Simpler is not always better

I played the beta and I'd have to say that the graphics was very, very impressive but it starts going down hill after that.

The Lugian race now look more like they're trolls than lugians and when then walk it looks like they're trying out for the ballet. The humans walk like they're about to trip over their own feet any second while the tumeroks look more like skinny monkeys than the old tumeroks. I'm sure this could change in the future but that was my impression of the chars so far.

You can change your chars in regards to their size (width/height), their face as well as what colorings their clothing at the beginning will be. However, once you start crafting your own armor/weapons everyone start looking the same. At least they looked the same at lower levels.

Crafting is needed to get any kind of decent armor/weapons to use. You'll either have to work on it yourself or search for another person as there is no NPCs to work with. Interesting idea for making crafting in demand but the flaw in that is that you're dependent upon making it yourself or finding another to make it for you. All though I didn't play as long as some I never found any magical items and from what I've heard not very many people did :(.

Money at first is useless but soon you'll need it to do any type of crafting. Have to play the wait and see game to find out how the economy turns out.

Entering dungeons were seemless and I was very impressed with how I could just walk into one without any perception of downloading anything. Wish I could say I enjoyed the dungeons but the 2 or so I checked out were too heavily camped to fight anything.

Combat has been toned down in some respects while added in others. Meleer's will have "styles" of fighting to choose from but, from what I saw, magic users will have fewer options (including number of spells) to choose from. Since each "race", and I use that term loosely, has no differences from each other (except for appearance) the only difference is playing a char based upon looks. Oh sure, each race will get some abilites that another won't but since there are no stats no race is better at one type of fighting than another. This make no sense to me at all :(.

I would wait to buy this game till that add more content, hopefully change the char animation and add more uniqueness/individuality to people's char(s).

expected so much more

Microsoft had one heck of a job to do when creating a sequel to AC1, my all time favorite mmorpg ever.
I anxiously anticipated the release of this game and thought I was going to die of anxiety while waiting to get into Beta. Then I log into the new and improved lands of Dereth and needed to take some aspirin to relieve my headache of the graphics. The landscapes are very pretty and so are the character avatars if you adjust your camera view (zoom way in) and adjust all your settings (high)to pose for a screen shot , but you can't play that way for optimal game performance. What a disappointment, it looks like the Saturday morning comics with shadows and texture.

They did fix some of the negative issues in AC1 with this sequel and made a lot of improvements, but unfortunately at the sacrifice of some of the best features AC1 had.

I remember fondly the good times standing in Eastham or Ayan camping the shops for the treasures the higher levels had sold. The constant crowds of people and social atmosphere in the towns due to the frequent trips you had to make to town "for milk runs" that are no longer required. Those times are gone in AC2.

I also got an immediate reminder of how AC was the worst game ever for "kill stealing", this has not changed and still as aggravating as ever.

So after much anticipation, I will sadly be leaving this game on the store shelf.

A Lot of fun - but DON'T BUY A USED COPY!

This game is a real hoot. I never played Asheron's Call 1, so I guess I'm not expecting this to be a big sequel. I think it's excellent on it's own merits. It's fun, it's addictive.

WARNING - DON'T BUY A USED COPY! The CD KEY can NOT be transferred, and WILL NOT WORK. Once the CD Key is registered, it cannot be transferred, and you will have wasted your money. You will NOT be able to play the game if you buy a used copy.

AC2 Will be a great game

Hi Everyone,

AC1 Beta, AC1, AC2 Beta, and future AC2 retail player here and in my opinion this game is going to be great!!! People have a tendency to forget that AC1 was in a similar state when it released and Turbine delivered on every promise they made to make the game great.

The AC series is not like the other MMORPG's out there because they can update there game when ever they wish without an expansion pack!!! For example, every major issue people have with the UI is going to be address in the first monthly patch which will be Dec. 6th 2002. In addtion to fixing bugs and player issues they give you tons of new content each month.

For people looking to play AC1 with better graphics this is not the game for you though. AC2 is a completely different in the area of game play but in my opinion the game play is much better.

Graphics and Sound in this game are exceptional but are not my main reasons to play. My main reasons for loving this game are Combat Style, Crafting, Better Allegiance system, Content, Social environment, etc.

