entire game system.
If you have the time (it is addictive) and the computer to play this game you will be amazed. Unless what you are expecting is a new painbrush on AC1. In that case buy the expansion pack.
Very Fun

I have lost many hours of sleep because of this game. Since I started playing May 1st, I haven't gone to bed before 3:00 AM.
The Graphics is this game are amazing, high end system HIGHLY recomended. You'll also need a lot of RAM. If you're looking for a MMO to play, this is the best one out right now.
Not Truly A Sequel - But LOTS of Fun!

AC2 doesn't have a huge amount in common with AC1, and this is a huge positive in its favour for most players. Its system thoroughly reexamines every aspect of MMRPGs, and works hard to remove tedium at every level. Crafting is viable, hunting solo or in groups is fun/possible at every level, and the range of combination classes possible through the skill-tree system is amazing. Definitely a good game on which to get hooked for months/years to come.

The beta that most people are commenting is not indicative of the way the game will function come retail.
Yes, some of the GUI elements and other things will stay the same, but AC1's legacy to AC2 is its very inventive monthly patch content team, which as of now has not shown itself in beta at all.
If you are reading these, wait till new reviews come in after the end of beta event Oct 31 - Nov 3 and see if people change their tune.
AC has the best reputation for monthly updates, but the worst reputation for CoC enforcement, which will change entire for AC2 due to increased financial resources for +admin staff.
I look forward to this game, knowing what Turbine is capable of delivering on an ongoing basis.. something you will NOT see in any other game in the genre on the market.
Great fun...

Basically if you're not one of those gamer types that has to play a game 12 hours a day, you'll enjoy this game. It has lots of elements that make playing the game for even 15 minutes seem rewarding and fun. For example, virtually no downtime or tedium. Constant action to keep you interested. I've tried others in the genre like EQ, DAoC, and AC2 is better than the others due to graphics, no tedium, constant action, and fun gameplay...
Best investment in MMORPGs today..

The basic game is great. The graphics are wonderful. The development team is my favorite- they patch every month adding new content for FREE. Not 123491287 expansion packs. There may perhaps be 1, for housing. But you get a lot each month. In december they added a TON of low-end quests. Its a good game now, but in a few months it will be great.
