this game is da bomb the flying is so real with awsome graphics if you want a flying game this is the one to get.

Well you know there are two magor flyin' fight sim "Top Gun" and of corse "ace Combat 4" well you know 1st i didnt play them and just read stuff about them i thought Top Gun® was better then i tried Ace Combat 4® and it was pretty good but still i read more stuff and top gun looked better thne i finaly tried top gun and guess wut it sucks. Buy Ace combat 4 and leave top gun on the shelfs on da store

This game really surpassed my expectations. First of all, the graphics are incredible. While not quite on par with Rogue Squadron II, the planes are modeled realistically and the ground, from high up, looks fantastic. However, when you get closer to the land, it turns itself into an ugly pixelated mess. The gameplay, while unrealistic, is pretty amazing too. You'll never again be able to down 20 planes in one mission without even exhausting half of your missile supply! The voice acting is decent and the story is not really a necessary part of the game, but it does help to motivate you to fight. So, the question on everbody's mind is: Is this the best console flight sim ever made? In my opinion, it definitely is

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS GAME IS GREAT. THYE GRAPHICS ARE EXCELLENT AND THE AIRCRAFT MANUEVER LIKE REAL FIGHTER JETS. THIS GAME BLOWS TOP GUN AND ANY OTHER FLIGHT SIM OUT OF THE SKY! tHE GAME PLAY IS GREAT. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE GAME COULD BE LONGER. IT'S BEATABLE ON HARD DIFFICULTY LEVEL INUNDER TWO HOURS

Strap Yourself Into the Cockpit

Awesome graphics highlight this top-notch aerial combat simulator, putting you right in the cockpit of today's elite jet weaponry. Play control is fluid and easy to acclimate yourself with. There are around 18 slick looking, state-of-the-art fighter jets to select from (unfortunately, you have to earn enough points, accomplishing different missions, to be able to purchase them). The thing that struck me the most was the breathtaking beauty of the jets from certain camera angles. You really get the sense of piloting an actual jet fighter as you cruise around, surveying the landscape and horizon for your quarry.

As aesthetically pleasing as the game is, it is not without its flaws.

The game would have been better without the sappy plot, which does not belong in a no-nonsense action game of this type. The mission goals are often nebulous, and the game can be quite frustrating, some stages seemingly impossible to complete, even on the easiest skill level. The dialogue of your squadron mates and enemies is repetitive and annoying. Do not expect tons of action either; most of the time, you are flying around looking for enemies, which is time consuming and boring. And if you happen to score a hit on one of the fast flying jets, it is almost by accident. Although, that does imbue the game with a high level of realism.

"Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies", while replete with enough eye candy to give you a cavity in your pupil, will probably not satisfy shoot 'em up action game fans. But if you have ever fantasised about piloting elite fighter jets, such as the F-22 Raptor, through perilous, realistic missions, this is the game to get.

Worth a rental

Ace Combat 04 has a lot of eye candy and looks great. Unfortunately, the flight model is way too simple for this game to be anything but an updated Galaga.

Literally, there is a button to go fast, slow, up, down, left and right. Stalls, spins, damage, etc aren't part of this game. Namco has put in carrier and airstrip landings, but they are ridiculously simple and offer no challenge at all.

The first time I played, for example, I finished about 4 missions in an hour. I made a perfect carrier landing on one mission despite my plane being at 94% damage. Not bad for a rookie in a beat up prayer of an airplane, or, just a very very simple arcade interface.

Some missions are tedious - score 2000 points in 11:00 minutes for example. It's fun blowing up the first 20 land targets, then boredom sets in. Besides the time limitations on some missions, the most challenging part to the game is not hitting the ground.

dude, this game ROCKKKKS!...AWESOME GAMEPLAY!, STUNNING GRAPHICS! CONVINCING STORYLINE!, AN ARMY OF FIGHTER JETS TO PURCHASE! and if THAT'S just not enough to stir your kettle....just think about all the GLORY and PRAISE that gets thrown your way after the last mission of the game!...you literally feel like a REAL fighter pilot that just one WWIII!!...talk about an "ego" booster!..and the weapons, that's just another story, from common air combat weaponry like machine guns to missiles that even MIKE TYSON would be afraid of!...this game is the way to go if you're into AIR COMBAT SIMULATION, i was never even into the whole "ace combat" series, but when i played THIS one for the first time...TALK ABOUT ADDICTING! and even if THAT'S not enough to convince you....just the SOUNDTRACK alone KICKS BUTT! and the 4th brother of the ACE COMBAT family would be considered the ICING on your cake....just uhmmm, make sure that when u hop into an SU-37 fighter jet and fly over the cake at MACH 2 (approx 1000mph...your CAKE doesn't fly away. so bottom line, DEFINITELY a keeper for the library, no doubts about it!

Taking Flight Sim to the Next Level

I've only played a few flight simulation games, but so far, all of them have been bull compared to this. It's as close as you can get to being in a real fighter without a pilot's license. The landscape is almost like a photograph, and the rain, smoke, fire, clouds, weapons-pretty much everything- are extremely realistic. The only problem with the graphics is that the explosions are smaller than what's blowing up, and always look the same, no matter what size or shape whatever you destroyed was. But that's not a lot to give up for the experience of the 18 huge missions with realistic briefings. The special weapons are a cool addition, too. After a while, you'll start to think you were really an ace pilot for the Allied Forces in the middle of a war with the Erusians and their superweapons. They could use the tutorial in this game as training for newly recruited air force pilots.

In a sentence, this game will keep you on your couch with a Dualshock 2 controller(which gives you a cool vibration every time you crash or are hit) glued to your hand. Definitely 5 stars.