AC2 - A recipe for excellence

As an AC2 beta Player I think this game is a treat to play. Things are a little rocky right now, as they always are in the beta stage, but even in the short time I've played, the game has gotten much much better.
The graphics are beyond par - definitely the best of any MMORPG, if not the best of just about any PC game to date. (Doom 3's not out yet! But let's see an outside scene in Doom 3...)
Asheron's Call 2 is definitely not fully fleshed out yet. It's got a lifespan of 3 to 4 years for a gamer who buys it, and Turbine is in the Monthly Updates business, which means the game will stay compelling, with new content added every month.

Character Creation is simple in the beginning, as I think it should be. Truly customized characters are aquired through playing them, and building up your specilizations, instead of choosing everything at the start. This is great, since it means I don't have to study the game for a year before I can make a character that's not totally gimped.

The quests and monsters need a little tuning still, but I'm sure that's being worked on every day (and night, if I know Turbine's rep...) I don't think many people can (or are willing?) to remember how Asheron's Call 1 started out, it was much more rocky and sparse. It's truly full and compelling now, and Asheron's Call 2 is only building on that, while at the same time being a fresh and new game that will be pretty for years to come.

Definitely try it out!

Amazing Game!!!

The graphics are the best I've seen out of all the MMP's and better than most single player games. Craft skills are robust and the skill tree allows you to advance at your own pace. Combat and the magic effects are much better than DAOC or EQ. I wasn't a big fan of AC1, but this game is MUCH more fun. The UI is minimal and simple to use. If the free monthly concent is as cool as it was in Ac1, this game will totally rock. I'm dropping my DAOC account. You gotta give this game a try!

2nd Month in, Kinda Disappointed

The graphics are beautiful, but you will need 128Meg GForce 3 or 4, 1 Gig of RAM, and a ~2 GHz processor to see most of it. I had to turn all the graphics options to low on my system to have a reasonable speed to play. ( I am playing on a 1.5Ghz, 512M RAM, 64Meg GForce 2 system.)

They patched the chat, so now different types of messages show in different colors. Chat is still primitive compared to EQ and DAOC, it doesn't encourage socialization.

Overall pace of play is fast. Combat is quick paced, and by using a repeatable quest to buff yourself (like a SoW, shield buff) you can run fast and maintain your ability to fight higher level mobs with a minimium of crafting. You can level up to 13 very quickly - after that leveling begins to slow.

Not having merchants to sell player-crafted items means you are forced into crafting, it's just too hard to find someone to buy from. That also makes crafting as an occupation next to impossible. There is no economy to speak of.

Character skill development is more flexible than I originally thought it would be, there are some interesting possibilities by mixing and matching from the various skill trees.

My biggest gripe right now is the inventory system. There is no way to sort items into seperate containers, this makes crafting all the more tedious. I don't even pick up most of the loot that mobs drop now, so I don't have to deal with converting it to gold.

Overall, I give it 3 stars. Minus 2 stars for the really bad inventory system, no economy and to little content.

Very Very disappointing

I have been playing the BETA of AC2 for some time now, and I must say that I am very very disappointed with it, I barely feel any need to log in anymore with a free account never mind pay for it. Let me say however that the graphics are amazing but the games is really boring. Its so basic, no housing no banking system, no NPCs, the monsters AI is really basic, it plays like a dumbed down version of other MMRPGs out there.

Another major disappointment was that its essentially a completely different game to AC1, all the play balancing and fine tuning has been totally lost in AC2, worst of all the chat interface is terrible, mono color, its almost impossible to chat during fights.

Im hoping that in 6 months after release they add the housing and banking system, plus some plot I will take a look again, right now it's a total wast of money, I cant see very many sticking with this dull dry game.

Well DUH

For all of you guys out there who changed from AC1 to AC2 expecting it to be the same great game, don't. AC2 was made in the same world as the previous but it's an entirely different game. You can't switch expecting it to be the same as the previous because it's not. This was Microsoft's attempt at another style of MMORPG. I encourage all of you who have tried it and didn't llike it to give it another try. But this time try not to think of it as a sequel so much as a new game. That will make it so much more enjoyable.

It's fun and a great time-waster.

I played it (the free trial) for 15 days and I can only say that the nay-sayers are WAY too into their mmorpg's.

The game is fun, relaxed, and played at great speed with great graphics on my PC (which is not anywhere near top-of-the-line because I already HAVE an XBOX).

I'm not pandering to microsoft here, but as long as you have some social skills, this game is enough that so long as you make friends, it could be the most fun you've had in ages.
