I should start out with saying that this game is not a traditional game from Squaresoft, it is like a jazzed up version of Streets of Rage or something. It has many good things about it, and many bad things.
First off, graphics are amazing, and dialog sounds different instead of having that robotic sound to it. By all means this is a great game, it's got story, it's pretty fun, and it has the hugest replay value of any game ever.
However, the game is extremely short, about an hour or two, depending if you skip movies or not. And after beating the game a few times, the only fun thing to do is battle it out with a few of your freinds. I would like to have seen more RPG elements in this game, instead of movies then fighting.
If you want to showoff your playstation 2, or you have some freinds to fight with, then this game is for you. However, if you are more of an RPG-er and not much for just battle games, then just rent the game first.
For low attention spans, it's great

For many of us, there isn't a whole lot of time in our lives to spend playing a console game. Games like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, or Legend of Zelda are fantastic, no doubt giving us many many hours of wonderful entertainment...but for those who grow bored easily, sometime after 40 hours on the first disk tends to make us a little hesitant to finish the whole game. I for one have a low attention span, and while I absolutely love the above mentioned games I've yet to finish any of them because of their length.
So, games like The Bouncer or Onimusha, which are shorter but just as intense, really appeal to me. For this one, the whole story was really cool, a lot like watching a movie with spurts where you can battle the bad guys (whose moves have a short learning curve, so you're not clueless as to how to fight if you've not played something like this before). There are three main characters, all of whom are bouncers at a particular bar. Most of the reviews go into who they are, but one of the really neat options is that you can really get to know each character's background and mindset individually depending on whether you choose to play them in whatever fight you do; they have small blurbs at the end, or in the FMV sequence afterwards where your chosen, in that turn, battle character lets you into a secret. For example, in the very first battle if you choose the tattooed bouncer you get to hear both sides of a phone conversation, plus see and extra part of the FMV later on, but if you choose another you think he's just having a "nice" phone chat.
anyway, I only rented it but I think that I'll be going out and buying this one. It's an easy way to blow off steam, plus has some cool sequences and one-liners, depending on who you choose to fight. :) I recommend it for stress relief, but I really like the fact that it's shorter than the average it-takes-two-weeks-to-beat game. It means that I may actually get to the end for once! :-)

This is definitly the most stunning video game I have ever played. The graphics are like no other. It is exactly what makes Nintendo and Microsoft shiver. Each company has it's high point. Capcom is high on one factor while Squaresoft is high on another. Of course, Squaresoft's always been high on graphics and nothing else. Length and "Lasting Appeal" are still Square's worst and that isn't a factor that a company should have against them. However, they did have some bad problems with the game in development so it's good that we even got what we have now. However, it's still not enough. The game is mostly movies and save options. The loading in some areas gets very redundent and annoying. If you made the game into three CDs, it still would be too small. In fact, I didn't realize I was at the final boss until the second time he got up. There are hardly any reasons to replay the game besides it's hidden extras like characters in the 2-4 player mode and the hidden FMV scene for Sion. Is it worth ...? The answer is no. Wait for Final Fantasy X because that's what most people are doing. I still have thoughts about The Bouncer since it was quite an experience. It doesn't deserve a purchase but it is worth a few $5 rentals. If you are still one of the Squaresoft fans that simply must have it, go ahead. It's still very entertaining and fun. The powerups take plenty of time to get and there are three characters to play as. Also, at one point they split up going to different places in Mirkado. So it's your chance to see a few new screens if you've been stuck on Sion.
Looks great, but gameplay is poor!

OK, I agree. It LOOKS wonderful! But eye-candy isn't everything when it comes to great games. This is NOT a great game. This is an OK rental game, since it is easy to play. Re-play value stinks except to show your friends.

First I would like to say this is a great game. I personally do not think it's a short game. Maxing your stats, watching all the different endings, and unlocking all the hidden characters is a lot to do. The thing I really liked about this game was the graphics and sound. Wonderfully done special attacks, the enviroments was outstanding. The 5.1 surround sound implemented in the game was great, I was amazed especially in the first FMV. The thing I wish they had done was made the enviroments more interactive.
Square's worst game

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. I repeat, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. The Bouncer is nothing but a rental, so don't waste your money on it. Yes, The Bouncer is a beautiful game. These are simply the best graphics on any system. The animation is amazing as well. BUT...graphics don't mean anything in the long run -- it's all about gameplay. The Bouncer has the most boring, repetitive "gameplay" found in any fighting game. The story is a joke too, and we don't really care for these characters at all. If you like gorgeous cinemas, then The Bouncer is for you. It is one big long cut-scene with about fifteen minutes of actual gameplay thrown in. The Bouncer is a laughable, beautiful, pathetic mess. Square should be ashamed of themselves -- The Bouncer is easily the worst game they have ever made.
Loved Ehrgeiz, hated this

Don't get me wrong -- I love Square's "Final Fantasy" RPG's and was one of the few loyal defenders of the Square / Dream Factory fighter "Ehrgeiz". So I'm strongly inclined to like this RPG'ish slug-fest.
But oh my gosh, is this awful.
The gameplay here is a variation on old-school beat-em-ups (use simple fighting moves to dispatch hordes of drones, move forward through a level, fight a boss, yada yada yada). The controls are similar to Ehrgeiz and the Tobal games: full 3-D movement, high/middle/low attack buttons, a simple block button. But there are few combos, the fighting and movement feels slow, and there's some genuine cheapness to the bosses... blech!
The graphics, both in-game and cinematics, are wonderful -- in fact, the visuals created by the game engine are often as good as the pre-rendered stuff. And the story, for what it is (sci-fi action fodder), is perfectly agreeable. But you can't help but think that the presentation is where all the development time went -- busy as they were with all the visuals, somone forgot to make sure the thing was fun to play.
The core of the game is a story-mode, billed on the package as "Play the action movie!". More like watch some stuff, play a little, watch more, play a little. What's really painful is when you die in a particularly hard battle, you have to go back to the title screen, reload your game from the memory card, and watch or skip however many movie-scenes transpired between that save-point and the fight you want to restart (you'll also suffer the loading-screen between these skipped movie scenes). You can literally play for 30 seconds, die, and spend 5 minutes getting back to where you were.
Beyond the story-mode, there's a 4-person slug-fest and a survival mode, neither as engaging as similar modes in real fighting games like "DOA2".
Despite the awesome presentation, this isn't even as good as "Dynasty Warriors 2", Koei's far less ambitious PS2 beat-em-up. At least that game could keep the action going for longer than two minutes without becoming boring or stopping for a loading screen.
I'd love it if Square's "Final Fantasy X" had the production values of "The Bouncer"... but I hope it has the gameplay of "Chrono Cross" instead of this ambitous train-wreck.

Dont get me wrong.. I liked the game. It was decent. but.. worth buying? I don't think so. Rent it. save yourself some bucks. The game lasts about an hour... and nothing really happens. The CG graphics lack realistics as well.
